the reason #filmmaking is so alluring in the public mind is because everyone secretly wants to see their film, and every bad and shaky choice they made in it, at least 200 times before it is released.

that's the magic of movies!

so I haven't yet found a good replacement for Vimeo On Demand (formerly VHX), where filmmakers can sort of build their own film distribution but I did see some recent posts about Indieo, which offers streaming AND theater splits (90% and 45% to filmmaker). But I did some simple maths and their streaming claims come out to ten cents (.10) per view, which really isn't any better than any other platform out there. And it has ads.

Μερικές σκέψεις για την Οδύσσεια του Nolan.

Τώρα λοιπόν που η διαφημιστική καμπάνια της Οδύσσειας του Nolan έχει σχεδόν ολοκληρωθεί και οι συζητήσεις για το έργο αρχίζουν να γίνονται παρωχημένες, εγώ βρήκα λίγο χρόνο για να γράψω δυο σκέψεις.

Το πλέον πολυσυζητημένο ζήτημα είναι η επιλογή μίας Μαύρης ηθοποιού, της Lupita Nyong'o για το ρόλο της Ωραίας Ελένης, αν και τελικά αυτή η συζήτηση συμπυκνώνει ένα μεγαλύτερο θέμα, το κατά πόσο το κοινό έχει τη διάθεση να δεχτεί τον έντονο woke χαρακτήρα που διακατέχει όλη την ταινία. Δυστυχώς, στο δημόσιο διάλογο αυτή η σκηνοθετική επιλογή εγκλωβίστηκε σε ένα δίπολο μεταξύ ακροδεξιών από την μία, και (κυρίως κεντροαριστερών) δικαιωματιστών από την άλλη, ενώ τα επιχειρήματα που βρίσκονταν εκτός του δίπολου ελάχιστα ακούστηκαν. Η αντικειμενικά προκλητική κίνηση του Nolan να προβάλει μία Μαύρη Ωραία Ελένη ενεργοποίησε τον κάθε ρατσιστή και το internet γέμισε με μισαλλόδοξες ανοησίες. Απέναντι σε αυτόν τον εύκολα γελοιοποιήσιμο αντίπαλο στάθηκε πλήθος δικαιωματιστών όπου προς υπεράσπιση της δικής τους ατζέντας επιδίωξε να παρουσιάσει κάθε κριτική που δέχτηκε το casting ως ακροδεξιά. Είναι όμως έτσι;

Πόσο συμφωνούμε με τις αναρίθμητες Χολιγουντιανές ταινίες για σαμουράι, ιθαγενείς, και άλλες φυλές, όπου οι πρωταγωνιστές είναι Λευκοί Αμερικάνοι; Αλλά και πόσο θα συμφωνούσαμε αν βλέπαμε μία ταινία για Βίκινγκ με πρωταγωνιστές Μαύρους; Το πρόβλημα εδώ δεν είναι αποκλειστικά οι Μαύροι, αλλά η ψευδής προβολή της κοινωνίας ως πολυφυλετικής, αποτελούμενη επίσης από Ασιάτες, Ινδούς, Λατινοαμερικάνους, και Ευρωπαίους. Ενώ το Μεσογειακό στοιχείο είναι σχεδόν εξαφανισμένο.

Όταν κάνεις μία ταινία για ένα συγκεκριμένο λαό και μία συγκεκριμένη γεωγραφική περιοχή, ο μόνος τρόπος να σεβαστείς την εικόνα του ως προς την αναπαράστασή του στη μεγάλη οθόνη είναι μέσα από την υιοθέτηση των ιδιαίτερων χαρακτηριστικών του, έστω εν μέρει. Και οι Αχαιοί του τότε, δεν είχαν αυτά τα πολυφυλετικά χαρακτηριστικά.

