  1. Trapped inside technology?

De Balie, Saturday, November 7 at 06:00 PM GMT+1

ZEG Festival is back. With live storytelling, music and conversation, we’ll explore how a handful of tech entrepreneurs have come to dominate the game and what we can do to curb the influence of big tech and their all-encompassing systems.

A small pack of tech billionaires appear to have mistaken our world for their chess board and the rest of us for pieces. Their strategy: raise enough money to move faster than anyone else, capture infrastructure that everyone depends on, become so central the governments react to you instead of regulate you, make the rules and force everyone else to live inside them.

Through live storytelling, music and conversation, this event will explore how technology is rewriting the rules of power, how a handful of tech entrepreneurs have come to dominate the game and what we can do to curb the influence of big tech and their all-encompassing systems.

  2. CinéDialoog: On High Water

De Balie, Tuesday, November 10 at 07:30 PM GMT+1

Along Louisiana’s disappearing coast, families are working to hold on to a way of life shaped by the water.

Commercial fishermen, tribal leaders, educators, and young families confront a future marked by economic uncertainty, land loss, and increasingly powerful storms. Yet even as the landscape changes around them, they continue to rebuild homes, revive traditions, and pass hard-earned knowledge from one generation to the next.

Filmed over two years in the bayous of southern Louisiana, On High Water: Holding Ground on a Vanishing Coast is the latest film from the award-winning team at Bertelsmann Foundation Documentaries. As communities around the world face the consequences of rising waters and the possibility of losing the land they call home, the film raises questions that reach far beyond the Louisiana coast. After the screening, we will speak with the director about the film and the communities at its heart.

  4. Mx. CoelaCunt will live forever

Tolhuistuin, Saturday, November 21 at 08:00 PM GMT+1

    Theater Muziek Warming Up Festival

Welcome to the universe of Mx. CoelaCunt, a fluid being that refuses to be contained. Not by time. Not by binary systems. Not by humans.

Mx. CoelaCunt will live forever is a concert-performance in which creator, musician, and performer Djuwa Mroivili takes you into the depths. Into deep seas, fractured roots, ancient rituals, and new forms of resistance. Djuwa draws connections between Comorian traditions, queer culture, and the mysterious life of the deep sea - a world still largely unknown to humans.

The Comoros Islands - where Djuwa traces a family history - is where the essence of this journey unfolds: a place where oral traditions, music, and campy weddings intertwine the past and present. A place where matriarchal and patriarchal structures coexist. But also a place where European colonizers once stigmatized existence itself - and erased the lives of those whose gender and sexuality defied colonial norms.

Mx. CoelaCunt will live forever is a tribute to everything that moves, shifts, and refuses to disappear. An ode to survival and the different ways we do this. Through a fluid blend of musical languages, fashion and glamour, Djuwa creates a performance that is both healing and confrontational.

    Inspiration Mx. CoelaCunt
Mx. CoelaCunt is inspired by the coelacanth: a fish with a crucial role in evolutionary theory. A fish with primitive lungs and fins that move like the limbs of land animals - unnoticed by European scientists, but long known to Comorian fishers.

This concerns a performance for the Warming Up Festival. The performance is an adapted version: it features elements from the original show (including text from the show), in which Djuwa talks about her research and shares musical excerpts from the work. She has also recently performed something similar at the Festival Down The Rabbit Hole.

In her study of the Comoros, she has carried out extensive research into musical traditions and the link between those traditions and the resistance movement. She draws a parallel with the existence of the coelacanth, a fish that has been around for millions of years and has witnessed all these changes from within its caves. She will perform a number of pieces from the show, interspersed with music and narration about the stories and the traces they have left behind in the present day. The work is inherently intersectional, through her use of music, the (theatrical) texts she recites and (queer) fashion.

  5. It's the End of AI (As We Know It)

Tolhuistuin, Sunday, November 8 at 01:00 PM GMT+1

    Talk

As dominant narratives present AI as inevitable and indispensable, this micro-symposium challenges us to imagine alternatives: futures where artificial intelligence might be ecologically balanced, community-owned, or even declined altogether. Together, we’ll explore small-scale, open models, and the emerging work in art, activism, and science that pushes back against the status quo.

