Earlier this year I wrote about prompt engineering — how to talk to AI better. I thought that was the main thing.
Since then my understanding has shifted. Context engineering — everything you give the model — matters more than the prompt itself.
My Zettelkasten in Obsidian is becoming key to this. The knowledge is there. Now it's about using it well with AI.

Tip of the day: Smart groups are a good way to view items matching specific criteria, like all the flagged #PDFs in your #DEVONthink database. While it’s easy enough to make a smart group, if you find yourself doing the same search over and over, you can use it to create a smart group in a few clicks. #pkm #productivity #tipoftheday #workflow https://www.devontechnologies.com/blog/20240102-reuse-search-devonthink-smartgroup

I recently had the opportunity to talk to at Francois Lavalee's Educated Guest community on the subject of what the enlightenment can teach us about trust in knowledge today . I've placed my notes here and pleased that one of the references about #pkm used was in the meeting @harold https://substack.com/home/post/p-197461180 I was limited in time to 15 minutes otherwise I would have expanded more but hopefully this is a good starting point

When did it click for you that prompt engineering wasn't the whole picture?
For me, it happened gradually. I noticed Claude was giving me more personalised responses over time — not because my prompts got better, but because it had more context about me and how I work.
That shift from "what should I say?" to "what does the model need to know?" changes everything.
What's your experience been? https://www.ctnet.co.uk/context-engineering-vs-prompt-engineering/

@sergio_101 Lately I've fallen into the #PKM trap of "everything must be in #Obsidian always". Which is to say, for me there's a real mixture of things I write and forget about, things I write and keep coming back to, and a huge amount that gets into the vault and I literally never interact with. I probably need to rethink some things...

Tip of the day: At some point, you have probably worked on a text and created a duplicate to save its current state. For this purpose, #DEVONthink offers document versioning. This is a backup mechanism that automatically creates versions of your document when you make edits. Here is a quick introduction to this useful feature. #backups #notetaking #pkm #productivity #safety #tipoftheday https://www.devontechnologies.com/blog/20250603-versioning-in-devonthink

I tend to just write them. I use my notes as a space for thinking and exploring. Once a task is done, I kinda move on and forget about it.
There are times when I document things I need to find later, so I spend time making them discoverable.

Question of the day - #Productivity
Do you actually re-read your notes, or mostly just write them?

A note on defaults — they matter for tools you'll use for a decade.
TagSpaces is independent, no VC, no telemetry, no mandatory account. Open source under AGPL-3.0. Tags live in plain filenames or JSON sidecar files — portable, readable by anything, decades from now.

There's a useful way to think about the prompt vs context distinction:
Prompt engineering asks: what should I say?
Context engineering asks: what should the model know? The scope, mindset and goal are completely different. Once you see it this way, the importance of building good context becomes obvious.

I spent time learning prompt engineering — how to structure asks to get better results from AI. But prompt engineering turned out to be just part of the picture.
The bigger concept is context engineering: providing the model with everything it needs to give you a useful response. System prompts, tools, background information.
New post exploring the difference: https://www.ctnet.co.uk/context-engineering-vs-prompt-engineering/

#Vim carnival submissions about #PKM.
I hoped to get more people involved, but that wasn’t the case. Perhaps the next one will be 😅.

Why start automating your PKM with boring admin tasks rather than something more exciting?
Because trust has to be earned. My AI PKM framework starts at Stage 0 — safe, reversible, administrative tasks where AI can help without touching what matters.
Updating an index is perfect for this. New post exploring both the skill and the framework it belongs to: https://www.ctnet.co.uk/claude-code-skills-obsidian-vault-index/

Tip of the day: There are several reasons to make a copy of a document, e.g., for safety, or because the document could actually belong in multiple locations in your databases. #DEVONthink and #DEVONthinkToGo support two types of copies: duplicates and replicants.

Fern release v1.3.5 is out now, bringing a few stability and bug :blobcat_googly_bug: fixes since my last ping about v1.3.0:
- desktop launchers (lmk if these dont work on your OS of choice)
- emoji render bugfix
- panics (at the disco) are handled gracefully
- errors dumped to console upon crashes for easier bug reporting

A Claude Code skill is a Markdown file that sits in your vault's .claude folder. It tells the model exactly how to approach a task — with examples, logic, and scripts it can run.
Unlike a quick chat prompt, a skill persists. Build it once, call it whenever you need it. My A-Z index skill took about 10 minutes to run last time: https://www.ctnet.co.uk/claude-code-skills-obsidian-vault-index/

Hot take: PARA is a great concept with a hierarchy problem. And for autistic and ADHD brains, that problem is not minor. It is the reason most people abandon their Notion setup entirely.
Episode 2 of the SuperBrain series covers why I replaced PARA and what I built instead: a system designed specifically for the way neurodivergent brains actually work.