Ο Nolan δεν κάνει ούτε την παραμικρή προσπάθεια για να φτιάξει μία ταινία που έστω να προσεγγίζει την ιστορική πραγματικότητα. Το τοπίο όπου διαδραματίζεται η ταινία είναι σκοτεινό (με μία εμμονική προσκόλληση στον πορτοκαλί φωτισμό για να δίνει ένταση), το σεξ έχει διαγραφεί ώστε το προϊόν να είναι family-friendly, τα κουστούμια δε θυμίζουν την ενδυμασία της εποχής (λευκές και μαύρες πανοπλίες δίχως χρηστική αξία για να τονιστεί η αντίθεση ανάμεσα σε καλό-κακό, για εικαστικούς λόγους η Αθηνά φοράει μαντίλι, κ.λπ.), και οι χορογραφημένες μαχητικές σκηνές δεν έχουν τίποτα το ρεαλιστικό (κατά την άλωση της Τροίας δε φόραγαν καν περικεφαλαίες). Η σύνθεση της κοινωνίας δεν έχει σχεδόν κανένα στοιχείο από Ελληνικές και Μεσογειακές φυλές, ενώ περιέχει ένα τρανς άτομο.

Αντιθέτως, επιδιώκεται η αναπαράσταση των κοινωνικών χαρακτηριστικών των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών του σήμερα. Μίας κοινωνίας με έντονες εσωτερικές αντιθέσεις (συμπεριλαμβανομένων των φυλετικών) που προσπαθεί να αποδείξει στον εαυτό της ότι οι αντιθέσεις της μπορούν να ξεπεραστούν ώστε ενωμένη και ισχυρή να διατηρήσει την παγκόσμια κυριαρχία.

Γίνεται εμφανές με τον πλέον εμβληματικό τρόπο, ότι το πολύκροτο “whitewashing” δεν εξαλείφθηκε καθόλου, αλλά μεταλλάχτηκε σε “usa-washing”. Καπηλεύεται πολιτισμικά στοιχεία ενός άλλου λαού, τον οποίο και εξοβελίζει από την αναπαράσταση στην οθόνη. Οι Αχαιοί μέσα από τον στρεβλό φακό του Hollywood απεκδύονται των ιδιαίτερων πολιτισμικών τους χαρακτηριστικών για να προσαρμοστούν στην προκρούστεια κλίνη των αμερικανικών προτύπων. Η Οδύσσεια του Nolan δεν είναι παρά άλλο ένα παράδειγμα πολιτισμικού ιμπεριαλισμού.

Επειδή η ταινία προορίζεται για το αμερικανικό κοινό, διακατέχεται παντού από επεξηγήσεις για το τι συμβαίνει και σε ποιο πλαίσιο διαδραματίζονται τα γεγονότα, μία συνθήκη που την καθιστά εύπεπτη. Χαρακτηριστική είναι η ατάκα του Οδυσσέα ότι «Η Εποχή μας του Χαλκού, καταρρέει» σα να γνώριζε ότι οι ιστορικοί του μέλλοντος θα ονόμαζαν εκείνη την περίοδο ως «Εποχή του Χαλκού». Πέρα όμως από το εμφανές γελοίο, πρέπει να διακρίνουμε ότι αυτή η φράση έχει μία αυξημένη βαρύτητα για το αμερικανικό κοινό όπου αισθάνεται την αυτοκρατορία των ΗΠΑ να καταρρέει κι επομένως ταυτίζεται.

