  1. Artist to Artist: Ali Chahrour

Felix Meritis, Saturday, June 13 at 03:30 PM GMT+2

Diana Al-Halabi & ghenwa abou fayad

How do you continue working when the reality of war finds itself next to your rehearsal space? What is it like to create art amidst destructive forces? And how does the current situation in Lebanon influence the work of Lebanese artists in The Netherlands? During this Artist to Artist, a collaboration between Felix Meritis and Holland Festival, three Lebanese artists discuss these questions and the importance of sharing stories that often remain in the background.

Lebanese artist Ali Chahrour is part of Holland Festival with his multidisciplinary dance performance When I Saw the Sea. In his work, he connects personal and collective stories with themes such as love and war. During this Artist to Artist he will be joined in conversation by cross-disciplinary artists Diana Al-Halabi and ghenwa abou fayad.

    Line-up

    Ali Chahrour

Dancer and choreographer Ali Chahrour (Beirut, 1989) has developed a unique movement language that breaks away from Western codes and models. This language reflects his cultural background and the political, social, and religious context in which he works. In an earlier series of performances, part of his “Death” trilogy, he brought funeral rituals to life, combining tradition with a sharp sense of modernity. He later began a new series centered on the theme of “love,” including Told by My Mother, which was presented at Holland Festival in 2025.

Chahrour’s work is characterized by a combination of lyrical poetry and intensely intertwined bodies. His performances have been presented at the Festival d’Avignon (2016, 2018, and 2022) as well as at numerous other festivals worldwide.

    Diana Al-Halabi

Born in Lebanon in 1990, Diana Al-Halabi is a Rotterdam–Beirut–based interdisciplinary artist working primarily with film and painting. Through an intersectional feminist lens, her practice navigates the entanglement of the personal and the political, challenging top-down structures of power — from the patriarchal gaze and institutional violence to bureaucracy, settler colonialism, migration, and visa regimes. Her recent research, “Famine and Hunger Strikes: Decolonizing the Digestive System,” explores the politicization of the digestive system as a form of bottom-up resistance.

Al-Halabi’s work spans film and painting, with her 2022 film, “The Disaster Cannot Be Contained,” screening at international festivals, including IFFR, and winning Best Short Film in the national competition at the Beirut Shorts International Film Festival. In 2023, she received the IFFR RTM PITCH Award for her short film “The Battle of Empty Stomachs,” which premiered at IFFR 2024, Raindance Film Festival (UK), and Blackstar Film Festival (USA).

    ghenwa (noiré) abou fayad

ghenwa (noiré) abou fayad is a Lebanese cross-disciplinary artist, performer, and installation practitioner. Their work explores the politics of language, oral history, and repetition through sound, storytelling, and improvisation. Using an electro-acoustic setup, ghenwa plays the bouzouqi, sings, and plays the synths to weave together socio-political narratives, memory, and everyday survival, often treating performance as a living archive shaped by embodied experience.

Their practice extends into collaborative and pedagogical formats, including projects such as Hacked Orchestra which she initiated then collaborated on with Hackers & Designers (2024) – which , a collaboration with Hackers and Designers culminating in a sonic presentation at the Muziekgebouw, they facilitated the Insurgent Learning Workshop (2024), and later co-lead Voice as Legacy: Tracing the Unwritten (Sonic Acts x SALWA Foundation, 2025).

Their ongoing sound research uses a dactylo (Arabic typewriter) as an instrument, investigating the gendered history of typing as feminized labor and its sonic potential. At the moment, ghenwa is working on producing their first debut EP entitled ‘daken – sombre’.

  3. Red Light Jazz: dinner concert with Bout du Monde

Contra, Sunday, June 7 at 08:00 PM GMT+2

Explanation dinner concert: Inspired by legendary jazz clubs like the Blue Note in New York and Ronnie Scotts in London, Contra is now the one and only place in Amsterdam where you can combine mesmerising live music with a haute cuisine dining experience. A dinner ticket comes together with a menu for a set price that will be shared later on, there is also a small amount of tickets available without dinner. The concert will take roughly 2 hours and consist of 3 or 4 short sets with each 15-20 minute breaks in between. The breaks are for the audience to enjoy each others company, the sets are to listen to the music and don’t disturb the concert. Doubting on when to have dinner at Contra? Realize that dinner concerts are a concert in the 1st place. If necessary our staff can and will ask people to be attentive of the musicians and the other visitors that are there to enjoy the music.