  6. It's Getting Hot in Here | Comedy Opening Night Warming Up Festival

Tolhuistuin, Thursday, November 19 at 08:30 PM GMT+1

    Warming Up Festival Voorstelling

Feeling the heat? This year's Warming Up Festival opens with a night that trades climate anxiety for laughter.

Join us at our Comedy Opening Night, ' It's Getting Hot in Here', where four of the Netherlands' best English-speaking comedians take the stage for an evening about how strange, funny, and occasionally absurd it is to be alive right now. In between sets, we quiz the audience with a short game show-style format with prizes up for grabs. We all could use a little laugh, so let's come together and kick off the festival with humour and a fun evening!

Featuring comedians: Phoebe Perry, Sjoerd Scott, Ronan Brosnan, Nadine Froughi, MC: Rashi Agarwal

Phoebe Perry: Born in Nebraska, USA, Phoebe Perry is a comedian and theater maker who breathes life into characters with physicality and sensitivity. The work she creates is equal parts confessional and absurd, often exploring themes of belonging, longing and being late. Phoebe is a regular comedian at Comedy Club Haug in Rotterdam and the opening act for Derek Scott Mitchell’s “Let’s Double Dutch II” tour. Phoebe is a frequent co-host of Femilicious as well as Mezrab ALT COMEDY NITE. Theaterkrant recently described her as “one of the freest spirits you can meet on stage”.

Sjoerd Scott: Sjoerd is a beacon of humour with magnetic charisma and unique cross-cultural appeal, which has quickly propelled him to acclaim. His comedic style, a masterful blend of personal anecdotes and insightful social commentary, has solidified his status as one of the most exciting voices in contemporary comedy. He has a knack for connecting with crowds, consistently delivering performances that are not just hilarious, but also deeply engaging. His distinctive comedic voice has resonated with audiences across Europe, making him a sought-after performer in comedy clubs throughout the continent.

Ronan Brosnan: Ronan is a hairy Irishman with a caustic wit and an inferiority complex. He came to the Netherlands to make the housing market more expensive for the natives, and in the meantime he enjoys going to comedy shows to legally scream at strangers. He is currently touring his show ‘Life is Shite’ around Europe as he awaits World War 3 and the glow of the mushroom cloud.

Nadine Froughi: Nadine is half Iranian, half American, raised in the UK but now mostly Dutch. With millions of monthly views across social platforms, you might have seen her on the internet. IRL, Nadine is a regular at Boom Chicago’s Comedy Embassy and Comedy Café Amsterdam, but isn’t that loyal, so you can see her perform at clubs, theatres and festivals across Europe. Her debut solo show Daydreamer has been featured at the Boom Chicago Comedy Festival, Utrecht International Comedy Festival and more. Aside from telling jokes, Nadine makes a really good shallot pasta and can deadlift over 100kg on a good day.

The Tolhuistuin Warming Up Festival is an annual climate festival that focuses on the connection between art and climate. This year, the Warming Up Festival is not asking how you can live more sustainably. It is asking why so many people, particularly young people, have disengaged from a conversation that perhaps affects them the most.

Not out of indifference, but because of mental exhaustion. Because of climate-related stress and feelings of guilt. Because of a system that emphasises individual responsibility, whilst the biggest polluters and fossil fuel subsidies largely escape scrutiny. And sometimes also because of a climate movement that seems to demand perfection rather than engagement.

Over three days, the festival brings together art, journalism, music and discussion centred on the question of how individual choices relate to systems that are largely beyond our control, and where, as a collective, we can actually exert influence. It is a festival that makes space for imperfection, for doubt and for new forms of engagement.

Check the entire Warming Up Festival program here.

Rashi Agarwal: You may know Rashi, the tallest Indian in the Netherlands, from her viral show 'OV-Takes' asking people their 'Dutch Take' on the OV. Her comedy and content move through identity, feminism, colonialism, race, and sustainability, balancing sharp observations with a willingness to turn that same lens on herself. Hailing from South India, she has become more Dutch than she would have liked, and her videos about life in the Netherlands have gone viral, earning her a rapidly growing international audience. The first edition of her debut show, 'Person of Colour ', sold out in one day and hasn't stopped since: 14 shows and counting.

  7. What’s Our Water Future?

    SPUI25, Tuesday, November 17 at 02:00 PM GMT+1

Water is perhaps the most unifying, vulnerable, international, and personal of all elements. Yet water is under increasing pressure, and the global water cycle is out of balance. How do we restore that balance? And how can science contribute to the local and global challenges of water pollution, water scarcity, and water security?

