  1. I saw this DEC InfoServer 1000 and my mind went instantly to "classy as shit Greaseweazle omni-enclosure." No budget for that kind of thing at the moment, sadly!

  5. I love the old school #Unix desktop environments. It goes hand in hand with the server grade hardware I could never afford, and just oozes industrial quality. Think heavy and intimidating #beige workstations by #HP, #DEC and #Sun with the power consumption of a regular house hold and metal cooling fans that could slice fingers.

Back in the day, #FVWM2 had some of the same vibe. Also, the original Common Desktop Environment (#CDE), created by some of the major vendors of Unix-like systems created back in the day is still available (sourceforge.net/projects/cdesk). If you're used to a modern desktop, it could be a rough experience for daily use though.

Honestly, I'm quite happy with #KDE #Plasma, and would be thrilled by just the visuals. I'm sure you know where I'm going with this, so without further jibberjabber, I give you: The CDE Plasma Theme! It's delicious! :D

  7. After reviewing the documents, I can say that their work is exceptional in its brevity. I toiled for two hours to positively confirm which sections are relevant for the USA model and which are not, and there is exactly one path through the docs which would indicate that.

I am exhausted: from reading. Gawd dang, #DEC, you made quite the work all those years ago.

  9. I'm fortunate enough to have been born in a period where the internet did not exist. So I saw everything from the beginning as it was being set up in my section of Terra. The internet was such a peaceful place; we could transmit UID PASS information in ASCII text!

In the period I was born, the smart network people were not even talking about milnet / arpanet

I'm one of the three persons who is also fortunate enough to build the architecture of the internet in my country of SR SA. At that point in time our phone company had high level Engineers who did not even know the difference between an IP address and a physical House address, let alone know how to ask through Archie.ans.net what a specific RFC is and how it should be downloaded with [email protected].

None of them could speak Hayes commands like ATX3DT ATA

  11. Ah yes, because running a 23-year-old OS on an extinct processor architecture is exactly what the world needs right now. 🤦‍♂️ Welcome to the cutting edge of #retrocomputing, where the only thing older than the software is the dust on your #DEC #Alpha. 🎉🔧

Catch of the Day: A Dinosaur on the Web – OpenVMS on a VAXstation! 🦖

    Hey Retro Fans!

When we think of retro computing, most of us picture a beige tower PC, a C64, or an Amiga. But yesterday, our bouncer welcomed a true heavyweight from the depths of professional IT history:

    VMS_Mosaic 4.0 on OpenVMS V7.3 (VAXstation 4000-VLC)!

Let that user agent sink in for a moment. DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation) was once a giant of the computer industry. Their VAX architecture and the accompanying OpenVMS operating system are absolute legends, famous for a level of stability that modern systems can often only dream of.

The VAXstation 4000-VLC ("Very Low Cost") hit the market in the very early 90s—a compact UNIX/VMS machine for professional use. The fact that someone in 2026 fires up this machine, launches the graphical Motif interface, and browses FrogFind using the native VMS_Mosaic browser is absolutely mind-blowing. It proves once again: With the right bridge (and FrogFind!), no architecture is too old for the internet.

A reverent toast to indestructible DEC hardware!

    From Paul McJones on LinkedIn:

Most people are familiar with Niklaus Wirth's sequence of languages [EULER, PL360, Algol W,] Pascal, [Modula,] Modula-2, Oberon. But a parallel sequence, designed at and System Research Center, is not so well known: MPL, Mesa, Cedar, Modula-2+, Modula-3. I … decided to capture as much of the history as possible of these "shadow" languages:
    MPL/Mesa/Cedar: lnkd.in/gnUa6WU6
    Modula-2+: lnkd.in/gnuqCrxV
    Modula-3: lnkd.in/g5iwK5jD

  26. Occasionally I work on my PDP11/70 emulator (toy-project, in my spare time). The latest version can run BSD 2.11 multi-user on an ESP32-S3. Even though I wrote the emulator myself, I'm still amazed about the physical reduction in size. On the left in the picture below you see the original device (the thing in the 19" rack with all the lights and switches), on the right you see the ESP32: smaller than my hand!