    Bout du Monde [ENGLISH below]

Ontstaan in België-Wallonië aan het “Einde van de Wereld” is Bout du Monde een kwartet bestaande uit vier gerenommeerde Nederlandse muzikanten:

    Robert Mollee – saxen
    Joris Nederpelt Lazarom – piano/synth
    Rob IJsendijk – basgitaar
    Aad Faasse – drums

Bout du Monde is echter hun eigen project. Hun eerste album genaamd ‘Hirondelle’ kwam uit in mei 2020, het tweede album ‘Uncovered’ verscheen in 2022. Het derde album wordt verwacht in 2026.

Formed in Wallonia, Belgium, at the “End of the World”, Bout du Monde is a quartet comprising four renowned Dutch musicians:

    Robert Mollee         – saxophones
    Joris Nederpelt Lazarom     – piano/synth
    Rob IJsendijk         – bass guitar
    Aad Faasse             – drums

Robert Mollee (saxophone) has an impressive track record. He has performed with Denise Jannah, Thijs van Leer, Tim Knol, Fay Claassen and others. Joris Nederpelt Lazarom studied piano at the Royal Conservatoire, has played with various large and smaller orchestras both at home and abroad, and is a producer at his own label, 12notes.nl. Rob IJsendijk began his bass career in pop music and, via Berklee College of Music among others, soon found his way into jazz, playing with countless different musicians. Drummer Aad Faasse graduated from the Hilversum Conservatory and has worked with, amongst others, singer Deborah Brown. He has developed his own style with explosive touches.

These four musicians challenge one another anew at every concert, pushing their musical boundaries. They know each other from various ensembles and have already played together extensively in different combinations. They have also appeared annually at previous editions of Red Light Jazz. Bout du Monde, however, is their own project. Their first album, entitled ‘Hirondelle’, was released in May 2020, and their second album, ‘Uncovered’, appeared in 2022. The third album is expected in 2026.

  9. Ego and Chaos in My Upcoming Hilarious Concert

I am thrilled to announce that I will be performing in an upcoming concert organized by Source/Filter Music on Saturday, May 30th at 8pm!

This isn’t your typical, buttoned-up classical performance. This time around, we are diving into something wonderfully witty and theatrical: Domenico Cimarosa’s brilliant short comic opera, The Maestro (originally Il maestro di cappella)! If you want to laugh with a bunch of musicians playfully mocking the music business—this is the show for you. 🤣

The Maestro is a parody of ego and rehearsal chaos. This comic intermezzo lampoons a self-important conductor who can’t stop talking long enough to rehearse. Performed in a lively new English translation by Britta Sterling (with a dash of Italian), baritone/conductor Caleb Yanez Glickman takes on the rare challenge of conducting and starring as the flustered Maestro.

The beauty of this production is its intimacy and spontaneity: it’s performed with minimal staging and without microphones. As the musicians sit and play, we have to respond to his every ridiculous whim in real-time. It’s a total breakdown of the traditional conductor-orchestra relationship, and it was an absolute blast to rehearse it yesterday!

Adding to the spirit of chaos and spontaneity, I discovered at rehearsal that I’ll be taking over the Concertmaster chair—which includes a couple of flashy solos as well as helping to keep the orchestra from completely revolting against the “Maestro”!

Tickets are officially live! You can find all the event details and grab your seats directly through the box office page here.

Mark your calendars for May 30th, 8pm, at the Sierra Madre Playhouse!

  14. As the cello and the bass compete to bring the flutter and grounding of the scene, the oboe and tuba begin the march of rhythm, slowly the flute viola and piano bring a bounce into the work like a fresh breeze on a summer's day, then with triumph and majesty the trumpets roar to life bringing the entire horn section to the party, the drums begin to roll like the thunder in the distance, as they get closer the cymbals bells and guitars lift you to your feet just as the xylophones and bassones wake the trombones and saxophones, a lone voice begins to sing then sudden calm of silence and then an entire chorus and orchestra springs to life with the force of a billion stars, transporting you into a cosmic journey as their harmonious rhythm embraces your soul; I am not sure of where this goes but I can hear it in my soul;