Prior to Robert Macfarlane’s BBC Reith Lecture (“Water: The Geography of Hope”), this afternoon is centered around the work of scientists studying water today: the questions that drive their research, the challenges they face, and the possibilities they see for the future. Contributors will share their concerns, ideas, and ambitions to build new partnerships around water.

Water is a global common good, and its future is a shared responsibility. This afternoon is an invitation to put water higher on the agenda: for the city, for the Netherlands, for Europe, and for the world. It is an opportunity to bring different perspectives into the same room, ask difficult questions, and begin conversations that can lead to new research and new partnerships.

Speakers and performers will engage in short academic talks, music, visual storytelling, and conversation about the ways we understand, use, govern, and live with water. The contributions will be woven together with visuals and live musical interventions by composer and cellist Saartje van Camp and moderator Tracy Metz.

    Programme:

A Bird’s eye perspective on the North Sea – Judy Shamoun-Baranes

Sharing responsibility for international rivers – Andre Nollkaemper

Who owns our water? Global and just water futures – Joyeeta Gupta

Water Futures Past – Peter van Dam

Rights of Water – Laura Burgers

The Unknown Ocean. How do we protect the deep sea we barely understand? – Jasper de Goeij

Panel: A Water Futures agenda. Together we prioritise next steps for water. Led by Tracy Metz.

Please note: this programme will take place in the Aula (Oude Lutherse Kerk) from 14:00 until 16:00. The doors open at 13:30.

    Speakers

  8. Midterm Mayhem: America Votes, the World Watches

    SPUI25, Monday, November 2 at 08:00 PM GMT+1

Donald Trump is not on the ballot this November, yet the midterm elections will be read as a referendum on him. With every House seat and a third of the Senate up for grabs, one of the most polarizing presidents in modern American history will face a major political test. Tonight, our experts will weigh the likely outcomes.

Will voters punish Republicans for rising prices and a costly war with Iran, or will entrenched partisanship prevail? Will apathy prove the most decisive force among the electorate? And will a president who has questioned the legitimacy of past elections respect the results?

The panelists will also look beyond the ballot box. What is at stake for Americans—whether citizens, legal residents, or undocumented migrants? What will the results mean for Europe, the Middle East, and the Global South? What media stories matter most to international onlookers? And how will right-wing populists abroad interpret the outcome of the US elections, as they reflect on vulnerabilities and opportunities of their own?

    Speakers

Andrew Gawthorpe is a scholar whose research focuses on the modern and contemporary United States. Though a historian by training, his work engages with insights from other disciplines, particularly international relations and American politics. He is currently the principal investigator on the NWO Vidi-funded project “American foreign policy and liberalism”. This project challenges the notion of an American-created “liberal international order” by investigating how the American approach to international order has been shaped by illiberal ideologies, such as those underpinning racism at home or imperialism abroad.

Jack Thompson is Lecturer in American Studies at the University of Amsterdam. His research focuses on the influence of political culture on US grand strategy, efforts to rebalance the transatlantic relationship, the history of US conservatism, the radicalization of the US right, and democratic backsliding. His 2019 book, Great Power Rising: Theodore Roosevelt and the Politics of US Foreign Policy (Oxford University Press), won the 2020 Theodore Roosevelt Association Book Prize.

Katjana Gattermann is Associate Professor in Political Communication and Journalism at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR). Her work focusses on media-politics relations and election campaigns in the European Union as well as their consequences for attitudes and electoral behaviour of European citizens.

Katy Hull (moderator) is Assistant Professor of Modern Gender History in American Studies at the University of Amsterdam. Her first book was The Machine Has a Soul: American Sympathy with Italian Fascism (Princeton University Press, 2021). Her current research project investigates the construction of emotions in New Left activist autobiographies.

  9. Hoe verbeeld je het onvoorstelbare? Genocide in Irak tussen geschiedenis en verbeelding

    SPUI25, Friday, October 30 at 08:00 PM GMT+1

Esther Schoorel (moderator) is promovendus aan de Amsterdam School for Regional, Transnational and European Studies (ARTES).

MAGIC CARPET SESSIONS | Adventurous, intimate & crossing borders with music from around the world!

