Okay, I heard that runit init system is pretty fast. But was not ready for it...
Void Linux + Sway + TUIGreet. From decrypting LUKS to login screen (according to dmesg) - 0.8 seconds.
From pushing the button to login screen (excluding GRUB menu and typing in LUKS password) - just about 7 seconds.Wild. Just wild.

So, I rescued a 12-year-old Macbook Pro, given up by its owner because Apple had orphaned it from security updates, and also it was suffering from Apple High-Qwality Spicy Pillow Syndrome.
I replaced the battery and installed Linux on it.
And I gotta say, this was the most satisfying thing I've done with a keyboard in years:
# apt-get purge systemd libnss-systemd
#Devuan Excalibur installed/upgraded from Debian Trixie like a champ. Now I don't have to deal with extraneous horseshit when Lennart adds systemd-mountd, systemd-sshd, systemd-bourne-shell, systemd-emacs, etc, etc...
Thanks to @landley for the post that finally convinced me to give Devuan a go. I'd been thinking about it for years, but didn't feel like setting aside a bunch of debugging time which I assumed would be needed.
Now to figure out how to switch to s6 from runit. ( @ska )

antiX 26 Linux distribution skips systemd and packs five init systems into a tiny Debian base

Now I see why some people shit on systemd. For simple things, it's needlessly complex haha. I mean I already did something like this last year where I tried out other inits and I'd say sysvinit is one of the most complicated inits I've ever used when I played around with it.
It's WAY older than me. I'm only 23 years old and that thing is like 30+ years old

While watching Brodie Robertson's reaction to LTT trying Linux again, I installed Void Linux. I picked the musl base live image and after install I had to manually install xfce and sum stuffs.
I'll be doing the stuff I've been doing in the cachyos vm here.

I switched to a distribution that is installed “bare” and empty (Void Linux), so nothing needs to be deleted. You need to:Replace the bootloader with #rEFInd;
Remove unnecessary firmware;
Install the necessary fonts, as this system has a problem displaying them;
Install the nVidia driver;
Install #ChronyD;
Install #OctoXBPS — a package manager similar to Synaptic;
Install #VSV (Void Service Manager) to manage #runit services;
Install #zram;
Connect additional repositories;
Install application software

Even simply separately packaging binaries and hooks *today* would avoid the problem whereby the systemd-all-in-one package always installs all possible runtime hooks, some of which try to spin up systemd-logind, and systemd itself, by various surprising back-routes.
http://jdebp.info/Softwares/nosh/guide/services/systemd-logind.html
Gerrit Pape had packaged runit-run and runit-init separately from runit, and this was the model to follow.

Installing #VoidLinux is one thing, but documenting it is key. I'm working on #dracut hooks to automatically create and sign the #unifiedkernelimage. I've already done #FullDiskEncryption (including
/boot)The best thing is that i can lookup most of the stuff on the #ArchLinux #wiki (except #systemd stuff). I like #runit, though i'm not used to it yet.
I can also fix or reinstall the OS how much i want because of my separate
/homepartition. This level of customization and control is so cool.I'm already excited to #automate the base system installation using #Ansible.

#s6 is a service management system from @ska that is in the Bernstein #daemontools family.
#runit is a similar but less rounded out system from Gerrit Pape in the same family that is unfortunately not well maintained.
-
van Smoorenburg #rc was never the thing to compare to. They realized this in the big Debian Hoo-Hah over systemd in ~2014, and almost everyone ruled it out as a reasonable option.
Mewburn rc pre-dated systemd by about a decade and a comparison to it would have ruined the whole "but-but-but look at the long shell scripts!" argument.
So too did comparison to the #daemontools family:
http://jdebp.info/FGA/run-scripts-and-service-units-side-by-side.html
-
Mewburn rc still uses PID files, a mechanism that people knew to be broken back in the middle 1980s. daemontools-family systems like runit do not.
There's no universal agreement on what a "service" is as opposed to a dæmon. But the concrete differences between the systems start with PID files, and continue with chain loading, logging, and composition.