Ακόμη, η ταινία διαδίδει ένα ξεκάθαρο αντιπολεμικό μήνυμα όταν ο πόλεμος ΗΠΑ-Ιράν βρίσκεται στο αποκορύφωμά του, ο συγχρονισμός αυτών των γεγονότων πολλαπλασιάζει την επιρροή της ταινίας αν κι ενδεχομένως να προέκυψε τυχαία. Το αμερικανικό κοινό παραλληλίζεται με τους Έλληνες όπου προβάλλονται ως οι «κακοί» που αρχίζουν έναν επιθετικό πόλεμο, με αποτέλεσμα να ενεργοποιούνται συναισθήματα ενοχής αντίστοιχα με αυτά που αναπτύσσει ο πρωταγωνιστής. Η φράση «προσευχηθείτε για συγχώρεση» όπου απευθύνεται στους συντρόφους του Οδυσσέα είναι και πάλι εκτός τόπου και χρόνου καθώς η αντίληψη ότι ο θεός λυπάται και συγχωρεί τους μετανοημένους είναι χριστιανική. Και πάλι όμως αν δεν προσκολληθούμε στην ιστορική αστοχία, μπορούμε να διακρίνουμε την προσπάθεια να δημιουργηθούν σημεία ταύτισης του σύγχρονου θρησκευόμενου κοινού με τους Αχαιούς. Το συναίσθημα της ενοχής που αναδύεται στο κοινό, φανερώνει έναν λαό που έχει επίγνωση των «αμαρτιών» του κι ελπίζει ότι θα συγχωρεθεί για τα βαμμένα με αίμα χέρια του.

Συνολικά, μπορώ να διακρίνω ότι στην Οδύσσεια του Nolan υπήρξε μία τίμια προσπάθεια να αγγιχθούν ορισμένες ευαίσθητες χορδές του αμερικάνικου κοινού, ωστόσο αυτή η προσπάθεια δεν αρκεί για να σώσει την ταινία. Στον πυρήνα της βρίσκεται η πολιτισμική προπαγάνδα μίας αυτοκρατορίας που αφού σε κυριεύσει με βία (είτε φυσική, είτε οικονομική), μετά θα προσπαθήσει να σε πείσει ότι σε «ανέχεται» γιατί είναι «συμπεριληπτική». Ο δυτικός δικαιωματισμός δεν είναι παρά το ξέπλυμα ενός αιματοβαμμένου επεκτατισμού.

#8 Assorted Pacific Rim Reaction Videos – When Pacific Rim was released in cinemas worldwide in 2013, I never bothered to watch it in the local cinema. Here in the Philippines, there was a lot of pre-release buzz that Manila would appear in the movie and so many local film buffs got excited. #10 Shallow Focus is a Disease in Movies – There is a new trend that has influence the production of movies in Hollywood (AKA Commiewood) for many years now and it has literally become a disease which made the viewing of movies undesirable. The disease is shallow focus which occurs when the area of sharpness in front of a camera lens is very narrow which results in blurry backgrounds. Shallow focus is being abused in modern-day filmmaking and it is only getting worse. randomly, today i was reminded of the time (aug 28, 2012 according to jpeg metadata) my #bike was trapped in a "hot set" of a sketch being filmed for #portlandia (S3E9).

the gag was about how everything in the city was an art project and a building we had our office in was used for this fake rain scene. they wouldnt let me move my bike until shooting was done.

so i was stuck at work for a few extra hours, but we watched the shoot from our window.

Atomos, Firmware, and Fraud

A reasonable person would conclude, after looking at this Sony FX3A page on the Atomos site and reading the word “Yes,” that the “Touch to Focus” function on the Shinobi II monitor works with the Sony FX3A camera. And a reasonable person might then rely on that “Yes,” that affirmation, that assurance by the manufacturer, to make a decision. A reasonable person might decide, say, to purchase a Shinobi II monitor in order to take advantage of its Touch to Focus feature. But a reasonable person would be wrong to do so.

And wrong in a very specific way: the reasonable person would not have taken into account that the word “Yes” here means “No,” or, more precisely, “No, actually, not at the moment, but take our word for it, we’ll eventually get around to it.” That is, the Touch to Focus feature is not usable now, not with the FX3A, but the people at Atomos tell me (in the passive voice, almost as if Atomos has no say in the matter) that “the Shinobi II is expected to receive…support” for Touch to Focus “soon.”

The problem is firmware. In an email, Atomos tells me:

The Ninja RAW, Ninja TX Go, and Ninja TX running firmware version 12.5.1 have received support for camera control and touch focus tracking for several new cameras, including the Sony FX3A. This support is not implemented on Shinobi II yet.

Shinobi II is expected to receive this support in upcoming firmware soon.

What “soon” means is anyone’s guess. In mid-October of 2025, Atomos told another (presumably reasonable) person that “Touch to focus support” for the FX3A “has already been added to the feature request list for future consideration,” but at the time Atomos could offer “no official confirmation or timeline.” Nearly six months later, support still has not materialized, and Atomos is still “unable to confirm an exact date,” they tell me in another email. But “rest assured,” the “Atomos Team” adds, “the update is scheduled for release in firmware version 11.07.” The clear, positive assurance of “Yes” on which I (and other reasonable people) relied has been converted to another kind of assurance: a promise of good things to come, deferred to an upcoming release.

Maybe there are people who buy camera equipment or other tech with the expectation that they won’t be able to use it now, or won’t be able to take advantage of all its features now, but might be able to do so at some point in the future. I’m not among them. Maybe that has to do with my age, my pecuniary habits, or with how I think reasonable people should act.

In any case, it looks as if we still have a little way to go before firmware version 11.07. How long is unclear and Atomos is evasive or doesn’t want to be pinned down. The Shinobi II currently runs firmware 11.06.02, which was released on 27 January 2026. The release just before that, according to the company site, came out on 16 June 2025. So version 11.07 could come out next month or it could come out six months from now — or longer. There could be 11.06.03, .04, .05, and so on before that. So far as I can tell, there is no regularity to the releases, not even any consistency in the numbering of firmware releases published on the site (the list of releases jumps, for instance, from 11.05 to 11.06.02) — nothing, once again, to rely on.

We’ve grown accustomed to tech companies rolling out features and support over time. Cory Doctorow has written and spoken about how this process can be abusive, entrapping people and contributing to what he calls enshittification; but iterative rollouts, proprietary lock-ins, right to repair, and other issues that Doctorow focuses on are not really the issues crying out for remedy here. The more immediate issue is the blatantly misleading information on the Atomos website. Touch to Focus? “Yes.” That’s good old-fashioned fraud. It doesn’t matter, from the customer’s perspective, if the company plans one day to include that feature in a software update; a reasonable person will assume that Yes means Yes.

The law sees it that way, too, doesn’t it? Deceptive or misleading product descriptions like this one are among the Deceptive Acts or Practices covered by Federal Trade Commission Act Section 5. California state law and New York business law also have provisions covering deceptive practices and misleading statements, whether by commission or omission. (Other states do as well.) I don’t know if these laws have ever been tested against firmware releases (I should look), and I can’t say how plaintiffs would fare. Tech companies might want to take refuge in fine-print, heavily lawyered disclaimers, as Atomos does on its site, or argue that the product they are selling is both hardware and software, and that software is an iterative product, so product descriptions are really just promises companies make or break along the way. But that argument would make a mockery of the law, reinforce Doctorow’s point, and just further erode trust in tech companies.

The question is what to do about all this. Like other Atomos customers, I am a member of a misled or, as I might prefer to put it, defrauded class. That’s a fact to consider, but it doesn’t solve my immediate problem. In the near term, I need to decide whether to return this monitor or hang on to it, wait for 11.07,** and hope that this time Atomos means what it says. I’m open to suggestions.*

*PS 28 March 26: After trying some different camera setups this morning, I am leaning toward returning the Shinobi II, using my old but serviceable Feelworld F6 5.7″ monitor, and just doing without the touch focus feature on the monitor. It would be nice to have but it’s hardly essential.

**PPS 6 April 26: Atomos just released firmware update 11.07, which supports tap to focus for the Sony FX3A. With B&H closed for Passover until Friday the 10th, I haven’t yet been able to return the monitor, so I am going to update the firmware, see if and how the Touch to Focus works, and then make a decision.

PPS 11 April 26: Yesterday B&H Photo opened after its holiday recess, so I returned the monitor. The firmware update got the Touch to Focus feature working, with the camera set to flexible spot, but after playing with it a bit I decided it was not for me. It will probably work just fine for others. Anyway, the broader point about firmware, and how tech has trained us to buy and live with products that are captive to unpredictable and irregular updates of proprietary platforms, stands.
