Jeffrey Allen Manchester parecía destinado a una vida completamente normal.
Nació en Estados Unidos en 1971, sirvió en el ejército y durante años fue considerado un hombre trabajador, casado y con hijos.
Sin embargo, detrás de esa apariencia corriente se escondía una historia que acabaría convirtiéndolo en uno de los delincuentes más insólitos y mediáticos de la historia reciente estadounidense.

Todo comenzó tras el derrumbe de su vida familiar.
A finales de la década de 1990 atravesó un divorcio complicado que lo afectó profundamente tanto emocional como económicamente.
Manchester siempre afirmó que quería seguir manteniendo a sus hijos y que la presión económica lo llevó a buscar una salida desesperada.
Fuera por necesidad, por resentimiento o por una combinación de ambas cosas, tomó una decisión que cambiaría su vida para siempre: empezar a robar.

Pero Jeffrey no era un ladrón convencional.

Su objetivo favorito eran los restaurantes McDonald's.
En lugar de entrar por puertas o ventanas, subía al tejado durante la noche y abría un agujero por el que se colaba en el edificio.
Después esperaba pacientemente durante horas hasta que los primeros empleados llegaban por la mañana y abrían la caja fuerte.

Aquella extraña forma de actuar le valió el apodo de "Roofman", algo así como "el hombre de los tejados".

Entre finales de los años noventa y comienzos de los 2000 llegó a cometer más de 45 robos siguiendo prácticamente el mismo método.
Su fama creció porque, aunque utilizaba armas para intimidar, rara vez mostraba agresividad física.
Los testimonios de algunos trabajadores contaban que se disculpaba constantemente, hablaba con calma e incluso intentaba tranquilizar a las personas que estaba robando.

Uno de los detalles más extraños de su leyenda criminal era que encerraba a los empleados en cámaras frigoríficas para evitar que llamaran a la policía, pero les dejaba abrigos o mantas para que no pasaran frío.
Aquello contribuyó a crear una imagen casi novelesca del personaje, aunque la realidad era bastante menos romántica: seguía siendo un hombre armado que retenía a personas contra su voluntad.

Finalmente fue detenido y condenado en el año 2000.
Parecía el final de la historia.

No lo era.

En 2004 protagonizó una fuga espectacular de una prisión de Carolina del Norte.
Escaló una cerca de más de cuatro metros utilizando una cuerda improvisada hecha con cordones y otros materiales.
La policía inició una enorme búsqueda, pero Manchester desapareció sin dejar rastro.

Y entonces comenzó el capítulo más increíble de toda su vida.

Durante aproximadamente seis meses logró ocultarse dentro de una tienda Toys "R" Us.
Aprovechó zonas poco transitadas del establecimiento para construir un escondite secreto detrás de unas estanterías de bicicletas.
Allí instaló una especie de habitación improvisada donde dormía y almacenaba objetos.

Cuando la tienda cerraba por la noche, Jeffrey salía de su refugio.
Comía alimentos que encontraba en el establecimiento, utilizaba juguetes, leía revistas y llevaba una existencia casi fantasmal en medio de los pasillos vacíos.

Lo más sorprendente es que no permanecía encerrado todo el tiempo.
Salía ocasionalmente al exterior, acudía a una iglesia local y llegó incluso a iniciar una relación sentimental con una mujer llamada Leigh Wainscott.
Ella desconocía inicialmente que estaba conviviendo con uno de los fugitivos más buscados del país.

Aquella relación terminó siendo uno de los factores que condujeron a su descubrimiento.
Las investigaciones acabaron estrechando el cerco y Manchester fue capturado nuevamente en 2005.

Sin embargo, la historia tampoco terminó ahí.

Con el paso de los años volvió a protagonizar nuevos delitos y nuevas fugas.
En 2015 fue detenido otra vez tras una serie de robos similares a los que lo habían hecho famoso.
Las autoridades descubrieron que seguía utilizando métodos muy parecidos a los de décadas atrás.

A diferencia de la imagen casi simpática que algunos medios y documentales ayudaron a construir, los expedientes judiciales muestran una realidad más oscura.
Además de los robos, Manchester fue condenado por secuestro, incendios provocados y otros delitos graves relacionados con sus atracos.
Varias personas cercanas también denunciaron comportamientos manipuladores que contrastaban con la figura del ladrón educado que había fascinado al público.

