  1. From my slip-box, written after a conversation with Claude: my thinking shapes the AI's response, and its response alters my thinking. A cognitive feedback loop.

The upside is a perspective other than my own. The catch is that it is roughly the human average, and research suggests work made by human and AI together is less diverse than work made by humans alone.

  6. I just spent probably 2 hours cleaning up my notes on one small subject. Letting shit go like this makes writing so-o-o-o hard because everything is just scattered all to hell & gone everywhere in and out of my slip-box.

But. Not only are my notes writing-ready now (on this topic only, alas, but hey), now I know a bit better how to do this one small part so I don't make so much chaos for the future.

  11. Started using the #Zettelkasten method for note taking, or at least some form of it. In obsidian. Flat file structure. Just links between them. Atomic notes. Feels quite freeing not having to move the files to the right folder structure at all. Let's see if I can keep up with writing notes as much as I'd like to and if, as a result, my learning and memory improves.

  12. Anne-Laure Le Cunff offers five tips for avoiding cognitive debt with AI. Keep thinking, let it challenge you, write the first draft yourself, watch for over-reliance, keep reflecting.

All reasonable. I am not convinced they are enough on their own, because none of them stop you offloading the very tasks you need to do in order to learn.

My addition is metacognition, and a Zettelkasten to practise it in: ctnet.co.uk/cognitive-debt-ai-

  14. @UnconventionalEmma Let me know how you get on with it ... I use my own lashed together ad hoc "thingy", so I'd be interested to hear of your experiences.

Note that it requires work, both to put things in, and to maintain the order. You can lapse and then recover, but it's not "effort-free".

But mine has proven to be extremely effective.

Good luck ... let me know!

  18. I ran the second quarterly analysis of my Obsidian vault this month, three months on from the first one.

2,064 permanent notes, 595 literature notes, and a processing backlog that shrank for the first time since I started measuring. Claude also flagged the concepts I keep linking to but have never written up.

Through #FOSS and (in contrast to #Markdown (3)) well designed and easily re-used clear text data format #orgdown (2, 5), I do have many possibilities to generate input for it and re-use output in other tools. Orgdown is recognized without any manual conversion in lots of tools (4).

Let me cite Dominik's tenth rule: Any sufficiently complicated #PIM or note-taking program contains an ad hoc, informally specified, bug-ridden, slow implementation of half of Org mode.

  22. Do you run periodic reviews of your notes system?

I used Claude's new Fable model for my second quarterly vault review this time, instead of Opus. It felt noticeably quicker, and it picked up on a different way I'd started working with my notes since the last review, comparing the two.

Made me realise how much giving AI proper context on your vault actually matters.

  31. Acquired Lochby Field Folio A6 (Lochby)

Keep your A6 notebooks, pens, and essentials organized on the go with the Field Folio A6. Durable, vegan waxed canvas, slim design, and flexible pockets—perfect for travel, journaling, or everyday carry.

I recently asked the kind folks at Lochby “if the Folio A6 will comfortably fit 25-50 standard 4 x 6″ index cards which are slightly larger than an A6 notebook? If not, is it something you might consider for some of us ‘Hipster PDA’ tribe members in the future?”

Erring on the side of caution their customer service replied, “Unfortunately, since the Field Folio A6 zips up, there’s no way to fit this many index cards in it without the potential for damaging them when zipping it up. But I’ll take note of your suggestion and pass it on to our product development team so we can consider it as well as gauge interest.”

Because I often use A6 sized notebooks, I couldn’t resist adding to my Lochby collection, so I went ahead and ordered it anyway.

It arrived in the post yesterday. Today I’m happy to report that it actually will accommodate 4 x 6″ index cards reasonably well.  I can comfortably fit about 30 cards into the right side pocket and still have room to tuck a Hobonichi A6 notebook into the folio and still zip it shut handily.

Because I usually have a few pre-glued decks of index card “notebooks” sitting around, I tried one of these and can happily report that the back cover/board fits into the right pocket easily (just as you’d tuck the back cover of a notebook into it) and works well with the Lochby A6 folio! (The center elastic bands are slightly smaller and fairly tight, and could work with these glued decks too, but will tend to cut the glue at the ends, so one should take care here or carefully only glue the center 5 inches of the deck for this use case.) I suspect that if one had a plastic wallet-photo type holder, it might work well in this, particularly if you’re carrying around some of your daily use cards in addition to blank cards for future use.
