Oxford Shuts Down Elon Musk-Funded Institute Led by Controversial Philosopher Nick Bostrom: 'Death by Bureaucracy'
    "
"The closure is a setback for the effective altruism and longtermism movements, which Bostrom has advocated for decades, but have recently faced scandals related to racism, sexual, and financial fraud."

  3. results of the consultation on the local reorganisation proposal for #Oxford shire: Just over 50% against each of the proposals, just over 30% in favour. So I guess people who took part would like to keep the existing arrangement, which wasn't one of the options ... assets.publishing.service.gov.

  8. 15 Sculptures You (probably) Didn’t Know Existed

A fork in a lake. A shark in a roof. A portrait hidden inside fifty steel columns. These sixteen sculptures use cliffs, shadows, water, buildings, light, and even the viewer’s position as part of the work. Some are permanent landmarks; others travel or were created as temporary installations. 🎶 “Mélodie oubliée” — By Luo Li Rong In this workshop photo, Luo Li Rong uses a torch on the bronze surface of Mélodie oubliée. The finished work is 205 cm tall and weighs 250 kg, […]

  11. Hype for the Future 229A: Greater Cincinnati, Ohio

Introduction Greater Cincinnati is largely associated with a tristate area of Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana, with numerous counties in the southwestern portion of Ohio and Northern Kentucky largely associated with the region. The most notable counties of the region in question include the Ohio counties of Hamilton, Clermont, Butler, and Warren; the Kentucky counties of Boone, Kenton, and Campbell; and Dearborn County, Indiana. Notable communities in the region include Cincinnati, Hamilton, […]

  13. #OMN Grounding (the roots as a story)

#techchurn is the endless cycle of adopting new platforms, tools, and technologies - not because they solve any real problems, but because novelty is mistaken for progress. It burns community trust, institutional memory, and activist energy, while leaving the underlying #nastyfew power structures untouched.https://hamishcampbell.com/?s=techchurn The #OMN uses #stupidindividualism to describe the culturally manufactured habit of prioritising personal gain and self-interest over collective […]

  14. I rather strongly feel that I live in #Oxford #city and not in the #shire. If the county's model of a unitary authority at shire level goes through (ie we lose all political representation at city level!), I'll just have to join the resistance ... Also stupid because there is no reasonable transport connecting us with the shire - parts of it are a lot harder to reach than London. Conversely, if shire folks want to visit Oxford, they typically rely on their cars, causing all that congestion.

  15. Disciplined curiosity beats IQ, Oxford

There is a persistent myth pushed in our culture that intelligence - high IQ, academic credentials, elitist education - leads naturally to clear thinking. My organic experience suggests the opposite, what matters is disciplined, skeptical, freethinking curiosity. Without that, intelligence simply becomes a tool for defending whatever assumptions people already hold. This is one of the reasons many academic environments produce people who are, bluntly, credulous. Not because they lack […]

(ARD)

  18. #obituary of legendary #oxford #saxophone shop owner. I bought two new flutes from him back in the days (before I got into the habit of rescuing battered old instruments). The trouble with losing his shop #Allegro a few years ago is that now we have no #woodwind repair shop locally. oxfordmail.co.uk/news/25322069

  19. A vibrant youth-led exhibition was unveiled at Oxford Parkway Station on 27 March, featuring five art displays created by local young people. The "Moving Murals" project, a collaboration between #Oxfordshire Community Rail Partnership (OxCRP), #Chiltern #Railways, and community artists, aimed to celebrate local communities and explore themes of place and identity. Young people from #Oxford and #Banbury developed skills through workshops, producing lino prints, collages, and signs that were transformed into full-scale murals. Supported by Chiltern Railways' Community Investment Fund, the exhibition enriches the travel experience by reflecting the area's culture. The event celebrated the creative achievements of the participants, showcasing their talent and the power of art to connect communities. Zach Bailey of Chiltern Railways praised the project for enhancing Oxford Parkway while highlighting the area's unique stories.
