There was a media day at our local #speedway yesterday and I decided to show up and do my best to pretend to be media. Had a lovely time taking #photos of #cars and people (and a few dogs). Met their social media person as well as several drivers and teams. Overall a great experience.

I was looking around the garden and noticed this interesting #Beetle on the #AppleTree. It was about the size of a #Ladybird but #IridescentBlue. I went back inside, changed the the #Lens to a #MacroLens and it was still there and so I was able to #Photograph it.

Yesterday #morning, the #Predawn #sky on the #EasternHorizon was very colourful and so I took these #photographs, with prominent #Pink, #Orange and a bit of #Grey in front of the #Blue. The #silhouettes of #trees and #buildings adds some dark contrast to the #foreground.

On the approach, there’s an old #TelephoneBox and if you look inside, there are just pictures of an old telephone and directories as they once might have looked.

The main #RailwayStation is #Totnes is on the main line from #London #Paddington to #Penzance. There’s also a minor connecting line which has a much smaller station, which is sort of like a #museum. You can get to it via a #footbridge.

What do you call this? A #flotilla? An #armada? Or simply a #QuackSquadran of #Ducks? This group of three adult males, one adult females and a dozen #ducklings was making its way happily along the #river.

Looking at the underside of the #SteelBridge, we can see that the four longitudinal #breams and braced with trusses. This is to prevent a type of instability tow which slender #structures can be susceptible. It’s called #LateralTorsionalBuckling or #LTB for short.

A bit further upstream there is a more modern #steel #ContinuousBeamBridge, which has a #concrete deck. This is obviously a twentieth century construction as steel only became a viable structural #material as the #technology improved enough to provide cheaply and reliably made.

We went for a short visit to to #Totnes, which is a small rural town in #Devon. It’s only about half an hour by #train. It is on the #RiverDart, which shares its name with places like #Dartmoor and #Dartmouth. There’s a nice walk along the #Dart and here can see an old #masonry #arch #bridge which connects the town to the other side.

Having got onto the path heading west again, it was quite easy as long as we spotted the right entrance into the forest. When I saw this sign, I knew we were on the right track since I noted on my #Map that #LeatherTorBridge was on our route.

One thing I didn’t expect to see on this trip was the #Sea! But here is the #EnglishChannel visible on the horizon, some 30 km or so away south west of the location.

There are many hazards ready to catch the unwary and unprepared on #Dartmoor, from wild ponies, to bogs, and so on. #TinMining used to be a significant industry in the area and so there are many #DisuedMines around. Most are marked on the map, like this one but some can still catch you out. Luckily, this one is fenced off and I don’t know how deep that shaft goes.
