  1. A short, impactful read about the impact of the Japanese internment camps in the United States on a family. Being able to write so sunccintly yet leave such a huge impact is an underrated skill.

  2. Rice by Su Tong. I remember being entranced by the beauty of the prose, or rather, this translation. But I remember thinking that Western publishing houses will only translate novels from authors who depict China in a depressing light. Back then that's all the novels available in English from China.

    The Chinese tradition has all kinds of novels, among them adventure and mystery stories, and I wished that the West would touch more on those. It's only in recent years that they have explored unique Chinese genres like wuxia (Louis Khoo).
