Choices, choices... What commedia dell'arte shall we bring to Pennsic 53 this July and August?
We love our scheming characters - which is why we go double in "The Witch & the Widow's Web", a farce from our second #Inktober challenge where both Pasquella's plan (to fake Isabella's madness) and Vittoria's plot (to feed her husband to a lion) complicate each other combined with a conman magician (with a fake monster)! Will the tricks be revealed this summer at Pennsic?
Follow and check back often for updates! But whatever our final selection is, you can come laugh at us on:
➤ Peace Thursday (July 30) • 6:00pm • Amphitheatre
➤ Middle Saturday (August 1) • 9:00pm • PA Tent
➤ War Wednesday (August 5) • 6:00pm • Amphitheatre#CommediaDellArte #Commedia #Improv #Improvisation #Theater #Comedy #Mask #Pennsic #PennsicWar #SCA #SocietyForCreativeAnachronism #MySCA

FRED FRITH, TIM HODGKINSON & LIZ ALBEE (US/UK/DE) + LUKRAAK (Marcus Wärnheim & Thomas Jaspers)
OCCII, Tuesday, October 20 at 08:30 PM GMT+2
A night of Total Music #2:: FRED FRITH, TIM HODGKINSON & LIZ ALBEE (US/UK/DE) + LUKRAAK (Marcus Wärnheim & Thomas Jaspers)
– a dazzling celebration of the unexpected – contemplative and ecstatic, unruly and gloriously alive –
FRED FRITH + TIM HODGKINSON + LIZ ALBEE (US/UK/DE)
A meeting of three outstanding improvisational musicians who understand sound as an open territory. Guitar legend Fred Frith – co-founder of Henry Cow and a defining figure in experimental music since the 1970s – encounters Tim Hodgkinson, a comrade from those radical early days and an tireless explorer of improvisation, composition, and sound anthropology. Joining them is Liz Allbee, a Berlin-based trumpeter and sound artist who transforms her instrument into a vibrating resonant body of breath, electronics, and material experimentation. A fully improvised trialogue – raw, poetic, and unpredictable. The combination of Frith‘s prepared guitar/string work, Hodgkinson‘s intense reed work/composition, and Albee‘s trumpet/electronics represents a high-level intersection of veteran avant-garde and experimental improvisation.
Multi-instrumentalist, composer, and improviser Fred Frith has been making noise of one kind or another for more than 50 years, starting with the rock collective Henry Cow, which he co-founded with Tim Hodgkinson in 1968.
Fred is best known as a pioneering electric guitarist and improviser, song-writer, and composer for film, dance and theater. Through bands like Art Bears, Massacre, Skeleton Crew, the Fred Frith Guitar Quartet, Cosa Brava, and now Fremakajo he has stayed close to his roots in rock and folk music while branching out in many other directions.
Fred has performed works by and sometimes alongside composers Alvin Curran, Meredith Monk, Pauline Oliveros, Terry Riley, and Christian Wolff; improvised with Lotte Anker, Derek Bailey, Han Bennink, Peter Brötzmann, Lol Coxhill, Janet Feder, gabby fluke-mogul, Tim Hodgkinson, Joëlle Léandre, Phil Minton, Ikue Mori, Butch Morris, Bob Ostertag, Evan Parker, Zeena Parkins, Paula Sanchez, Susana Santos Silva and Camel Zekri, to name a few; and—as session musician—recorded on albums by, for example, Brian Eno, The Residents, Robert Wyatt, The Swans, Violent Femmes, Material, Negativland, John Zorn, Matthew and the Unfortunates, and Half Japanese.
https://www.fredfrith.com/live/Tim Hodgkinson (b. 1949) studied social anthropology at Cambridge, and co-founded the politically and musically radical group HENRY COW with Fred Frith in 1968. In addition to composing, he has a long involvement in improvisation, and came back to anthropology in the 1990’s with research into music and shamanism in Siberia.
As an improvising musician on reeds and lap steel guitar Tim Hodgkinson has performed all over the world with many of the most acclaimed artists in the field, and continues to be fully engaged in the celebrated Konk Pack trio with Roger Turner and Thomas Lehn. In 2009 he released KLARNT – a CD of solo clarinet improvisations.
http://www.timhodgkinson.co.uk/Liz Allbee is a trumpet player who doesn’t play the trumpet all that often. Or at least, not the regular one. Instead, she frequently opts for a quadrophonic trumpet of her own design, as well as her voice and a myriad of self-made objects. The case in point is her recent album Breath Vessels, made using various glasses, pots and dismantled second-hand instruments which produce a surprisingly melodious drone.
Often radical, Allbee is also an economic composer and improviser: prudent layering of loops provides a smooth passage towards trance. An uneasy one – since Allbee’s inspiration comes from recent events like the sinking of the ship Adriana with hundreds of migrants on board in 2023, or from a withering observation the problems of our planet started when humans evolved opposable thumbs. A consoling one – since her work is conceived as new folk music, driven not by nostalgia but by a sense of community.
https://lizallbee.net/LUKRAAK
Lukraak plays post-silly music of crooked beauty. Using alto saxophone, drums, flutes, found objects as well as their own centered bodies and flying limbs, they produce something of their own with a haphazard attitude. Intricate sonic mosaics and vivid tapestries of complex sound masses are created along the edges of experimental jazz and neo-neo-dada-dada.Lukraak has previously performed at Porta-Jazz Festival and Valkhof Festival, as well as at venues in the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, France, Poland and the Baltics. They are individually and collectively active members of the vibrant experimental music scene of Amsterdam, and together with Jaap Blonk they perform as Luk&BlonkRaak. On 26th of September 2025 their debut album ‘Zaalig’ was released on LukRecords.

