Post 1 of 3 in my Writing as a Technology series went out on Monday.
The argument so far: we evolved to speak, but reading and writing are human made systems that have to be taught to every new generation. That makes them technology.
Next week I look at where writing ranks against every other technology we have invented. I think it comes out top.

A question I have been sitting with while writing this week's post.
How difficult did you find learning to read as a child? I found it hard, and I needed a lot of patient help to get there. Speaking, by contrast, just arrived on its own.
Does that split match your experience, or was reading something that came easily to you?

I've been doing a lot of learning in the #LocalFirst #Peer2Peer space lately for my own interest and to help architect my #Rust #PKM syncing story, and yesterday I learned about network holepunching. I had heard the term but hadn't really looked into it assuming it would be some arcane networking concept.
Nope, it's getting two peers talking to each other without a central server by simply having them both send eachother messages simultaneously, tricking NAT and firewall
Delightfully simple.

My daily note generally consists of two things:
1. I have a note called "Daily Note", which has a link to the things that are big on my plate that will be touched during the week. I update that note maybe two or three times a week, but not that often.
2. I have a perspective in OmniFocus that is generally a list of flagged tasks and tasks that have a date of today, which could be the due date, the deferred date, or any of the dates that OmniFocus uses. -

It did not take long for people to move from record keeping to storytelling.
The first known literary masterpiece came from the Mesopotamians. It is a story about a hero who uses technology, and about the harm that use does to the environment. Written around five thousand years ago, and the underlying plot would still work today.

Was digging through my personal zettelkasten today, and working through some of the topics I found with Claude. I don't have any integration yet, so I was manually copy/pasting whole docs in, and then Claude would point out something, and I'd have to manually re-read the entire document to figure out what it was referring to. Why? Because I was missing a super basic feature that I just hadn't considered in all of the work around trying to get P2P sync working (still in progress on that one).
I didn't have "Find in Document" set up at all. No button. No menu. No search. At all.
That, of course, got fixed right away. Not going to inflict a missing basic feature like that on my future users. That's not even close to how I roll.
Oh, and for those who have just heard the term "Zettelkasten" for the first time, welcome to a cool world of storing your knowledge and cross-referencing it to make novel thoughts that might not have ever existed elsewhere. I recommend starting with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zettelkasten

Mnie #Obsidian towarzyszy od niedawna i trochę przez przypadek. Uwielbiam notowanie w #Markdown (.md), a aplikacja używa go domyślnie, no i jest darmowa—dzięki @kepano .
Notatki można niezwykle prosto łączyć ze sobą [[wiki-linkami]], a zależności między nimi łatwo śledzić, w tym zwizualizowane na grafie, co bywa pomocne oraz inspirujące, gdy przegląda się najbliższe relacje i powiązane w nich informacje.
Ja używałem—przez lata—wielu rozwiązań (Google Keep, OneNote, Apple Notes, NotePlan, Craft), ale od pierwszej chwili polubiłem Obsidian i teraz wdrażam w nim zarządzanie swoimi notatkami. Poznaję również bardziej zaawansowane funkcjonalności, których w nim nie brakuje, dzięki niezliczonym wtyczkom. Myślę, że zagości u mnie na dobre.
Czy stosujecie Obsidian na swoje potrzeby?
A może macie inny ulubiony program do zarządzania notatkami i wiedzą? Za co go cenicie?

Writing was invented by accountants, not poets.
The earliest known scripts were record keeping, things like the size of a harvest. That makes sense once you see what writing actually does: it breaks the data processing limit of the human mind. Our working memory holds roughly 7 items, plus or minus 2, and it did so in Mesopotamia five thousand years ago too.

We evolved to speak. Nobody has to teach a toddler to talk. Reading and writing are different. They were invented, at least four separate times in our history, and every generation has to be taught them from scratch.
That, I think, makes reading a technology rather than an instinct.

I see a lot of setups with Obsidian and AIs where you add sources, AI processes them, creates a wiki, and you ask questions to interact with it. My dilemma is: how do you know what questions to ask if you didn’t read the ingested material?

Seit #NotebookLM verfügbar ist, habe ich es ziemlich intensiv genutzt – auch wenn die Nutzung bei mir zuletzt etwas zurückgegangen ist. Gleichzeitig wurde ich immer wieder gefragt, wie sich das Werkzeug eigentlich sinnvoll einsetzen lässt.
Daraus ist mein Guide „Gemini Notebook verstehen und nutzen“ entstanden. Er versucht nicht, für #KI zu werben, und ist weder vollständige Produktdokumentation noch Sammlung von „100 genialen Prompts“. Im Mittelpunkt stehen konkrete Arbeitsweisen mit Quellen: recherchieren, prüfen, vergleichen, lernen und Ergebnisse weiterverarbeiten.
Revision 1.0 ist jetzt als Soft-Release online, unter einer CC-BY-Lizenz und mit #mdbook publiziert. Noch ohne Screenshots und Diagramme – die kommen in einer nächsten Runde.
Mich interessiert vor allem euer kritisches Feedback: Was ist unklar, fehlt oder überzeugt nicht?

Learning to speak came to me on its own. Learning to read did not, and my Mum spent hours helping me get there.
That gap has been on my mind lately, because I think it tells us something important about what reading actually is, and why it is not quite like the other things children pick up.

@torb Ich glaube, 2nd Brain ist da die falsche Metapher, es geht ja nicht darum, jedes Neuron und jede Synapse nachzubilden (auch nicht mit AI).
Mir geht es viel mehr darum, über die Zeit wenige Artefakte immer weiter zu verbessern und verdichten, dass sie die "Essenz" des jeweiligen Themas darstellen. Den Rest könnte man löschen, hebe sie nach dem Prinzip "cool uris dont change" trotzdem auf.

Nach einem wirklich erholsamen Schlaf mit sehr wirren Träumen, die ganz offensichtlich mit der TVA zu tun haben, starten wir heute ganz entspannt in den Sonntag.
Nachdem ich gestern das von @[email protected] geteilte Video gesehen habe und diesen Artikel gelesen habe, steht meine persönliche Einstellung zu #pkm mal wieder Kopf.
Vielleicht plustern wir uns mit unserem persönlichem Wissensmanagement doch ein wenig zu dolle auf. -
Also in Pomerania, PKP PLK is hoping to have all contracts for the modernization and electrification of the northern part of the old Coal Trunk Line, Gdynia-Kościerzyna-Maksymilianowo(-Bydgoszcz), signed by mid-September. Unfortunately, the Gdynia Główna-Gdańsk Osowa suburban section will have to wait for electric trains until possibly as late as 2032, more than fifteen years after the PKM line (Gdańsk Wrzeszcz-Gdańsk Port Lotniczy-Gdańsk Osowa/Rębiechowo) opened and brought the promise of commuter rail to the Tricity's western districts: https://www.rynek-kolejowy.pl/wiadomosci/pkp-plk-komplet-umow-na-modernizacje-linii-201-do-polowy-wrzesnia-154117.html
In better news, it looks like EMUs will reach Gdańsk Osowa as early as September, and the current Gdańsk Wrzeszcz-Gdańsk Port Lotniczy-Gdynia Główna services will be split there to offer as much capacity as possible on the wired up (years ago!) voivodeship-managed line (before, only bi-mode units and a couple specially-added out-of-Takt trains from towns south of Gdańsk terminating at the airport could use the OLE). After that, Kartuzy and Somonino should get weekend services back.
