    David Lynch

    A Straight Story

    (1999)

The Straight Story is often described as David Lynch’s most normal film, but that can be misleading. It may lack the surreal imagery and narrative puzzles that define much of his work, yet it is unmistakably a Lynch film in its attention to silence, landscape and the quiet mysteries of ordinary life.

Based on the true story of Alvin Straight, an elderly man who drives his lawn mower across several states to reconcile with his estranged brother, the film unfolds at the pace of its protagonist. Lynch never rushes the journey or inflates its emotions. Instead, he finds drama in small encounters; with strangers, memories and the passing American landscape. These moments gradually accumulate into something unexpectedly profound.

Rather than feeling like an exception within Lynch’s body of work, The Straight Story reveals another side of the same filmmaker: one equally fascinated by human vulnerability, only this time without the shadows. It is one of the warmest and most compassionate films he ever made, and a reminder that profound cinema doesn’t always need to raise its voice.

This film is chosen by Maaike

    19-8

    Maren Ade

    EVERYONE ELSE

    (2009)

An alternately loving and feuding couple, together for an unknown period of time, are on vacation on Sardinia: he, Chris, a struggling, perhaps visionary architect (Lars Eidinger); she, Gitti, a music publicist (Birgit Minichmayr, winner of a Silver Bear at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival).

As long as they exist in an hermetic sphere of their own creation, they are comfortable in their bodies, but persist in subtle role-playing that can only harm their relationship. Theirs is a uniquely defined interaction where Chris is the more “feminine” partner—performing a decidedly unmacho dance to Willie Nelson and Julio Iglesias’ ‘80s classic “To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before” under Gitti’s gaze and the feminine gaze of the camera.

Aided by actors who are fearless in exploring their own bodies and minds, Maren Ade transforms what should be a familiar story into an emotional tour de force, and at the same time creates what might be considered to be a definitive generational portrait.

This film is chosen by Merthe

    26-8

    Denis Villeneuve

    INCENDIES

    2010

Incendies is the film that announced Denis Villeneuve as a major filmmaker long before Arrival or Dune.

Adapted from Wajdi Mouawad’s play, it follows a pair of Canadian twins who travel to an unnamed Middle Eastern country after their mother’s death, slowly uncovering the story she spent her life trying to bury. The mystery is gripping, but the film’s real achievement lies in how it transforms a detective story into a tragedy.

It's one of the strongest anti-war films of the 21st century, not because it argues against war, but because it shows how its consequences outlive every ceasefire. It is a film about memory, inheritance, and the unbearable cost of discovering where you come from. Few films leave such a profound emotional mark while remaining so formally controlled.

    Les Blank

    Burden of Dreams

    (1982)

Burden of Dreams is one of the rare making-of documentaries that completely transcends its original purpose.

On paper it follows Werner Herzog during the disastrous production of Fitzcarraldo; in practice it becomes a film about obsession itself. Les Blank’s camera never sensationalizes the chaos, nor does it try to explain Herzog away. It simply observes a director whose artistic conviction pushes everyone- including himself- to the edge of what seems reasonable.

Yet Burden of Dreams is never merely about filmmaking. It is about the peculiar relationship between ambition and madness, and about the strange places people are willing to go in pursuit of an idea that refuses to let them go. Blank’s calm, unembellished approach gives the film its power: instead of judging Herzog, he lets the contradictions speak for themselves.

Herzog comes across as visionary, reckless, inspiring and deeply frustrating, often within the same scene. The famous image of hauling a full-sized steamship over a mountain ceases to feel like a metaphor and becomes an uncomfortable reality, forcing the audience to ask whether extraordinary art can ever justify extraordinary human cost.

Seen today, it remains one of cinema’s most fascinating self-portraits, not because it celebrates genius, but because it reveals how thin the line can be between artistic necessity, obsession, and self-destruction. It ultimately enriches Fitzcarraldo, but it stands just as confidently on its own as a documentary about the price of turning an impossible dream into reality...

  10. Modus - ADE

Parallel, Friday, October 23 at 11:59 PM GMT+2

Get ready for another special ADE edition of Modus. Presenting a line up of international and local talents, expect a night of conviviality, community warmth and pure energy rippling through the dance floor. Berlin icon LOVEFOXY returns for her second ADE with Modus brining uplifting and euphoric sounds of 90s house. Hailing from Paris, LB aka LABAT celebrates club culture in all its diversity fusing hard house, techno and UKG. Local stars Olivia Lensen and Lucky Done Gone closing the bill with euphoric melodies, and deep, progressive rythms.

    About Modus

Modus is Parallel's platter for eclectic electronics, presenting events where you can experience electronic music in multiple ways: club modus, live modus - and many more modes to follow.

    Line-up

LB aka LABAT (DJ set) LOVEFOXY In her short but explosive DJ career, LOVEFOXY, the born-and-bred Berliner, has solidified her status as one of the most exciting new faces in house music. Immersed in Berlin’s legendary electronic music scene since her teenage years (her mother opened the city’s first house club, frequented by icons like David Bowie), LOVEFOXY channels a deep-rooted appreciation for the euphoric sounds of ’90s house into every performance.
Her meteoric rise is nothing short of extraordinary. By 2023, just two years behind the decks, she debuted at Boiler Room and Berghain, sharing lineups with luminaries such as Eliza Rose, Jacques Greene, Ben UFO, Joy Orbison, Seth Troxler, DJ Heartstring, and Floorplan. She has since become an internationally touring DJ, lighting up venues like KOKO, Robert Johnson, and Brunch Elektronik, as well as festivals such as DGTL, ADE/Intercell, Tomorrowland, and Awakenings.
2024 was a landmark year for LOVEFOXY, with the release of her debut EP, Burning Down the Sluthouse, on Nervous Records and a follow-up remix pack earlier this year featuring Ian Pooley, Malugi and Evissimax. Her forthcoming schedule includes two EP’s on Manchester’s Warehouse Project Records and Radio Slave’s imprint Rek’d.
LOVEFOXY has been taking her artistry to new heights with a residency at Paris’s iconic club Badaboum (featuring guests DJ Spit and Gabrielle Kwarteng). With an ever-growing devoted following that intersects with fans of LSDXOXO and Honey Dijon, she is not just a DJ but a cultural force—an embodiment of house music’s vibrant, boundary-pushing future. Olivia Lensen Lucky Done Gone As a DJ and creator, Lucky Done Gone launched his own platform Modus in 2022 to connect people and show his diverse musical taste in multiple ways, extending far beyond just house and techno. Those who have seen Lucky Done Gone play know it’s not just his sets that are contagious, but it’s his friendly artist vibe, too. His eyes are always fixed on the crowd in front of him, making sure everybody is enjoying the music as much as he is.
Lucky Done Gone's sets are a mixture of eternal styles: dreamy house, 90s techno, left field sounds and trance influences that dance between subdued vibes to the more emotional side of things.

Please familiarise yourself with the House Rules prior to arrival to help keep Parallel a safe space where people feel free to be their entire selves.

  24. Niels Orens | support: echofarmer

Cinetol, Thursday, October 22 at 08:30 PM GMT+2
