  1. Probando Cockpit, el sustituto de YaST en #openSUSE Tumbleweed

Cockpit en openSUSE es el sustituto ya "de facto" de YaST a la hora de configurar diversos aspectos de nuestro sistema openSUSE

  2. We've been working on the Deploio cockpit and have some great new upgrades for you. 👀 That's right, we're not only making technical improvements, but also visual enhancements to our Swiss app engine. 🚀 We've added a tab for basic RAM and CPU metrics to the Applications section. 🔗 You can find this and all other information here: join.slack.com/t/deploiocommun 🔗 #cockpit #deploio #gui #upgrade #nine

  3. Thanks to Debian's newly founded DFSG team, cockpit-files finally made it out of the NEW queue and is now available in Debian unstable and Ubuntu's development series! 🎉

Ubuntu 22.04/24.04 LTS backports are uploaded and await review. Debian 13 backport will be uploaded in a few days after the package enters testing.

Enjoy a file browser in Cockpit!

  4. Did you know? You can find regular updates on changes to our Cockpit GUI in the Deploio Community Slack Channel. 🕹️ For example, we have added the option to give API service accounts permissions for all subprojects of an organization project. ➡️ To stay up to date, join the Slack channel right here join.slack.com/t/deploiocommun. ⬅️ #deploio #cockpit #gui #updates #nine

  6. This week's Cockpit release adds a systemd/polkit-based superuser authentication (think `run0`) as a fallback when sudo is not available/broken. It also finally removes the long-deprecated pam_cockpit_cert module.

  11. As a #Windows enthusiast since my school days, I was finally able to upgrade my aging #Dell #OptiPlex 3020M with #Fedora Server 43 a few days ago - and what can I say? Easy and quick installation, hardware was 100% supported: fantastic. Setting it up via #Cockpit is a dream. Currently, two VMs are running for #homeassistant and #plexmediaserver (also with Fedora Server 43, of course).
I'm considering upgrading my #Windows 11 Laptop to Fedora 43 as well, but I'm still hesitating because #Affinity v3 is not compatible.

Ist ein relativ einfaches serielles Protokoll, allerdings mit 3 Logikpegeln auf der Leitung.

  14. Status update 2 of 2: The mini #Debian file server is currently sprawled out all over my desk. I have one of the drives connected and running data recovery. We’ll see how things go. When I attempt to attach one of the drives to my main computer I got “unknown file system” errors.

#MDADM would not work for me to reset up the drives. Reinstalling Debian didn’t work. I tried #ARMbian and #Ubuntu to no avail.

Maybe when I made tweaks to #Cockpit I scrambled the drives?

  15. VFD segment displays in HTML/CSS for my SimPit

So I dunno if you know what a #VFD (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vacuum_fluorescent_display) is but I’m a sucker for these – at least virtually.

Games like #RebelGalaxyOutlaw perfected the look and this is where I want to go with my #Arwes HUD app for my #EliteDangerous / #X4Foundations home cockpit too.

The segment displays are heavily inspired by #AugmentedUI project (https://augmented-ui.com/) where I’ll borrow some more elements. Learned the neat fake scan lines from there too. And yes the 8 segment display works by shifting bits under the hood 🤓 This isn’t really needed for an app but I have plans to add some real segment displays eventually (I do have a whole box full with these!) so I wanted to know how to implement this anyway.

Video from an earlier stage in the development demos the scan line effect.

The bars are configured with parameters in size, count, percent, colours and thresholds 😁 I also added a random chance of 5% to shift the hue a little bit because just as in real life nothing is perfect.

And yes they are fully themed so switching the colour theme also affects the virtual VFDs.

I’m also going to replace the older horizontal bars, that look way too boring in comparison.

It’s still very early but I hope to get some rad animations going too. See https://www.hudsandguis.com/home/2022/retro-digital-dashboards to get an idea in which direction this is going 🤓

See the dedicated project page https://SimPit.dev for more details on this #Macross #VF1 inspired #cockpit panel.

  16. I'm curious to hear what others are #SelfHosting! Here's my current setup:

    Hardware & OS

    Infrastructure & Networking

    Security & Monitoring

    Authentication & Identity Management

    • Authelia (Docker): Just set this up for two-factor authentication and single sign-on. Seems to be working well so far!
    • LLDAP (Docker): Lightweight LDAP server for managing authentication. Also seems to be working pretty well!
      #AuthenticationTools #IdentityManagement

    Productivity & Personal Tools

    Notifications & Development Workflow

    • Notifications via: #Ntfy (Docker) and Zoho's ZeptoMail (#Zoho)
    • Development Environment: Mostly using VSCode connected to my server via Remote-SSH extension. #VSCodeRemote

    Accessibility Focus ♿️🖥️

Accessibility heavily influences my choices—I use a screen reader full-time (#ScreenReader), so I prioritize services usable without sight (#InclusiveDesign#DigitalAccessibility). Always open to discussing accessibility experiences or recommendations!

    I've also experimented with:

    • Ollama (#Ollama): Not enough RAM on my Pi.
    • Habit trackers like Beaver Habit Tracker (#HabitTracking): Accessibility issues made it unusable for me.

I don't really have a media collection, so no Plex or Jellyfin here (#MediaServer)—but I'm always open to suggestions! I've gotten a bit addicted to exploring new self-hosted services! 😄

What's your setup like? Any cool services you'd recommend I try?

  23. Building your own NAS/homelab machine is neverending process.

I started with a plain external drive ~15 years ago, then connected it via USB to PC Engines Alix, then moved to two-bay Synology NAS, then built my first small and passive mini-ITX machine (sporting Athlon 200GE) with 4 drives and yesterday, I rebuilt it with Ryzen 5600G, 3x12TB drives in RAID5, 1TB NVMe in PCI-E for VMs, 512GB NVMe for system and containers, 64 GB RAM...

Everything encrypted, services running in podman containers, a few VMs will come... it will be a long configuration weekend, learning new stuff again 😻

Can't believe I used to run services directly as root and even used samba and other messy stuff.

BTW, #cockpit in Fedora Server rocks! I tried to use it ~2 years ago and it was not a pleasant experience, but now, I did most of the stuff there instead of command line.

Also am interested in #stratis - not for this server, but for another one. Looks like a nice umbrella storage system for my 10+ spare HDDs and SSDs with different sizes which I want to use to spin-up a pure backup server one day, if I find a reasonable motherboard for it with enough SATA ports... (see https://stratis-storage.github.io/ for details - thanks @shine for mentioning it to me)