    ★

TARAB MACHINE is an ensemble that fuses the hypnotic pulse of Middle Eastern music with the raw energy of modern rock and the freedom of jazz improvisation. Anchored by the voice and oud of Hussein, the group builds bold bridges between traditions, blending haunting maqam melodies, driving grooves, and shimmering textures.

Their genre-bending approach and powerful live performances have quickly earned them a place on the Belgian scene. Despite being a newly formed ensemble, they have already appeared at major events, including the Human’City Festival for BelRefugees (opening for Manu Chao), Plazey Festival in Koekelberg, and Brussels Jazz Weekend, among others.

Together, they transform tarab — the Arabic word for musical ecstasy — into a living, electrified experience.

TARAB Machine presents its debut EP: a bold and immersive sonic journey that announces the path ahead. The ancestral wisdom of Iraqi folklore is their starting point, and the powerful arrangements are their vehicle. 13. Luca St

Paradiso, Thursday, November 26 at 07:30 PM GMT+1

Dutch rapper and producer pays tribute to the 2000s

As a rapper and producer, Luca St has always kept things fresh by moving between different sounds. With his latest release, ‘Mascotte’, he adds a new dimension to his sound: more pop, more energy and a sound that harks back to the distinctive productions of the 2000s, but entirely in his own way.

Following his previous show in 2025, Luca St returns to Paradiso on 26 November. It will be a show where the old and the new coexist: from the tracks that started it all to new music that showcases the direction he’s heading in now.

  14. Keshavara

Paradiso, Thursday, March 4 at 07:30 PM GMT+1

Psychedelic pop with dub and disco

The four-piece band Keshavara grew up listening to the soundtracks of Tamil films and clearly have no intention of rolling the credits just yet. Led by the German-Indian Keshav Purushotham, the band blends psychedelic pop with dub and disco, singing in English, German, Tamil or simply making up their own words.

On their forthcoming fourth album, ‘Moondram Sevi’, Purushotham’s niece, Sahana Naresh, features on three tracks. In ‘Pambu Mookan Uncle’, they jointly pay tribute to the film characters from their childhood with a disco groove and a dash of house. There are also hints of psychedelic folk, whilst the tension of Italian horror films seeps into the music. In the Bovenzaal, the band will carry that cinematic atmosphere through, complete with colourful costumes and daring headwear.

  15. Imagine Film Festival: PH1SHed_

    LAB111, Saturday, October 31 at 01:00 PM GMT+1

    IMAGINE FANTASTIC FILM FESTIVAL 2026

Imagine is the largest film festival for Fantastic film in the Netherlands, showcasing the best in fantasy, horror, sci-fi and everything in between. Imagine is all about the imagination. We believe dreaming big is best, because Weird Is Wonderful.

Besides the latest genre films, restored classics and shorts, Imagine 2026 will focus on magical realism in Latin American cinema and on the films of this year’s Guest of Honour, Japanese director Kiyoshi Kurosawa. A large chunk of the programme is also reserved for 2026’s main theme, Ghost in the Feed, which focuses on the anxieties and desires that arise with each new form of media technology. The programme examines five ‘Frequencies of Fear’ from the past century: the start of TV, the VHS era, the early internet years, the onstant online feed and our current immersive times. Dive into the feed with us through films, talks, a VHS-basement, an extensive immersive programme in de Filmhallen and more.

Ghost in the Feed also creates conversations between generations: the Gen X cinephile who remembers the tactile dread of a mysteriously unlabeled VHS tape; the Millennial who experienced the internet transform from utopian playground to corporate panopticon; the Gen Z viewer navigating horror through deepfakes and disappeared stories. 16. Imagine Film Festival: Ghost In The Shell

    LAB111, Friday, October 30 at 07:15 PM GMT+1

Each generation believes their relationship to technology is unique, but we’re all possessed by the same ghosts, transmitted through different machines.

  19. Capturing Time: Ukrainian Documentary Cinema

Splendor, Sunday, November 15 at 06:00 PM GMT+1

Antonii Baryshevskyi presents SplenDoor to Ukraine XXXV:Ukrainian Documentary Cinema

In November, Amsterdam becomes a meeting point for the international documentary film community as it hosts IDFA, one of the world’s leading documentary film festivals. The festival has long provided an important platform for Ukrainian documentary filmmakers and their work.

15 November we will look back at some of the earlier films by Ukrainian filmmakers who are presenting their work at IDFA this year, including films that were part of previous IDFA selections.

