Researchers, Phd's, HDR's, Master by Research, those of you out there annotating your journals, what do you use the various colours to represent?

Screenshot from Zotero Reference Manager. Ps. I love Zotero, Open Source and Free and my research will alway availble to me without a fee.

  3. Here's another @zotero plugin for you! Search & Replace in Library metadata. I always missed a convenient way to remove Worldcat URLs from printed books. Ugly and unnecessary. Now you can. It's a pre-release, so back up your library because it may wreak havoc. github.com/milekpl/zotero-sear #Zotero #referenceManager #academic

  7. Anyone here has used both #Zotero and #Endnote?

If so, which one do you prefer (if we set aside the fact that one is non-profit and the other is an exploitative for-profit)? Like, on the features and ease of use only?

  10. Switching from EndNote to Zotero? Not as smooth as I hoped.

    Wanted:
export EndNote library with PDFs, notes & group structure
    Got:
    * no group export via RIS/XML, had to do it manually,
    * double records for refs in multiple groups
    * lost (research) notes
    * syncing to Zotero web = painfully slow
    * limited storage 2GB (have to pay 120$/year for unlimited storage)

  12. I just purchased MS Office, and what a great decision that was. Now I’m looking for a reference manager that works well with JAWS and Word. Ideally something accessible, stable, and reliable for academic writing. Does anyone have any recommendations?

  14. @davidschlangen

Congratulations! Did not happen to me yet, it's only my students who cite hallucinated work of mine.

Google should no try and detect AI automatically to protect google scholar from lunacity.

I never thought of GS in connection to AI fake, but the fun part of this is that all the fake cites will learn that way that the author is a layer.

Yes, maybe wait. But this is a real problem, since this means that reviewers should check every cited item. Or editors? Or both? I am beginning to really hate all of these silly AI users. They put extra work on us.

But we sort of have solved this problem for @langscipress by requiring that authors use reference managers.

  21. I’ve used Mendeley since I was an undergrad, but the bugs have worn me down and I want to switch. I think Zotero looks to be the best place to go next?

Now I just need to overcome the rage (and effort barrier) that I can’t transfer the library structure from Mendeley in one go, thanks for that Elsevier…

  23. I see that #Zotero can synchronise across devices using #Webdav. Has anyone tried that and if so, is it reliably working? And if so, could you point to an explanation of how to make it work even if I have no idea of what Webdav is?

(I need to switch from using the Zotero storage because I'm out of space (yes even on a $60/y plan) and need to sync across multiple computers + phone + Boox tablet.)

  25. Do you use a reference manager, such as Zotero or Endnote? The Utrecht University Library would like to help you better use and manage references. That is why we would like to learn which tools you use.

  28. !!! A big Zotero update!! Exciting!! 🥳
    My favourite:
“Hovering over a citation or internal link now opens a popup showing the associated reference or figure. No need to jump back and forth just to check a reference.” So cool!!

  30. We finally released #JabRef 5.15 - now with a proper blog post, and this time with correct binaries for intel macs and fixes for #snap users.

This release comes with some nice improvements for #TeXLaTeX users, as can be seen in the video.

And we added experimental support for using #bst styles as Preview.
Despite that, we also did the usual bug fixing and UI improvements

  34. #Zotero still asking $60 for 1 year of 6Gb… 😭 @zotero I love you all but it’s 2024 now, maybe you could either reduce the price or increase what we get for it?

Edit: not even 60… just SIX

  36. I'm still not out of the rabbit hole of searching for an #OpenSource #PersonalKnowledgeManagement software. 🐰

I'm gonna give a second try to @zettlr tomorrow! Their docs are *surprisingly* user-friendly and they claim to stick to the pure #CommonMark where probable. It's all the while being nice to researchers with citing, inline usage of #TeXLaTeX, #MermaidJS, and pop-over #footnotes. Provision of the simple #PDF export and #Pandoc customization are welcome, too!

But, to be fair, I may be overexaggerating how good #Zettlr is because of my recent disgust with #VendorLocking. In fact, almost anything that closely follows the common spec and is #FreeSoftware might suffice already. Having something as advanced and closer to the roots is certainly refreshing!

  38. @aspiringcat @academicchatter

Some like Paperpile for google docs. I find all bibliography reference managers awful. The least awful ended up being plain BibTex for LaTeX documents: at least it's easy to backup, simple to update, and fairly simple scripts (even a regular expression) can parse and generate its entries, there are command line tools for merging BibTex files, and both pubmed and google scholar export to BibTex.

Agreed that a better, more integrated and aware bibliography system should be possible. The fact that it doesn't exist suggests either there isn't a business case or multiple enthusiasts tried and failed given the many corner cases and unexpected difficulties.

  40. @gubi How did this move from #Mendeley to #zotero work for you? I've been using Mendeley since 2012 (so long before it was bought by #elsevier !) but the cloud version and this new Mendeley Cite thing in Word are driving me nuts today. I don't have time to wait for it to constantly think about every reference 😳 #ReferenceManager #academicchatter #academicmastodon #publishing

  42. This Semantic Scholar stuff is pretty good at finding new relevant papers! I suggest giving it a go. You have to give some papers and categories to start and then it will find you relevant papers every week.

Last thought: I kind of stumbled upon Paperpile, but I’ve been using it for the past several years and just love it. My biggest fear is that they seem like a small company and I don’t know what the support is like or how long they will stay in business… But I love them and try to by it for all of my students when working on larger projects. #referencemanager

  46. I am reviewing papers and I have an idea. As of last year I request students to submit a file containing all the references they have in their paper in the format of their #referenceManager (eg, rdf or bibtex). This forces them to use one and I hope that they will stick to it once the realize how much work this safes. I think research will get better by enforcing this. So: How about jounrals and book publishers requiring refmanager files for all submissions? @glossa @langscipress

  47. @vartak @harcel Paperpile plus Google docs is an absolute dream. Been using it for papers and grants years now and it just works, probably a hundred documents so far. They added a reference style including PMCIDs for NIH grants for us years ago! I recall maybe one glitch in all that time. #PaperPile #ReferenceManager
