  1. So much for '#SystemD is not a monolith' guilt tripping. It's modular in theory alone. #Flatpak is the next critical software to introduce a hard dependency on systemd, after #Gnome. Those of us using #Runit, #OpenRC, #GNUShepherd etc are looking at a situation similar to #elogind.

    What's common among them? A corporate #OpenSource ecosystem that only they can maintain. Meanwhile, those who question this are treated with contempt!

  15. Okay, I heard that runit init system is pretty fast. But was not ready for it...

    Void Linux + Sway + TUIGreet. From decrypting LUKS to login screen (according to dmesg) - 0.8 seconds.
    From pushing the button to login screen (excluding GRUB menu and typing in LUKS password) - just about 7 seconds.

    Wild. Just wild.

  16. So, I rescued a 12-year-old Macbook Pro, given up by its owner because Apple had orphaned it from security updates, and also it was suffering from Apple High-Qwality Spicy Pillow Syndrome.

    I replaced the battery and installed Linux on it.

    And I gotta say, this was the most satisfying thing I've done with a keyboard in years:

    # apt-get purge systemd libnss-systemd

    #Devuan Excalibur installed/upgraded from Debian Trixie like a champ. Now I don't have to deal with extraneous horseshit when Lennart adds systemd-mountd, systemd-sshd, systemd-bourne-shell, systemd-emacs, etc, etc...

    Thanks to @landley for the post that finally convinced me to give Devuan a go. I'd been thinking about it for years, but didn't feel like setting aside a bunch of debugging time which I assumed would be needed.

    Now to figure out how to switch to s6 from runit. ( @ska )

  21. Don’t be like me and spend an embarrassing amount of time trying to figure out how to run a #runit service as a user. I guess #kanatakbd uses `cmd` to run another program (`wtype`), but permissions still interfere… 🤷 at this point I gave up.

    What you *should* do is to create a user-level service: docs.voidlinux.org/config/serv Then it’s simple: make a dir, put a `run` in it (`log/run` optional), and you’re done. Is it a service or a #nushell script? Both! Runit is great!

  22. Age verification compliance is another aberration of systemd. Luckily, there are alternative init systems and GNU/Linux distributions that care about your privacy.

  23. RE: fosstodon.org/@atoponce/116255

    Good thing I've tried pretty much every other init out there last year so I can just move to any distro regardless of init.

    They're honestly not that hard. I'm liking Void Linux's runit rn and dinit feels like systemd. Sysv's kinda ok but I'll get the hang of it.

    I'm not gonna migrate out of systemd distros like Fedora, Debian, Arch and sum of their derivatives though, but if I ever see a window that asks for my birth day, I'm O-U-T, out!

  24. Now I see why some people shit on systemd. For simple things, it's needlessly complex haha. I mean I already did something like this last year where I tried out other inits and I'd say sysvinit is one of the most complicated inits I've ever used when I played around with it.

    It's WAY older than me. I'm only 23 years old and that thing is like 30+ years old

  25. Moved back to regular linux kernel on my arch rig and I've moved some of my operations from cachyos vm to voidlinux vm.

    I also discovered how simple it was to make a service file on Void Linux. I was about to write a service file for zramen cos it was honestly just a matter of making a shell script but yeah I didn't know there's already a service file for that one, lol.

  32. Copying the plugin folders manually worked. Not many of them will be useful, but I tested SteamGridDB and ProtonDB Badges.

    I also tried installing a previous version of #DeckyLoader to see if it would update, but it broke. So I’ll leave it for now. I’m thinking of writing a script for automatic installation, #runit and all, which shouldn’t be hard. However, doing everything by hand is also not that difficult. As usual, feel free to ask.

    #NotFullyLiveVoidPosting

  33. I take it back about #syncthing github.com/syncthing/syncthing Mostly: it should be simply `export SYNCTHING="/usr/bin/syncthing`.

    Decided to use my old #SteamController, which made it easy. The #VoidLinux `steam-udev-rules` package is useful for this. Or does it work without it? Shrug.

    I made #DeckyLoader work with #runit, but it’s store is currently unavailable (just for me?) so I can’t test it. I also don’t know how it is updated.

    So, now Haiku. Still JK.

  34. #ArtixLinux is based on #ArchLinux with the alternative init systems #dinit, #runit, #OpenRC, and #s6. It provides you the @devuan -pioneered Init Freedom on Arch btw. and therefore complements Arch's systemd approach.

    I switched to a distribution that is installed “bare” and empty (Void Linux), so nothing needs to be deleted. You need to:

    1. Replace the bootloader with #rEFInd;

    2. Remove unnecessary firmware;

    3. Install the necessary fonts, as this system has a problem displaying them;

    4. Install the nVidia driver;

    5. Install #ChronyD;

    6. Install #OctoXBPS — a package manager similar to Synaptic;