The evening will be a chance to see where these filmmakers started, how their work has changed over time, and how Ukrainian documentary cinema has found new ways of capturing and making sense of reality.

The full programme and event details will be announced soon.

  20. Slow Fiction

Paradiso, Monday, February 15 at 10:00 PM GMT+1

Introspective indie rock from the New York quintet

'dollhouse', the self-released debut album by the New York band Slow Fiction, depicts identity as something that is both private and under scrutiny: a world that, in one way or another, is always in the spotlight. An uneasy sense of pretence runs like a thread through the eleven tracks, in which observation and introspection merge to explore the boundary between who we are in private and who we become when we are seen – by others, via the internet or by ourselves. The lyrics shift perspective, circling around small pains and the cruelties of others, in search of a kind of clarity. “Who are you when no one looks back or sees right through you?”, sings Julia Vassallo in the opener “junior year”, over an enigmatic bassline and jangling guitars building towards a catharsis. Slow Fiction’s music is driving rock that prompts reflection.

  21. Raymond van het Groenwoud -albumpresentatie

Paradiso, Tuesday, November 24 at 02:00 PM GMT+1

    Artist presents 'Live in Paradiso'

Tuesday afternoon, November 24. In the *Bovenzaal* (Upper Hall) of Paradiso. Raymond van het Groenewoud is being interviewed by Gijs Groenteman and is performing a few songs to mark the release of the album 'Live in Paradiso'.

The world was just emerging from quarantine; to celebrate that victory over the virus in style, Raymond van het Groenewoud performed in his Amsterdam. And in Paradiso, no less, the venue of his boyhood dreams.

The concert had been postponed five times, but that evening, it finally happened. And what a night it was. For three hours, he sang of old flames and new loves. As always, with plenty of humor, the occasional heartfelt cry, and even a rare surge of nostalgia; but always with fire in his fingers and his soul. He is past seventy, but a magician never forgets his tricks.

The night at Paradiso was given a delightful beat by the band backing him, but also by the audience before him: they applauded ever louder and danced ever more wildly. "I was immersed in a bath of appreciation and love," Raymond said later, "like nothing I had ever experienced before. It was like a dream from start to finish."

By his own account, it was his best concert ever. And fortunately, recording equipment was running that night.

No night lasts forever, but there is hope: on November 27, the album *Live in Paradiso* hits the shelves. For anyone wanting to replay that night; during special moments or whenever the mood strikes.

On November 24, around 1:30 PM, Raymond van het Groenewoud will present the album in the Bovenzaal of Paradiso itself. A relaxed Tuesday afternoon. Gijs Groenteman asks questions, and the master himself performs three songs on the piano. Perhaps you’ll be in the audience this time.

Space is limited to 100 people, so book quickly by sending an email to: [email protected]

  22. Ledbyher

Paradiso, Sunday, December 6 at 10:00 PM GMT+1

UK jerk, drill, neo-soul and grunge

Ledbyher moves between UK jerk, drill, neo-soul and grunge, pairing husky vocals with shifting synths and raw, intimate production. Describing her sound as “bedroom drill” or “lady trap,” the London-based artist balances soulful melodies with restless rhythms and a rougher DIY feel.
Born Rachel Aisyah Diack, the Indonesian Scottish rapper, singer, producer and filmmaker grew up between Germany, Indonesia and rural Norfolk. Her writing draws as much from poetry and cinema as it does from UK drill, with even her stage name borrowed from a line in Wordsworth’s 'The Prelude'. That mix runs through songs about heartbreak, longing and survival, where deeply personal lyrics meet trap beats.

On her mixtape 'The Elephant', Ledbyher brings these influences together through woozy rap, saxophone-led melodies and guitar-driven tracks. From lyrics and production to videos and artwork, she shapes a world that feels distinctly her own.

  23. Fright Years

Paradiso, Sunday, April 11 at 07:30 PM GMT+2

New indie rock band from Edinburgh

There’s something in Fright Years’ sound that can only come from Edinburgh: the weather, the beauty and the weight of everything that has happened there. The four-piece create guitar-driven indie rock in which personal pain is transformed into something universal. Since forming in 2021, Fright Years have built a reputation for powerful live performances and a rapidly growing fanbase. With new music and a new record label behind them, the band is embarking on the next chapter. Fright Years’ music draws on 1990s alternative rock, 1980s post-punk and new wave, yet sounds entirely contemporary. Influences from bands such as Wolf Alice, The Killers and Yeah Yeah Yeahs come together in a sound that is both raw and compelling. And if Florence + The Machine ever struck a chord deep within you, Fright Years are the next band you need to hear.

