  5. I'm hating the new OneNote.

It could at least look cute if it was going to be this painful to use. I'll forgive a LOT for a cute aesthetic.

  10. #Microsoft Ersetzungen:

  12. @jarango Everything true.

    However, I disagree with #Markdown: karl-voit.at/2025/08/17/Markdo

It's way more open than, let's say, #OneNote & so forth. Unfortunately, it's far from being a #textformat that can be reused anywhere without problems. At least I need to convert MD all the time from one flavor to a different.

With more and more #Obsidian add-ons introducing their own syntax elements, you will end up with clear text files you still can't convert for a different tool without modifications. Good luck with finding out which elements are going to survive and which not. For a few files, that seems OK. If you have a decent #PKM like you describe in your awesome #DulyNoted book, it requires more effort.

For everything I need to use with #MD, I keep a syntax file with one example element so that I keep an overview & know what to convert how in case I need to reuse information stored in this MD flavor.

    With org, I just push it through #pandoc & I'm done. 🤷

  15. Not long ago, and Microsoft Office upgrade broke screen reader's ability to read tags in One Note. For example, if I insert a to do tag with control+1, JAWS doesn't indicate the tag is there at all. This means I can't see if the to do tag is checked or not. I also can't use other tags like "important". This is one of the main reasons I use One Note, and if this doesn't get fixed, I'll need to look for another note taking solution.

  17. This is pretty interesting, and if I could get it to save my dictated notes to #OneNote I'd be even more interested. The "single-use" nature of it is interesting and dictates the fairly low price point. #SmartRing

  18. Evernote is forcing a decision on me

As a creature of app habit, I’ve kept paying for Evernote even as the rates for my note-taking app of choice have increased considerably–mainly because the new management at that service has improved it tremendously. But now that Evernote’s corporate parent Bending Spoons has discontinued my $129.99/year Personal plan and presented me with a choice between a $99.99/year Starter plan that seems clearly inadequate and a $249.99/year Advanced plan that brings more than I need, I need to rethink that habit.

That 92% rate increase itself requires reconsideration, but it’s not the only thing. There’s the odds of a company on a venture-capital-fueled spending spree that somehow incluces buying AOL will see fit to jack up the annual rate again; I also have to assess whether Evernote’s bosses might make it harder to take my data out of the app that I’ve used since 2010.

But looking over such other note-taking app options as OneNote, Joplin, and Notion while comparing their features, I don’t see an obvious escape pod.

These are my priorities in this indecision-making process, in rough order of descending importance:

    • Cross-platform support–macOS, Windows, Android, iOS–is not negotiable, which is why I didn’t mention Apple Notes above.
    • I need any other app to import my Evernote archives no less than one notebook at a time; that seems to rule out Microsoft’s OneNote, even though I pay for it as part of my Microsoft 365 subscription.
    • I need reliable synchronization, ideally the almost real-time sync that Evernote now does so well. That may be the thing I need to trade to shave all or part of $250 a year from my online-services budget.
    • Yearly cost below this year’s $129.99.
    • Offline support, because I know how well CES WiFi works.
    • Voice transcription for recording interviews, which I’ve come to rely on over the past year.
    • Text recognition from a photo of a business card, so I can look up the details of somebody I met without adding them to my contacts list.
    • Robust export options so I don’t get stuck in another company’s silo.
    • The option of encrypting at least some notes on an end-to-end basis.
    • A long-term focus from the app’s developers–why I don’t consider Google Keep, since Google introducing that a week after killiing Google Reader still leaves me with trust issues beyond my trying to reduce the number of single points of failure in my digital life.

Looking over this and comparing it to the research I’ve done so far, I think this makes me look like a Joplin user. Unless the lag that open-source app cites–the most frequent sync interval it allows for the OneDrive cloud storage I already pay for is every five minutes–instead makes me look like somebody who should suck up the extra cost of Evernote, considering what a small fraction it is of my other operating costs

I wish this choice were clearer. I also wish that I didn’t have to figure this out at the peak cognitive-load period of my year.

#Microsoft365 #Onenote #Obsidian #Notion #ToDo #Todoist #Outlook #Thunderbird #AppleNotes, #Nextcloud uvm.? Brauche ich einen #Feedreader? Und was ist eigenlich #RSS?

  26. I'm guessing it's not really a bug in the Kindle as many tech forums have said. I'm thinking good old #Amazon is not properly updating #OneNote on older #KindleFire tablets.

As a reminder you'll need to figure out how to allow the Kindle Fire to accept sources outside of the Amazon App store. There's tons of forums on how to do that.

  27. #OneNote #KindleFire

For many Kindles out there OneNote is not syncing properly. It's probably the one app I use more than the Kindle reader itself. They got me hooked back in the Windows Phone days when the specs of that phone were incredible for the price.

Anyhow, the work around I found is found in this thread here: learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answ

Basically you grab the latest apk from here onenote.en.uptodown.com/androi

    Install and reboot.

  31. I recently switched from #OneNote to #Markdown as my primary #notetaking setup. Loving it, but why can't the commuity agree on a common standard for #admonitions / #callouts? Love it to have an #infovbox toolbar item to insert nice... yes infoboxes/adminitions/callouts (how you want to call it). But nearly every Markdown editor/engine uses their own annotation, which makes it hard to use the feature.

  32. #Windows11's new #StickyNotes app (a thinly disguised #OneNote) is fucking annoying. Since it is so-called "smart", and it attempts to provide context around the "source" of your note, its window is constantly updating with "current source" ALL THE TIME. Its visually distracting AF.

And it can't be disabled. Do better #Microsoft.

Office wird Only Office werden, was bereits schon teste.

    Bitwarden wird der Passwortmanager.

Email wird wahrscheinlich Thunderbird. Wer hier was besseres kennt, einfach antworten.

    Teil 2 drunter

    #Linux #Windows #Microsoft #Vivaldi #Bitwarden #OnlyOffice #OneNote #StickyNotes #Affinity

Gibt's da was?

  37. Of course, if you do have long-time plans for your personal #knowledgemanagement, you should not use proprietary tools like #Obsidian, #OneNote, #Evernote and alike.

You also should think of switching to a much better (learnability, portability/compatibility, typobility, logic, featureset) markup syntax like #orgdown which is used in #Emacs #Orgmode (among other tools).

But if you start with Org-mode, you need to know the right way of doing it, as so many web pages recommend. Here's my take:

#UOMF: The Right Way to Use #OrgMode

A specific blog post about the #lockin effects of Obsidian and Co (despite using some tool-specific flavor of MD) is in the making. (Please don't start a religious discussion here.)

    #publicvoit #PIM #PKM

  38. If you're using #Microsoft #OneNote, you will face disadvantages when you don't switch to #Windows11 soon:

You are forced to "One Note on Windows" which requires a #Microsoft365 account. If you want to keep your previous computer/OS, your synchronization speed gets reduced just to punish your disobedience: windowslatest.com/2025/03/24/m

For anything that requires a certain amount of privacy/security, for anything long-term (avoiding #lockin effects), OneNote was a bad idea in the first place.

People who started with the original OneNote already faced data loss when MS forced them into the then mediocre cloud version in 2018: karl-voit.at/2018/04/21/end-of

My recommendation: re-evaluate your requirements and switch to a much better long-term alternative, such as #Emacs #Orgmode & not yet another hip lock-in monster like #Obsidian, #Evernote or other closed source #cloud solutions: karl-voit.at/2021/01/18/tool-c
