While standards for #ADACompliance on wheelchair trails are not uniform, many trail management groups do make wheelchair accessibility a priority. Our criteria for trail accessibility consider the trail's grade, surface, and width as well as its access points.

Routes noted as wheelchair trails on this website generally have an asphalt or concrete surface, although some crushed limestone trails are also suitable for wheelchairs. We try to note convenient access points and accessible parking facilities. However, not all trails marked as wheelchair friendly are accessible throughout the entire trail's length. When in doubt, check the links provided with a particular trail (under "Related Content" on the trail description page) to see if it truly is a wheelchair accessible trail.

The trail description on TrailLink should indicate where sections are not wheelchair accessible, but again, some don't simply because we may not have that information. We do rely on local trail users, so let us know the details if you encounter useful information—or misinformation!

All trails listed on TrailLink are multiuse, so keep in mind the common right-of-way rules of thumb, unless otherwise posted on the trail: wheelchair users yield to horses.

"An inclusive community garden works when people can arrive, move through the site, reach the soil, use water, rest, understand the rules, join workdays, and harvest with dignity. A garden can have wide paths and still exclude people if the gate is hard to open, the hose is heavy, all beds are low to the ground, signs use tiny print, or meetings happen at times that conflict with caregiving and shift work.

"Designing for all abilities means treating #accessibility as a whole garden system. Paths, beds, tool sheds, water points, seating, shade, compost areas, harvest tables, volunteer schedules, and decision processes all shape who can participate. Welcoming gardens reduce unnecessary effort so more people can stay involved in the activity.

"A shared growing space should give #wheelchair users, older adults, children, people with #LowVision, #NeurodivergentGardeners, people with #ChronicPain or #fatigue, new gardeners, caregivers, and neighbors with different languages or schedules a usable way to belong.

Nice move by #NHS #WesternIsles estates today, #snow cleared off one of the car parks and dumping a large pile of it on the back half of one of the #wheelchair #access parking bays. Managed to park diagonally and hanging half-out of the bay anyway... 🙄

Playing #TuxRacer with my HMC Mini #Joystick from my electric #wheelchair. Thanks to my #DIY adapter box, which makes it possible to connect the joystick as a game controller to the PC via USB. The adapter makes use of an Arduino Leonardo to process the signals from the joystick. I programed the microcontroller myself and got some help from the people from the #KOLab #Makerspace for the wiring and development of the circuit.. A big thank for that!