  25. SWELL MAPS (UK)

OCCII, Friday, March 12 at 08:30 PM GMT+1

‘A lot of late 70s bands wore grey. But we were determined to have fun’: the return of the mega-influential Swell Maps after 46 years

    SWELL MAPS [UK]

In the mid-1970s, a collective of six English teenagers started creating music together in their suburban home-town of Solihull. This project evolved into Swell Maps, around a core of three musicians: Jowe Head, his school friend the late Nikki Sudden, and Nikki’s brother, the late Epic Soundtracks. Their 1977 debut 7′′, Read About Seymour, came out on their own Rather Records. One of the first punk bands to set up an “indie” label, they were also pioneers of “alternative” music, mixing punk with experimental sounds Swell Maps released four singles and two albums in a brief but eventful career, in partnership with Rough Trade, topping UK indie charts and inf luencing acts including Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Stereolab, and Blur?

SWELL MAPS will be performing throughout 2026/2027 across the UK and Europe and are proud to present this stellar document, which maintains the group’s devotion to D-I-Y ideals and impulses. The vinyl album covers were hand-screened and stamped by a feminist cooperative in Valencia, Spain and are offered in three variants.

    https://swellmapsc21.bandcamp.com/album/c21

Half a century ago a bunch of suburban school mates from Solihull banded together to form one of the most DIY and lo-fi of groups ever in Swell Maps. With crazy names like Biggles Books and Phones B Sportsmen they created songs with equally mad titles like Midget Submarines, Helicopter Spies and Read About Seymour. The songs were submerged beneath a fuzzy din made up of hoovers, wind up toys and all sorts of paraphernalia and yet against all the odds the amazingly catchy tunes fought their way to the surface. And how. Though Swell Maps’ flame flickered only briefly before splitting in 1980 they developed instant cult status and influenced a whole generation of bands to follow from Thrilled Skinny to Sonic Youth and from Stereolab to even Nirvana and Blur. And now they are back... Kind of...

I think it is important to set the scene because this is a very hard act to follow in the second incarnation of Swell Maps, not just the passage of time but because two of the three main driving forces, Nikki Sudden and his brother Epic Soundtracks, are sadly no longer with us. But the moment Swell Maps’ original Jowe Head and his all-star band of musicians roar into their first fuzzy masterpiece, A Morning Star, any concerns are absolutely blown out of the water. A succession of uplifting, killer guitar riff after riff, slam dunk into ultra-hooky choruses; you will soon find yourself Crow Crow-ing along.

Foam Rubber Wedding, Vertical Take-Off and Landing, Saved By The Warts the titles and themes are totally picking up from the C20 albums A Trip To Marineville and Jane From Occupied Europe. Some of the songs actually date back to that time but have never seen the light of day before. It’s wonderful to hear Epic Soundtracks’ surprisingly moving keyboard ballad Jelly Babies re-crafted in the hands of Lucie Rejchrtova (Crazy World of Arthur Brown). That all star cast includes members of Wolfhounds, the Auteurs and Alternative TV and Television Personalities. With the last two bands mentioned no wonder they perform a song called Tele Visions, an instant classic by the way.

The most important comeback of the year. The spirit of a legend has been respected and represented to another generation. It doesn’t matter one jot if you are too young to have been hooked first time around you absolutely need to submerge yourself into a surreal state of Swell Maps’ C21. You can probably tell that I am enormously excited by this album. It is simply wondrous. >> https://narcmagazine.com/album-review-swell-maps-c21/

    GOOD READ >>

Championed by the BBC’s John Peel and signed to Rough Trade, the band were punk when that meant DIY, psychedelia and prog as well as screaming chords. What’s more, they loved Pink Floyd ...

