El crochet de mi mamá y la mentira del algoritmo
Hace unos días desactivé una cuenta de Instagram.
No era mi cuenta.
Era una que había creado para mi mamá.
Se llamaba El Ganchillo de Gloria.
Durante años pensé que internet podía ayudarla a vender los tejidos en crochet que hace con sus manos. Le tomé fotografías. Diseñé publicaciones. Subí contenido. Hice lo que se supone que uno debe hacer cuando le dicen que las redes sociales son una herramienta para emprender.
No funcionó.
Y eso me obligó a aceptar algo que durante mucho tiempo no quise ver.
Instagram nunca vendió un solo tejido.
Ni uno.
Los que sí compraron fueron los vecinos.
Los amigos.
Los amigos de los amigos.
La gente que conocía a mi mamá.
La gente que había visto su trabajo en persona.
La gente real.
La Matrix no compró una mierda.
Durante años nos vendieron una historia muy seductora.
Que cualquiera podía abrir una cuenta.
Que cualquiera podía construir una audiencia.
Que cualquiera podía convertir su oficio en un negocio.
Que el algoritmo conectaría mágicamente a los creadores con los compradores.
Pero la realidad fue mucho menos romántica.
La gente da likes.
La gente comenta.
La gente comparte.
La gente dice que ama lo artesanal.
Pero cuando llega la hora de sacar la billetera, descubre que ama mucho más las cosas baratas.
Un tejido en crochet puede tomar días o semanas de trabajo.
Horas y horas de una persona sentada construyendo algo punto por punto.
Sin embargo, mucha gente ve el resultado final y calcula el precio como si hubiera aparecido por generación espontánea.
Recuerdo haber visto en París chales tejidos vendidos por cientos de euros.
No estaban vendiendo lana.
Estaban vendiendo tiempo.
Experiencia.
Paciencia.
Trabajo humano.
Aquí muchas veces la conversación empieza al revés.
No preguntan cuánto demoró hacerlo.
Preguntan cuánto descuento les van a hacer.
Y si son amigos, esperan un descuento.
Y si son amigos cercanos, esperan otro.
Y si además existe algún parentesco, amistad o historia familiar, el descuento se vuelve parte de la negociación nacional permanente.
El problema nunca fue el crochet.
El problema fue creer que Instagram era la solución.
Yo también compré esa fantasía.
Creí que estar en redes significaba vender.
Creí que la visibilidad era lo mismo que el valor.
Creí que el algoritmo podía crear clientes.
Y estaba equivocado.
Lo más extraño es que, al desactivar la cuenta, no sentí que estuviera cerrando un negocio.
Sentí que estaba enterrando una ilusión.
La ilusión de que las plataformas digitales premian automáticamente el trabajo bien hecho.
No lo hacen.
Premian muchas otras cosas.
La atención.
La repetición.
La publicidad.
La suerte.
A veces el escándalo.
A veces el humo.
Pero no necesariamente el trabajo bien hecho.
Sin embargo, hay algo hermoso en todo esto.
Porque mientras la cuenta fue incapaz de vender casi nada, los tejidos siguen existiendo.
Tengo diez cubrecamas hechos a mano por mi mamá.
Diez.
Y los amo.
Quizá Instagram desaparezca algún día.
Quizá Meta termine siendo otro fósil digital.
Quizá dentro de veinte años nadie recuerde qué era un reel.
Pero esos cubrecamas seguirán existiendo.
Seguirán contando una historia.
La de una mujer que pasó miles de horas tejiendo.
La de un hijo que creyó que internet podía ayudarla.
Y la de una lección incómoda que tardé años en aprender:
el valor de una cosa y la capacidad de venderla en redes sociales no son la misma cosa.
La cuenta fue desactivada.
La fantasía murió.
Pero los tejidos sobrevivieron.
Y, honestamente, creo que eso es lo más importante.
Operador de cámara.
Viejo.
Cansado.
Obsoleto.
Hijo de una mujer que teje mejor de lo que vende Instagram.
Amante del crochet de mamá.
Desilusionado de eso que llaman amistad.
Cansado de nadar contra la corriente.
Solo la mayor parte del tiempo.
Libre de la Matrix casi siempre.
Y cada día más lejos de la fantasía del algoritmo.
