I'm looking for recommendations for good, reasonably priced note-taking apps. A must-have feature is web clipping, both as a browser plug in and on Android.
I've been using Evernote for years, but they are more than doubling their fees in January 2026. So I need to switch.
So. Suggestions, anyone?
Thanks.

Evernote is forcing a decision on me
As a creature of app habit, I’ve kept paying for Evernote even as the rates for my note-taking app of choice have increased considerably–mainly because the new management at that service has improved it tremendously. But now that Evernote’s corporate parent Bending Spoons has discontinued my $129.99/year Personal plan and presented me with a choice between a $99.99/year Starter plan that seems clearly inadequate and a $249.99/year Advanced plan that brings more than I need, I need to rethink that habit.
That 92% rate increase itself requires reconsideration, but it’s not the only thing. There’s the odds of a company on a venture-capital-fueled spending spree that somehow incluces buying AOL will see fit to jack up the annual rate again; I also have to assess whether Evernote’s bosses might make it harder to take my data out of the app that I’ve used since 2010.
But looking over such other note-taking app options as OneNote, Joplin, and Notion while comparing their features, I don’t see an obvious escape pod.
These are my priorities in this indecision-making process, in rough order of descending importance:
- Cross-platform support–macOS, Windows, Android, iOS–is not negotiable, which is why I didn’t mention Apple Notes above.
- I need any other app to import my Evernote archives no less than one notebook at a time; that seems to rule out Microsoft’s OneNote, even though I pay for it as part of my Microsoft 365 subscription.
- I need reliable synchronization, ideally the almost real-time sync that Evernote now does so well. That may be the thing I need to trade to shave all or part of $250 a year from my online-services budget.
- Yearly cost below this year’s $129.99.
- Offline support, because I know how well CES WiFi works.
- Voice transcription for recording interviews, which I’ve come to rely on over the past year.
- Text recognition from a photo of a business card, so I can look up the details of somebody I met without adding them to my contacts list.
- Robust export options so I don’t get stuck in another company’s silo.
- The option of encrypting at least some notes on an end-to-end basis.
- A long-term focus from the app’s developers–why I don’t consider Google Keep, since Google introducing that a week after killiing Google Reader still leaves me with trust issues beyond my trying to reduce the number of single points of failure in my digital life.
Looking over this and comparing it to the research I’ve done so far, I think this makes me look like a Joplin user. Unless the lag that open-source app cites–the most frequent sync interval it allows for the OneDrive cloud storage I already pay for is every five minutes–instead makes me look like somebody who should suck up the extra cost of Evernote, considering what a small fraction it is of my other operating costs.
I wish this choice were clearer. I also wish that I didn’t have to figure this out at the peak cognitive-load period of my year.

Rnote 0.12 Released with Improved Linux Note-Taking Features
A major new release of Rnote, an open-source app for taking handwritten notes, sketching out ideas and annotating documents and pictures, is out. Rnote 0.12 brings several new features, new customisation and configuration options, user experience buffs, bug fixes, and other lower-level tune-ups. For those unfamiliar with it, Rnote is a digital note-taking app built using GTK4 and Rust. It’s primarily intended to be used with stylus input (so includes pen pressure, stroke styles, button actions, etc) but supports typed text entry, shapes, importing images, etc too. Rnote offers a range of document layouts, from fixed pages to infinite canvases, :sys_more_orange:

Authentication & Identity Management
- Authelia (Docker): Just set this up for two-factor authentication and single sign-on. Seems to be working well so far!
- LLDAP (Docker): Lightweight LDAP server for managing authentication. Also seems to be working pretty well!
#AuthenticationTools #IdentityManagement
Productivity & Personal Tools
- Docker Management: #Dockge (Docker). More accessible than Portainer; main issue is built-in terminal isn't readable with screen readers. #DockerCompose
- Docker Logs Viewer: #Dozzle (Docker), great web interface and easy searching.
- Git Hosting: #Forgejo (non-Docker), my personal Git server. #GitServer

Notifications & Development Workflow
- Notifications via: #Ntfy (Docker) and Zoho's ZeptoMail (#Zoho)
- Development Environment: Mostly using VSCode connected to my server via Remote-SSH extension. #VSCodeRemote
Accessibility Focus ♿️🖥️
Accessibility heavily influences my choices—I use a screen reader full-time (#ScreenReader), so I prioritize services usable without sight (#InclusiveDesign, #DigitalAccessibility). Always open to discussing accessibility experiences or recommendations!
I've also experimented with:
- Ollama (#Ollama): Not enough RAM on my Pi.
- Habit trackers like Beaver Habit Tracker (#HabitTracking): Accessibility issues made it unusable for me.
I don't really have a media collection, so no Plex or Jellyfin here (#MediaServer)—but I'm always open to suggestions! I've gotten a bit addicted to exploring new self-hosted services! 😄
What's your setup like? Any cool services you'd recommend I try?

#ObsidianMD actually changes my #wayofthinking by making me write down absolutely every thought and piece of information that i might need sometime. Not only will it contain most of my #knowledge, but it also make it so easy to find, when needed.

I'm still not out of the rabbit hole of searching for an #OpenSource #PersonalKnowledgeManagement software. 🐰
I'm gonna give a second try to @zettlr tomorrow! Their docs are *surprisingly* user-friendly and they claim to stick to the pure #CommonMark where probable. It's all the while being nice to researchers with citing, inline usage of #TeXLaTeX, #MermaidJS, and pop-over #footnotes. Provision of the simple #PDF export and #Pandoc customization are welcome, too!
But, to be fair, I may be overexaggerating how good #Zettlr is because of my recent disgust with #VendorLocking. In fact, almost anything that closely follows the common spec and is #FreeSoftware might suffice already. Having something as advanced and closer to the roots is certainly refreshing!