Swell Maps were a punk band, but only because that word meant something different when they started making records in 1977. It didn’t mean bands called Knuckleheadz or Gimp Fist; it meant unfettered freedom, curiosity rather than rage. Theirs was a music that wandered off in unexpected directions, where songs barely hung together before falling apart, punctuated by peculiar sounds made by whatever happened to be around. It was psychedelia and it was prog and it was krautrock, every bit as much as it was punk. Most of all, it was DIY.

    https://www.theguardian.com/music/2026/mar/10/swell-maps-interview-jowe-head

Jowe Head “We polarise opinion: some people love our music, some people cannot stand it! It seems that Swell Maps continue to be an influence on many bands around the world. For example, I was amused to see a character in a Gorillaz video wearing a Swell Maps t-shirt!”

Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) “As soon as that guitar comes slicing off that crackling vinyl groove you know you’re gonna rock. It’s the best of both worlds: fist-in-the-heart guitar burnin’ rock and ahead-of-its-time songsmith awareness . . . The Swell Maps had a lot to do with my upbringing.”

Tim Gane (McCarthy / Stereolab) “When I first bought “A Trip to Marineville”, I must have played it a hundred times, just to listen to every single second of it.”

Scott Kannberg (Pavement) “Swell Maps was a big influence on our early records. They had these songs they fucked up somehow to make sound really dirty and low frequency, but they had these great songs underneath all this mess.”Alan McGee (Creation Records) “Swell Maps inspired a lot of bands that became the vanguard of the independent scene ten years later – Sonic Youth, Pastels, Mary Chain, Pavement, to name a few. Classic band and great people too!”

Ben Ayres (Cornershop) “Let’s Build A Car” is one of my favourite singles of all time, it’s like nothing else. So powerful and breaks all the rules, yet it’s perfect, with a great melody too. “A Trip To Marineville” was a really important album for me, as was “Jane From Occupied Europe”!

John Robb (The Membranes / journalist) “Swell Maps had an abrasive rawness that of course, we loved, but they had much more going on – they also had these amazing sound collages that you could get lost in. They were mysterious and they had an other-worldliness and that made you love them even more.”

Brian Turner (NYC radio presenter and musician) “My Swell Maps discovery came five seconds into the intro of “Midget Submarines” . . . avant-garage- gonzo-kraut-greatness, ambient experiments all punctuated by these incredible anthems of another universe that made complete sense and ignored everything else . . . this was a band that invented something.”

David Lance Callahan (Moonshake, Wolfhounds) “Swell Maps showed that people you can relate to could produce music of ambition, imagination and innovation. All of this was done with a liberating lack of inhibition and an overwhelming sense of fun – and music’s not music without that!”

Presale/door prices adjusted: our events are set up by volunteers in favour of supporting DIY touring acts, but it is getting ever more risky to plan and book events – please support the community and buy your tickets early! Presale closes 18.00 on day of the show.

  29. Arti Shuffle Jonge Musici: Isaure & Christian Johannes

Arti et Amicitiae, Friday, November 20 at 08:30 PM GMT+1

    Arti Shuffle Young Musicians #2

Arti Shuffles Young Musicians is a collaboration between Arti and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. This concert series offers talented young musicians the opportunity to gain valuable performance experience and showcase their artistry at various venues. Audiences are invited to discover a new generation of musicians through a diverse programme filled with inspiring and surprising performances.

Arti Shuffles Jonge Musici: Isaure & Christian Johannes

Isaure & Christian Johannes Songwriter Isaure and composer Christian Johannes come together for an evening of classical music and folk tunes. Their acoustic set of piano, guitar and vocal weaves together different repertoires: Isaure’s intimate songs with classical pieces, laying words on the melodies of Debussy, Ravel, Satie, Bach...

Isaure [she/her] is a French singer songwriter based in Amsterdam. Her music takes roots in folk, with a particular taste for melody and storytelling. Seeing her live is like witnessing a conversation between herself and her guitar, where they exchange about their favorite animals, food metaphors, love - which seems to be at the bottom of it all -, and when awkwardness happens. Isaure’s songs are like jam jars on a shelf. A collection of moments sealed in time, and neatly treasured. As time goes by, the songs infuse, until perfectly pickled or sirupy sweet. Turning life’s fruit into a good snack, could that be what music is about?

Christian Johannes [he/him] is an Amsterdam-based Dutch/Surinamese {de}composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist. He mainly works in electro-acoustic formats, and is deeply involved with folk, glitch and environmental sound, and synthesising these aesthetics. In his recently released debut album glitch_folk:a.manifesto:, Johannes reworks 8 death-related folk tunes, decomposing and breaking them down using digital means, with the aim of learning to let go of things that you love.