Queer Cinema for Palestine x Ventilator Cinema
OT301, Saturday, June 6 at 05:00 PM GMT+2
Line up: Mama Ganuush, Teodor Vladár, Dua Omari, Huss, R.R. John Greyson
Open: 17:00 - 20:00 hrs
Tickets: € 0No Pride in Genocide
This Pride month of June will, Queer Cinema for Palestine (QCP) and Ventilator Cinema come together in Amsterdam for No Pride in Genocide — part of QCP’s fourth annual global film program uniting grassroots, solidarity, and arts organizations worldwide through collectively curated short films.
Queer Cinema for Palestine began as an ethical alternative to the Israeli state-sponsored TLVFest LGBTQ Film Festival, following the Palestinian call for the academic and cultural boycott of Israel. Over the past years, hundreds of filmmakers and artists have joined in solidarity with queer and trans Palestinians resisting occupation, pinkwashing, censorship, and colonial violence.
This year’s program brings together queer, Palestinian, and allied artists across genres, geographies, and cinematic forms — highlighting the role of art in resistance, memory, and liberation.
In light of Israel’s ongoing genocide and ethnic cleansing across Gaza, the West Bank, and historic Palestine, we stand in solidarity with Palestinians and reject the instrumentalization of queer and trans identities to justify violence and oppression.
The program will be introduced by Nadia Slimi
BDS representative Nadia Slimi is committed to intersectional activism and social justice. Alongside her work within BDS, she advocates for justice for people, animals, and the environment in both her professional and personal life. With a background in management, Nadia recently returned from six months of volunteer work in South America, where she contributed to grassroots community initiatives.
Schedule
▫️ 17:00 — Doors
▪️ 17:30 — Short Film Program
▪️ 19:30 — Drinks & MusicFilm Program
A Message, Mama Ganuush, 2:51 min, Palestine (2026)
Audio: English
Subitles: EnglishA short documentary film capturing the queer Palestinian voices in exile.
Mama Ganuush is a trans Palestinian performance artist, filmmaker, organizer, and activist whose work is a potent and unflinching expression of Palestinian futurism. Based between San Francisco and Lisbon, their performances are a powerful synthesis of Palestinian folk art and music, the elegance of Egyptian golden-era dance, and the raw, spontaneous energy of clown and theater.
Ceasefire بِكَفِّي قَهْـر , Teodor Vladár, 23 min, Slovakia/Hungary (2025)
Audio: English, Arabic, Slovak
Subitles: English, SlovakNawras, a Jordanian-Palestinian queer artist, has been living in Slovakia, Bratislava for the past four years. Living within two communities and clashing cultures, she is pushed towards a third goal; to find peace and a place she can call home. Now, she is reclaiming the culture she was born into, this time, as she chooses to define it, and in doing so, creating a community which becomes her family.
Teodor Vladár is 21 years old and currently studying at the Academy of performing arts in Bratislava, Slovakia. He has studied in Spain and France, the latter being film studies in Paris. He is involved in queer and pro-Palestinian activism and wants to give voices to people by creating documentaries. He is a writer and a screenwriter as well, having won multiple short story competitions in Slovakia. He is also the host of a podcast “Nami o nás”, which focuses on queer identities in world filmography. “Ceasefire” is his directing debut, which he has created with the financial help of a crowdfunding campaign.
The 5-Year Plan for Financial Independence, Dua Omari, 7 min, Palestine (2025)
Audio: English
Subitles: EnglishThis video reflects on Palestine’s history as a repeating cycle of injustice, imagining a future where the system remains unchanged and violence continues. It exposes the failure of the global system to deliver real justice, offering only symbolic solutions that do not improve daily life. Palestinians are forced to adapt to conditions below basic human dignity, kept in a state of false hope with no clear path to freedom or dignity.
Dua Omari is a visual artist from Jerusalem working across video and painting. She holds degrees in Psychology and Contemporary Visual Arts from Birzeit University. Her practice explores the intersection between the individual psyche and the political and social reality, with a focus on psychological and lived experiences under systems of oppression, particularly those of women, children, and Palestinian society under occupation. She has participated in local and international exhibitions and has completed artist residencies at the Spanish Academy in Rome and the A. M. Qattan Foundation.