It's taken me some time to figure it out, as I found it confusing initially, but I am now enjoying using the #anytype note taking app. Offline and local first, fully compatible across devices, supports markdown and keeps notes and files in the same place. Worth a look at https://anytype.io

Being #ADHD, I collect note taking apps. My favorite was Evernote, but as with all good things tech, it eventually went downhill. The phone app crashed constantly, they limited the number of devices..it just sucked.
I used Google Keep, OneNote, Simplenote, and could not get my head around Notion. Recently, I found a thread on #beehaw looking for a OneNote replacement. One of the suggestions was #Notesnook.
Holy sheet! It's Evernote, but better! E2E encryption, zero knowledge policy great phone app.....
I. SO. HAPPY.

Darin Suthapong came up with a minimalistic framework for #NoteTaking with examples in #NoteTakingApps such as @obsidian, #Logseq, etc.
I called these folders uniformly: 📆 Days, 📝 Perms, 🔗 Refs, and 🎯 Hubs. The point worth stressing is that, if you see anything connect, don't hesitate and type a link right where you're standing.

@kadin True! I've not used #Evernote but compared to most #NoteTakingApps, I find #obsidian to be the most flexible and the most optimized for long-form writing. Markdown saved directly on my drive? Fantastic. Customizable keyboard shortcuts galore? Love it. The fact that I can have a personal vault and a work vault with key UI tweaks based on what plugins I need for each context? Unprecedented.
Just gotta remember to spend more time writing and less time playing with plugins 😆

EverSticky: Sticky Notes App for Linux that Syncs to Evernote
When it comes to sticky note apps for Linux it’s fair to say we’re spoilt for choice – heck knows I’ve tried most of the ones out there! EverSticky is another open-source sticky notes app for Linux but it has a major difference: it syncs to Evernote, the hugely-popular note taking and task management service. Existing Evernote users will find this a compelling USP as, with minimal effort, it’s easy to take notes and keep them in sync across multiple devices. EverSticky is a Qt-based app created by developer Joey Miller. But it’s fully compatible with most modern Linux desktops :sys_more_orange:

Meet Paper, a New GTK Note Taking App for Linux
If you’re seeking out a note taking app for Linux you’ll want to check out Paper. Paper is a modern GTK app that pitches itself as a ‘pretty note-taking app for GNOME’ — it is! Being based around Markdown also means this app can do everything essential when writing notes, such as text formatting, adding links, highlighting sections of text, inserting code blocks, and more. Now, I class myself as more of a casual note taker. I use apps like this to squirrel away ideas I have for future posts, commands I ought to remember, and …Well, lists of He-Man :sys_more_orange:

Scrivano is a New App to Take Handwritten Notes on Linux
If I asked you to name a handwritten note-taking app for Linux chases are you’d namecheck Xournal++. It’s arguably the best one out there as it’s open source, well featured, and a real best-in-class application. But there’s always room for more. Scrivano is a relatively new hand-written note taking app for Linux (and Windows) that could prove itself handy for anyone looking to jot down hand-written notes, draw simple charts and diagrams, mark-up images, and other similarly nimble tasks. The app features four different paper backgrounds: Plain, Lined, Grid, or Dotted. The space between the lines/dots/grid spaces are all configurable :sys_more_orange:

‘UpNote’ Note-Taking App is Now Available on Linux
If you’re yet to settle on a note-taking service that works across platforms you may want to check out a new option now available for Linux: UpNote. Now, I will mention upfront that the UpNote Linux client is Electron-based, and it is closed-source, proprietary software. The service does offer a free tier that lets you create “up to” 50 notes using basic features but you will need to shell out $0.99/month subscription (or pay a $19.99 one off fee) to create more than this, and unlock advanced options like tables, attachments, and extra export options. If you’ve read all of :sys_more_orange:

‘Rnote’ is an Impressive Freehand Note Taking App Built in Rust & GTK4
Rnote is a seriously impressive freehand note taking app written in Rust and GTK4. I came across it on Flathub this week and, within seconds of installing it, I knew I had to give it a bit of a spotlight. If you’ve got a laptop with a stylus or touch-enabled screen and you use GNOME Shell you have to try it out. Rnote is billed by its developer as a “simple note taking application written in Rust and GTK4”. I spent about 20 minutes playing around with it (albeit with a mouse as primary input) and it’s really quite polished :sys_more_orange:

Linux Mint’s (Ace) Sticky Notes App Works Great on Ubuntu
If you’re half as forgetful as I am then you’ll… —Nope, sorry; I’ve forgotten where I was going with this, so let’s talk about Linux Mint’s neat sticky notes app instead. I used to use real post-it notes in real life. A ton of them. I’d use them remind me to buy cat food, put the bins out, and unclog the sink. But most of my sticky notes ended up face down on my desk, dog eared and ignored (or, on more than one occasion stuck to the back of the cat 💁🏻♂️). These days I keep on top of :sys_more_orange:

Is ‘jnrl’ the Best Journaling App for the Command Line?
Want to log your thoughts and memories without leaving the command line? A reader recently mailed in to tell me about an app called jrnl, a journaling app with a difference: it’s designed to be used from a terminal, not a web browser or mobile app. Now, journaling isn’t for everyone (I don’t keep a journal myself) but you can use this app as a general purpose notebook or jotter to log your thoughts, ideas, musings, experiments, and so on in. If I’d known about jrnl when writing my list of command line apps for Ubuntu I dare say I’d :sys_more_orange:
