Tell me about some of your favourite movies of the 20th century, that:
A) you have watched or rewatched ***relatively recently***;
B) still stand up / aren't super problematic from the POV of 2026 ---- and why you (still) love them!
No laundry lists, please; a short, thoughtful answer is far more helpful & more interesting.

This is exciting. Of course, I've been working on an "open movie" animation for an absurd amount of time, and even as I'm finishing up, I'm feeling burned out and have to find my bearings again. Hearing from other film and animation makers might be just the thing.

@taraprice I think #FilmMaking works nicely. Simple, straight to the point, and easy.

@taraprice I think I'm a lapsed filmmaker; last one I worked on was in 2024 (https://mastodon.social/@WTL/111964139518912896) (still in post). I do have three scripts I keep thinking about and poking at now and then that I want to get into pre-production and eventually shot. Film making is *hard* and so yet fun.

So this might be a bit unusual, but my friend Paige is raising money to help her to produce her movie, True After Dark. She calls it a love letter to Los Angeles and a cozy callback to Sleepless in Seattle. You can read all about it here: True After Dark https://seedandspark.com/fund/true-after-dark
I think Paige is on the cusp of being a real creative force in Hollywood, and I'm getting in on the ground floor. Obviously there are bigger emergencies in the world, but funding a young woman's dream is pretty good. Don't feel obliged even to click through unless this strikes your fancy.

The benefits of our film lab training program are numerous. By providing students with hands-on experience, mentorship, and networking opportunities, we’re empowering them to become the next generation of filmmakers.

You have to admit many fan made #StarWars movies recently made are far better than the average "official" star war movies.
Remember in technology when hackers and geeks with much less money and resources achieve what the big tech didn't?
The same happens in film making. Many of them are funded through #crowdfunding like many #foss softwares and #opensource hardwares are. I do wish I could financially support them.
Here is one of brilliant fan made Star Wars movies, titled "Vader: Echoes of the Jedi":

If anyone has got a YT account, please tell them to consider publishing an alternative platforms such as Torrent and #PeerTube.

Emma came to the lab as a writer and poet. Along the way, he started acting on one of the projects and now he’s one of the actors we use during our productions.

Everybody wants to be in the movies. Well, almost everybody.
In a featurette on the Criterion Blu-ray of his 1999 masterpiece "The Wind Will Carry Us," Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami asks a village bystander in a black chador to pretend to carry a bucket to the spring.
Her: "Why? I'm old and my face is not good. And I can't carry water."
Him: "The bucket is empty. You just carry it."
Her: "Use someone younger and prettier." And walks off laughing.

In an interview accompanying the Criterion Collection Blu-ray of his 1999 masterpiece "The Wind Will Carry Us," Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami (1940-2016) admits perhaps repainting the wall of a house in a hill village, or urging a rooster to stalk through a shot.
But more is too much. "Cinema today seems artificial. It looks like fabrication. As if we were killing life in order to reassemble it.
"We turn life into a kind of canned product and call it cinema."

I'm nearly done the podcast backlog from #FestivalLife, and then this morning as I'm heading out for my long ride, two *four hour* episodes from two different infrequent podcasts dropped. Thanks to @overcastfm's speed enhancements, I'm about half way done with the first of those.
And, I'd also like to draw your attention to the Team Deakins podcast (S2, E204,Janice Blackie-Goodine). If you're interested in #FilmMaking, I highly recommend this show, and specifically, this episode.

This was during the planning stage of a student short film. The director and DOP were visiting the location before the shoot.

randomly, today i was reminded of the time (aug 28, 2012 according to jpeg metadata) my #bike was trapped in a "hot set" of a sketch being filmed for #portlandia (S3E9).
the gag was about how everything in the city was an art project and a building we had our office in was used for this fake rain scene. they wouldnt let me move my bike until shooting was done.
so i was stuck at work for a few extra hours, but we watched the shoot from our window.

My short film, The T-Shirt Movie, has just premiered on my YouTube channel! It's about a washed up actor spiralling in the middle of the press junket interviews for a cynical animated movie he doesn't even remember being in.
It was the first film with a full crew and professional actors I ever directed, and it was such a blast to make. I'm excited for more people to finally get to see it. Boosts appreciated!

Edit: Just reuploaded due to an audio issue, new link above!

Every Sisi Film Lab class starts with people who simply want to learn filmmaking. By the end of the training, they've learned new skills and became part of a growing community of Ugandan filmmakers.
