FRAGMENTS
Fragment: a small part broken off or separated from something.
Is that just what I am, a collection of small parts, broken off or separated from the whole?
The little pieces of me that I’ve left, shed, dropped, lost, had taken? Pieces I might never find again and ones that I’m happy to be rid of.
Parts of identity that have been both built and tore down, that are left floating in spaces in which I have been both welcome and unwelcome.
Fragments of my community, our society, stuck to my sense of self by intention or by accident, their presence I am forced to examine.
Fragments of my psyche, that bounce around this non-stop brain, a city that never sleeps, exploding behind my eyelids.
Shards of my memories, floating like psychedelic fractal patterns, their neon threads enveloping the sparkling holograph of my consciousness.
Blocks of time that shift and jump and turn and twist, sometimes stretching unimaginably and sometimes falling through my fingertips untouched.
The segments of who I am, carved both from nature as equally as from nurture, stacked against each other, edges fraying and centres worn thin.
A splinter of anxiety, stuck beneath my ribs and curling its cooling way around my toes, giving me cold feet. Outspoken opinions, ribboning the mundane.
My dreams like the puff of a dandelion carried on a summer breeze. The wisps of love, even for the parts of me I want to hide, to lock away, to remain unseen.
What are we to do with them? These bits, parts, sections, splinters? Are we to gather them together? To apply glue along their mis-shaped edges? To make good the pieces we have collected?
Or are we to leave them be, exist as so, our beautiful, fragmented souls, upon this fools journey?

Mostly in Serbo-Croatian, with English subtitlesThis is the legendary film from former Yugoslavia, and the one that kick-started the career of Emir Kusturica (Underground, Black Cat White Cat). At the beginning of the film, a tale is told about how God came to Earth but couldn't stand the gypsies. Always marginalized, and surviving in utter poverty, the gypsy (or Roma, or Romani) communities live pretty harsh and chaotic lives. You can see that in this flick, but you also see the poetry, humor and magic.
This is the film that put Yugoslavia on the map of world cinema in the 80s, and rightly so. It embraces a kind of magic realism, and often blurs the line between reality and dream sequences. In a film like this, dreams are a part of life. This sense of illumination is only enhanced by the gorgeous Balkan music of Goran Bregović - one of the most famous soundtracks ever composed. Time of the Gypsies is an epic film with a broad scope, and although it centers on certain characters, it also takes in an entire community and their spirit.
One strand of the narrative is about a young man with special powers, and how this gift ruins his life. But it is about so much more than that, because it's bursting at the seams with both life and death. Hilarious and witty, absurd and insane, with elements of Fellini and Tarkovsky alike. The cinematography is also powerful and lucid, making this movie a tour de force both thematically and aesthetically. It's the kind of film that weaves its way deep into your soul, and for some, it's a life-changing experience. A classic of European cinema, and one that reveals the dullness and lack of imagination in modern American movies. A real beauty... full of fire and gypsy humor, making it perfect for a summer night.
