  14. Got us easily under the space constraint. But now they've pivoted to all code on BitBucket is trainable and I just can't abide that. I finished moving all repos to #ForgeJo. Now we're flying without the corporate "safety net" of many many replicated file systems. More at risk of failure, though we're backing up locally and offsite. But complete control and it's honestly faster. 😂

I used to use #trello before it enshittified. Switched to local #markdown notes with #Obsidian. Now I'm fully out.

  22. Someone on the /r/blind subreddit asked about #Accessible #Markdown editors for #iOS, and not knowing of any, I decided to port my little ghostWriter web app into a proper native mobile app. Introducing ghostWriter Markdown, another #Blind first app for writing Markdown, rendering and sharing HTML, and syncing to iCloud from your iPhone or iPad. I'm proud of the Outline feature, which automatically takes all your headings and turns them into a navigable table of contents. VoiceOver and keyboard focus is remembered and preserved in your files even when jumping between files, and I added in an Insert tool if you need help with the syntax. The app is lightweight, will show you customizable info like word and character count, and has options that allow for immediate file creation upon opening the app for fast notetaking. Check it out! apps.apple.com/us/app/ghostwri

  26. Common advice: do not feed Word docs to AI. I measured it. Passing raw bytes, a .docx costs 279x what Markdown costs. Feeding it through a tool that extracts text first costs within 2 percent. The advice is half right. The penalty is in the bytes.

  28. Just released. Judging from its Table of Contents, it promises to be very interesting in mere historical and technical terms. My suspiction is that it runs the danger of being too much enciclopedic.

From Markup to Markdown: The Evolution of Technical Writing, Typesetting Tools and Frameworks

    Jim Hall (Apress)

“From Markup to Markdown is a history of how writers have used computers to write, and a look ahead to see what the future looks like for technical writing. This book explores both “technology history” and “how it works” about how we write with computers, with code examples so readers can explore and fully understand how each writing tool and framework works behind the scenes.

Starting with an overview of the major milestones of writing with digital technologies since the 1960s, you will learn about RUNOFF and how this inspired roff on Unix (and the more familiar versions, nroff and troff). You will also explore word processing milestones like WordStar, and printing technologies like the phototypesetter and the dot matrix printer, before moving onto modern markup and writing systems like HTML, Markdown and DITA and how they play a role in how we write today.

From Markup to Markdown is ideal for writers, technical communication professionals, history of computing researchers as well as “retro-computing” enthusiasts.

    You Will Learn to:

    - Explore the history of technical writing in the age of the personal computer, from the 1960s to the present day
    - Understand how the technologies and tools have evolved over time
    - Learn how each tool works with simple and clear code samples and exercises, giving you an under-the-hood understanding of how each system works, from RUNOFF markup to modern Markdown

    This Book is For:
    - Technical writers, technology history enthusiasts and researchers.”

  32. Hey all, just wanted to share a really simple little trick I figured out for repeating the last command you used in Obsidian .

**be warned**: this will literally run anything that you just ran. Whatever the last command you ran was, whether it be a native one or a plug-in, it doesn't matter this will execute it.

    `this.app.commands.executeCommandById(this.app.internalPlugins.getPluginById('command-palette').instance.recentCommands[0]);`

One way to make a usable button on your toolbar would be to go into your template settings, assign this script to a command which will automatically add it to obsidian, then go to your mobile toolbar settings, click add new command, and select your script.

    boom done

in the attached clip I'm using a plug-in called code emitter to accomplish essentially the same thing and so that you can more easily see what's going on. All that does is allow a code block to contain code of language X, and the plug-in executes the code, in this case, JavaScript.

    ---

I'm still only able to use an iPad for everything, and so Obsidian on mobile is a godsend for me. I can write my fiction, and my code, all in one app, and it's free, and customizable as heck.

I didn't want to clog my ball up with 1 million plug-ins so I try to write my own templater scripts whenever possible.
