  5. RE: mastodon.social/@joplinapp/116

@joplinapp is an amazing #NoteTakingApp which I've been using for the past 1 and a half year already!

After migrating out from #AppleNotes, I've tried other alternatives and, by far, Joplin was the best for me, for its simplicity yet feature rich.

I use it for quick notes, but also to write long texts.

It's easy to organize and search for your notes, and the tag system is very handy, specially to group scattered notes!

I really recommend it to everyone!

  7. #Productivity thought

One of the things I would LOVE to see with #OmniFocus is the ability to create a linked note in something like #Obsidian or #AppleNotes.

While OmniFocus does have a little bit of a notes area, my notes section tends to be super intense with links everywhere.

It's Friday. I might look into doing this with OmniFocus automations or #KeyboardMaestro

  9. two things that steered me from #AppleNotes to #Obsidian

    - A lot of the text i create i end up pasting into #teams .. Notes didn't handle that well.
    - #Bases is a hard to beat feature.

  11. @geotux MEGA! Vielen Dank.
    you-made-my-day 🥳

  13. wondering if i want to upgrade to @OmniOutliner 6.0.

I am supoer interested in #OmniLinks , but i currently use @hookmark and this is totally awesome.

One thing that would make me instantly convert is if it presented an interface like #AppleNotes, where all of your documents were incorporated into the interface.

Right now, I approximate that with #devonthink

  15. We cry about icons, but what about basic functionality?
Apple Notes on Mac in the latest release RESETS the sidebar / folder list when you delete a nested folder somewhere scrolled down. Or, if you're at the end of the note that fills the screen, scroll enough to leave plenty of space below, and then paste something, space below gets trimmed and the bottom of last line gets cut off.

Does no one in the Apple C-suite use 1st party software?

  19. After having a productivity system in constant flux for decades, I finally have something that I haven't significantly changed in a year or so. Pretty much:
#Drafts - As a starting point for almost everything. Even this post!
#AppleNotes - for notes I want to keep around forever.
#OmniFocus - For all task management.
#DevonThink - To store all the things and find them later
#Hookmark - To link them all together

  21. Evernote is forcing a decision on me

As a creature of app habit, I’ve kept paying for Evernote even as the rates for my note-taking app of choice have increased considerably–mainly because the new management at that service has improved it tremendously. But now that Evernote’s corporate parent Bending Spoons has discontinued my $129.99/year Personal plan and presented me with a choice between a $99.99/year Starter plan that seems clearly inadequate and a $249.99/year Advanced plan that brings more than I need, I need to rethink that habit.

That 92% rate increase itself requires reconsideration, but it’s not the only thing. There’s the odds of a company on a venture-capital-fueled spending spree that somehow incluces buying AOL will see fit to jack up the annual rate again; I also have to assess whether Evernote’s bosses might make it harder to take my data out of the app that I’ve used since 2010.

But looking over such other note-taking app options as OneNote, Joplin, and Notion while comparing their features, I don’t see an obvious escape pod.

These are my priorities in this indecision-making process, in rough order of descending importance:

    • Cross-platform support–macOS, Windows, Android, iOS–is not negotiable, which is why I didn’t mention Apple Notes above.
    • I need any other app to import my Evernote archives no less than one notebook at a time; that seems to rule out Microsoft’s OneNote, even though I pay for it as part of my Microsoft 365 subscription.
    • I need reliable synchronization, ideally the almost real-time sync that Evernote now does so well. That may be the thing I need to trade to shave all or part of $250 a year from my online-services budget.
    • Yearly cost below this year’s $129.99.
    • Offline support, because I know how well CES WiFi works.
    • Voice transcription for recording interviews, which I’ve come to rely on over the past year.
    • Text recognition from a photo of a business card, so I can look up the details of somebody I met without adding them to my contacts list.
    • Robust export options so I don’t get stuck in another company’s silo.
    • The option of encrypting at least some notes on an end-to-end basis.
    • A long-term focus from the app’s developers–why I don’t consider Google Keep, since Google introducing that a week after killiing Google Reader still leaves me with trust issues beyond my trying to reduce the number of single points of failure in my digital life.

Looking over this and comparing it to the research I’ve done so far, I think this makes me look like a Joplin user. Unless the lag that open-source app cites–the most frequent sync interval it allows for the OneDrive cloud storage I already pay for is every five minutes–instead makes me look like somebody who should suck up the extra cost of Evernote, considering what a small fraction it is of my other operating costs

I wish this choice were clearer. I also wish that I didn’t have to figure this out at the peak cognitive-load period of my year.

  26. I feel like i need to explore the scripting abilities of #OmniOutliner . I think the the document interface feels dated, but I could use it as a framework for tracking my charges.

I wish it had an interface more like #DraftsApp or #AppleNotes where I could access documents much more quickly.

If I could use it to access an API, lots of my issues could be overlooked.

  30. I've been looking for alternatives to 2 particular #macOS apps: #applemusic and #applenotes .
For music, I think I've cracked it: #DeaDBeeF player. The macOS version is a nightly but it works perfectly, and lets me sort by album in year order within artist, with all kinds of customisation possible within a simple intuitive UI.
For notes, I may have to return to #joplin which I'm not overly enthusiastic about, but at least it uses #markdown .

  32. @jarunmb #AppleNotes is a really, really good tool. For people/families wholesale invested in Apple's ecosystem it's superb - despite a couple of bizarre quirks like not being able to set a default font for newly-composed notes nor literally ANY ability to change font when using the iPhone.

For #Windows though, fuck it and in particular FUCK #Drafts for not having a Windows version. #Obsidian is king. It's the loincloth-wearing, top-of-the-mountain uber-pinnacle of PKM.

  34. @viharm @jarunmb Don't get me wrong. I never said it didn't "work" for me. It did - for a full year. But here's the thing. I have two requirements for notes. One is immediate quick notes - what a lot of people use #AppleNotes, or #Drafts for. But I have #WINDOWS as well. Neither of those work. I use #Simplenote for it. Syncs multiplatform and I could give a fuck about it not being end-to-end secured. #Obsidian for cold-storage of notes. (1/3)

In this worked example, I show how to create formatted text in iPadOS 26, how the process works to export to Markdown, and how the files and any images look in plain text editors as Markdown. It’s really cool!