Hoy continúa encarcelado y no podrá recuperar la libertad, al menos, hasta la década de 2030.

Su historia sigue llamando la atención porque parece una mezcla imposible entre película de aventuras, drama familiar y novela criminal.
Un exsoldado que robaba entrando por los tejados, que se escondió durante meses en una juguetería y que llevó una doble vida mientras era buscado por todo el país.

Pero detrás de la leyenda de Roofman no hay un héroe romántico ni un Robin Hood moderno.
Hay un hombre que tomó decisiones cada vez más extremas hasta convertir una crisis personal en una larga carrera criminal que destruyó su propia vida y afectó a muchas otras personas.

According to the GAO report, an estimated 13.8 million American adults enrolled in Medicaid, and 10.6 million who live in a household that receives Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits worked at least part time in 2024. Two-thirds of that group worked full-time jobs, clocking in 35 or more hours each week. Most of these employed recipients of federal benefits worked in some of the lowest-paying jobs in the country, but an estimated 35% of them were employed at companies with more than 1,000 workers.

As The Washington Post reported in its analysis of the GAO data, the top employers of these federal beneficiaries are some of the nation’s biggest and most well-known companies. “The number of Amazon workers relying on the federal programs for the poor nearly tripled between February 2020 and September 2025,” the Post noted, to around 12,346 workers who needed SNAP assistance and 11,338 who had to rely on Medicaid. “And for the first time, ride-hailing and app-based food delivery companies — Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, Grubhub and Instacart — collectively ranked among the top three employers with workers receiving aid.” Rounding out the group: Walmart, the nation’s largest private employer, as well as Dollar General and McDonald’s.

But as Stephen Jay Gould goes on to observe (in his 1996 book, Full House: The Spread of Excellence from Plato to Darwin), “They are today and have always been the modal organisms on earth; they cannot be nuked to oblivion and will outlive us all. This time is their time, not the ‘age of mammals’ as our textbooks chauvinistically proclaim. But their price for such success is permanent relegation to a microworld, and they cannot know the joy and pain of consciousness. We live in a universe of trade-offs; complexity and persistence do not work well as partners.”

Still, we (more complex) humans have recognized– and accommodated– bacteria for millennia. As We Make Money Not Art explains in a review of a recent book– We The Bacteria. Notes Toward Biotic Architecture by architectural historians Beatriz Colomina and Mark Wigley— that’s fascinatingly apparent in the history of architecture…

This “alternative history of architecture from the point of view of microbes” compiles the research that led to the exhibition We the Bacteria: Notes Toward Biotic Architecture at the 24th Milan Triennale last year. Curated by Colomina and Wigley, the show investigated how microbial ecosystems relate to spatial design and health inequality.

The book argues that microbes have not only built the whole planetary biosphere but they have also been the real architects of our homes and cities throughout the ages. Or rather, it’s the fear and diseases they cause that have shaped our spaces and the ways we move through them.

About ten thousand years ago, humans began retreating into spaces increasingly cut off from the exterior world. Plants, soil and insects could be left outside. But microbes, including pathogenic ones, followed humans inside their homes, where they adapted, mutated and generated new diseases. As our shelters expanded into villages, cities and sprawling empires, so too did the microbial ecosystems.

The authors narrate how buildings and bodies exist in a constant microbial exchange, co-evolving into a single, dynamic ecosystem. The microbiome of a home is highly specific to its inhabitants. Even the microbiome of a frequently cleaned hospital room resembles the microbiome of the previous patient, but starts to resemble that of a new occupant after twenty-four hours.

Architecture cannot exist without microbes, and, by extension, without disease. While scrubbing, spraying and disinfecting may eliminate most microorganisms, these practices also breed extremophiles, species so resistant that they can take over the space.