Until We Return, Huss AC, 11 min, Egypt/Scotland (2025)
Audio: English
Subitles: EnglishUntil We Return drifts between memory and dream, moving from the flicker of a sixth birthday on VHS to the final unknowing farewell of a vanished home. Unfolding like a passage along the Nile, through dreamlike currents of Cairo where memory and presence blur, part vision, part yearning, part possibility. Upon its waters, a fragile utopia awakens, a world where separation never came to be, where return is still within reach, and the home once lost flows back into being.
Huss is an Arab multidisciplinary artist, performer, filmmaker, and film programmer based in Glasgow. His work explores queerness, memory, and exile, weaving personal and political narratives that confront displacement, censorship, and survival. Moving across film, performance, installation, and sound, his practice creates space for fragmented histories and silenced voices, challenging dominant narratives around Arab and diasporic experience.
We Will Haunt Your Archive, R.R., 10 min, United States (2026)
Audio: English
Subitles: NoneDecember 2, 2023. A queer protest erupts in San Francisco in solidarity with Palestine. The film situates this action within the longer history of ACT UP’s activism during the AIDS crisis. It explores glitch as a radical feminist tactic for resisting contemporary regimes of surveillance and silencing.
R.R. is a filmmaker, scholar, and multimedia journalist. He has worked as a journalist for international publications such as The Los Angeles Times and broadcast outlets including CNN and Al Jazeera Documentary Channel. His award-winning films have screened at international film festivals and venues such as IDFA, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley.
Sorry, John Greyson, 7 min, Canada (2024)
Audio: English
Subitles: EnglishA portrait of three young women: Luna Alyaan, a young Gaza violinist, killed by an Elbit drone; Eden Golan, a Zionist singer who represented Israel at 2024’s Eurovision in Malmo; and Greta Thunberg, who lead protests at Eurovision that year. A dark satire of Israel’s weaponization of song for hasbara (propaganda) purposes, Sorry uses humour and pop culture to create a mash-up agit-prop in support of the ongoing Eurovision boycott and the Dump Elbit campaign. (Inspired by Toronto Palestine Film Festival’s Gaza Lives tribute to artists lost in the genocide).
John Greyson is an award-winning queer Toronto video/film artist, whose features, shorts and transmedia works include: Unauthorized Amplification Devices (2026), Gauze (2025), Door Prize (2025), Death Mask (2024), Photo Booth (2023), International Dawn Chorus Day (2020), Mercurial (2018), Gazonto (2016), Murder in Passing (2013), Fig Trees (2009), Proteus (2003), Lilies (1996), Zero Patience (1993), The Making of Monsters (1991) and Urinal (1989).

19:00 – 20:00 — Conversation with the audienceThe evening will open with a live musical performance by Palestinian musician, composer, and researcher Maya al-Khaldi, whose work experiments with Palestinian musical heritage, sound archives, and lost performance traditions to imagine a decolonial future.
Soraya El Kahlaoui, researcher based in Palestine, will present her ongoing work on the narratives of dispossession between Morocco and Palestine through video testimonies and life histories, reflecting on visual storytelling as a method for amplifying marginalized voices and documenting experiences of loss, displacement, and resistance.
Palestinian playwright and researcher Dia Barghouti will then present her work on Palestinian theatre, exploring how experimentation with extinct Palestinian traditions and Sufi rituals can create new opportunities for artistic innovation and resistance to the Israeli occupation.

Bringing together research, music, film, and performance, the event reflects on how creative practices can become tools for documenting dispossession, imagining resistance, and reclaiming collective histories.

The event will conclude with an open discussion with the audience, creating space for collective reflection on decolonial knowledge production, artistic practice, and the politics of representation. Moderated by Khadija El Mourabit.