Throughout history, the book reveals, health crises have dictated architectural and urban design. From toilets to fumigation systems, from the plague hospitals, aka lazarettos, to the sanatoriums for tuberculosis patients; from sewage systems to urban parks, cities have been continually reshaped in response to the threats they sought to contain. Architecture became the first line of defence against microbes…

… Given the important role that microbes play for our immune systems and the environments we inhabit, the authors call for a biotic architecture. Biotic architecture is less human-centric than traditional architecture. It learns from microbes rather than resists them. It does, of course, maintain some antimicrobial protocols against pathogens remain crucial. Water, sewage systems, toilets and food preparation areas still need to be cleansed, but cleaning routines should also embrace controlled exposure to microbial diversity. During COVID-19, for example, microbiologist Elisabetta Caselli and her colleagues replaced conventional disinfectants with probiotic-based sanitation in six Italian public hospitals. The result was a decrease in surface pathogens by up to 90% compared to conventional chemical cleaning and lower rates of healthcare-associated infections and antibiotic resistances… For once, here is a book that presents a vision where humans can actively contribute to microbial diversity, collaborate with the unseen world around us and build in ways that nurture rather than harm the environment…

In der Politik gibt es Dreiecke im #Lobbyismus: #Regierungen können aus öffentlichen Haushalten #Steuergeschenke oder #Subventionen locker machen, die sie selbst nicht bezahlen. Es können gesetzliche Standards (z.B. für #Klima oder #Umweltschutz) gesenkt und damit #Gewinne für bestimmte Branchen erhöht werden. Oder man kann für bestimmte #Technologien hohe Hürden aufbauen, die sie unrentabel machen. Dafür kann zuweilen auf #Parteispenden oder spätere Jobs in der bevorzugten Branche gehofft werden, selbst wenn kein unmittelbares "gibst Du mir - gebe ich Dir" stattfindet. Manchmal kann man den Eindruck gewinnen, eine Branche würde quasi sogar jemanden in die Regierung entsenden mit einem klaren Auftrag. Die unmittelbaren und langfristigen Kosten trägt die Gesellschaft.

This morning, I used DeepL and Grammarly to proofread English sentences for my mother’s emails to her acquaintances. Then, I needed help with using LLM to improve my vocabulary. Because sometimes it includes inappropriate words in specific contexts.

But I can always communicate here about my mundane daily life despite my complete and utter lack of English speaking ability, which is truly a miracle created by technology, including LLM. As you soon discover, I can’t speak or hear English when you talk to me. Having over 1100 followers on Fedi is something of a miracle for me. And I always think that all English-speaking people. You are doing yourself a great disservice by not being able to grasp how mediocre most of the rest of the non-English speaking world thinks and how close they are to you. The bias brought about by the fact that it is a foreign language is very significant.

By the way, Inkscape has a feature for downloading public domain SVG material collections. Has that been implemented since version 1.3.x? I looked for version 1.2.2 and couldn’t find it. Soon, I found it in File => Import Web Image.

Then, I thought of learning from the quality of Inkscape’s sample materials. Because truly skilled creators can create something with design and character using only basic shapes and public domain materials and make “copyright” out of nothing. One of my junior girls has a clear view of what constitutes creativity under copyright law. She has the aptitude to be an in-house designer. She understands some of what it means to be a designer.

Even if you subscribe to expensive Adobe products such as PhotoShop or Illustrator, if you cannot highly abstract what you see (i.e., compose richer, more memorable representations with less data size) using a combination of basic shapes and free transformations, then you cannot be an in-house designer because you cannot produce something with copyright, what I have learned through Western music composition.

Classical Western music composition is like a 4KB Megademo, a competition aiming to produce more storable information with a limited formula data size. The originality of creativity in metaphysics is the ability to abstract what the creator sees or hears with a lesser combination of formulas. The difference between art and design is irrelevant in this regard. Although there is a compositional style in contemporary music, the spectral school, which imitates the frequency spectrum in its scores, has a large data size for its formulas because its degree of abstraction is not based on the free deformation of basic figures, and for that, they are not aware of the amount of information that the human body can recognize and memorize, so they made a big mistake. In defining creativity in metaphysics, the question is how highly abstract it can be. Deep Learning can only replicate existing data in a form similar to them, not decompose it into a form suitable for cognitive science. Therefore, LLMs are not currently able to create. They only violate copyright. If you deny the importance of abstraction, there can be no art after LLM.

I have relative and absolute pitch sensitivity to distinguish a 0.2 Hz pitch difference in pitch in the 440 Hz hearing band. Yet, I never understood the philosophy of the spectral school of music because I want to be friendly to all humanity. For example, the common illustration language for all humanity today is SVG, not the paper canvases displayed in museums.

In an instant, I have dismissed the value of fine art, but I don’t care. I was such an extreme globalist and standardizer that the University of the Arts faculty severely disliked me. It is not Western music if we cannot play on Web Audio in Mozilla Firefox because it is not standardized for all humanity.
