  1. Odyssey Trombone Quartet

Splendor, Saturday, June 6 at 08:15 PM GMT+2

    Odyssey Trombone Quartet:
    Mathis Kaiser , bastrombone
    Cyril Beijer, trombone
    Shao-Tong Huang, trombone, compositie
    Bente van der Brug, trombone

  5. The Right Way

Splendor, Thursday, May 21 at 08:30 PM GMT+2

Ties Mellema, Jesse Faber, Bram van Sambeek & Dudok String Quartet

For this member concert, I have invited a very special ensemble. The Dudok Quartet Amsterdam has invited me and the other musicians to the third edition of their own festival, the Dudok Muziekdagen in Kampen (May 28–31). On May 21, we will present a preview together.

The program brings together very different works:
Philip Glass’s Façades was originally written for the film Koyaanisqatsi, but eventually ended up on the album Glassworks. Its long, flowing melodic lines over a softly pulsing foundation have a certain introspective quality that differs from Glass’s more rhythmically driven music.

Sofia Gubaidulina’s Duo Sonata (1977) is of an entirely different order: quarter tones, multiphonics, and two voices that can move within completely different senses of time. Gubaidulina was an outsider throughout her life in the Soviet music world. Her teacher Shostakovich advised her to remain on her “wrong path,” and she did. She passed away in March 2025.

Then there is Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8, perhaps the most popular quartet of the twentieth century, filled with self-quotations and dedicated to the victims of fascism and war, yet equally compelling as a deeply personal document.

In addition, I will perform a solo set with electronics, presenting my latest compositions influenced by techno, jazz, minimalism, and classical music.

    The musicians:
Jesse Faber (clarinet) is a core member of the Nieuw Amsterdams Klarinet Kwartet and the Netherlands Wind Ensemble, and performed at Carnegie Hall at the age of eighteen with Jon Batiste’s trio. Bram van Sambeek (bassoon) received the Dutch Music Prize in 2009—the only bassoonist in the award’s thirty-year history—and has since developed a solo career ranging from early Baroque to heavy metal. The Dudok Quartet Amsterdam performs on major stages such as the Concertgebouw, Wigmore Hall, and the BBC Proms, while also organizing its own festival in Kampen, where you can hear Shostakovich’s String Quartets Nos. 3, 5, and 8 spread over three days.

    Dudok Quartet Amsterdam:

    Marleen Wester - violin
    Marie-Louise de Jong - viola
    David Faber - cello

    Member concert
Splendor can only be the independent and free hub that it is, thanks to the members who support us. We pay them back with our specialty: music. Every year, all Splendor musicians play one concert that's free for this crucial group to whom Splendor owes its everyday existence. Combined with many other events, this means that our members have free entrance to over 50 concerts a year for €9,99 p/m (and €4,99 p/m for minima and students!) – and receive a discount for all other concerts. Pretty good deal, right?

The members enable Splendor to remain independent, which is the only way to secure real freedom in programming, experimentation, risk-taking and the promotion of young, upcoming artists. If you can think of another place without a central programming, where last-minute concerts can be planned any moment, where there is no backstage and artists and audience are constantly mingling and hanging out at the bar, where mysterious creative outbursts can be presented that are often labeled 'too risky' elsewhere, and that still guarantees high quality by unleashing the best of The Netherlands' music scene in this creative playground – you get a free membership!

  8. Maceration Musicale

Splendor, Sunday, May 17 at 03:00 PM GMT+2

The complexity of wine — heard and tasted!

Let yourself be carried away to the oldest and most headstrong wine region of France on a journey that delights both palate and ear. Thomas Brand is a film and theatre maker, but also a wine importer — because wine is a story in a glass.

On this special evening, two passions come together: wine and music. During this musical wine tasting, Thomas takes you to the Gaillac region, a tiny wine area in the south of France, home to distinctive grape varieties such as Loin de l’Oeil, Mauzac, and Braucol. Officially one of the oldest wine regions in France, it was long overshadowed by the mass production of Bordeaux. Yet it is precisely here that a new generation of unconventional winemakers is emerging: enfant terribles who radically overturn tradition and produce with a deep respect for flavour and nature.

As Thomas guides the audience through a selection of wines, richly illustrated with stories and anecdotes, Splendor musicians translate these flavours and narratives into music. They let the wine resonate, give it a voice. Over the course of the evening, a sensory journey unfolds — of scent, taste, and sound — transporting you to a landscape where the Tarn carves deep gorges through the rock and the sun burns bright over the hills.
During this evening, you will taste six wines.

Enjoyed the wines? You can order them afterwards via the website of Comme Tu Veux, Thomas’s label, through which he imports and sells these distinctive wines — and takes enthusiasts on wine and art journeys to the heart of the region.

    Anat Spiegel (voice),
    Thomas Myrmel (trombone),
    Michael Moore (clarinet),
    Ties Mellema (saxophone),
    Jonathan Nagel (bass),
    Felix Schlarmann (drums)

    Bios
Thomas Brand is a film and theatre maker who enjoys creating immersive projects — art you can step into. He is also a wine importer. This is no coincidence: wine is a story in a glass.
It speaks of soil, wind, and rain; of sun and stone; of culture and the people who make it. Of the blood and sweat of the winemaker, of traditions — and the breaking of them. Wine is the art of balancing elements. And when we drink, we briefly become part of that balance, carried along on a journey.
    Art in a glass.

Anat Spiegel (Voice) is vocalist and composer whose work stems from a vocal perspective and focuses on the endless expressions of the human voice. In the juxtaposition of jazz, theater and contemporary classical music, Spiegel's compositions consider the cultural gravity of songs and the connection between written language and it’s sounding expression.
Thomas Myrmel (Trombone) is a composer, performer and multifaceted artist, weaving the notions of social change, craftsmanship and creative expression into every aspect of his practice.
Ties Mellema (Saxophone) Although Ties Mellema is undisputedly a virtuoso on the saxophone, he sees himself first and foremost as a musician. His craft is expressed in his continuous exploration of the outer limits of music.
Michael Moore (Clarinet) is an American jazz musician who has lived in the Netherlands since 1982, having played in a variety of musical contexts, especially those in support of theatre and dance groups as well as Misha Mengelberg's Instant Composers Pool & Georg Gräwe's Grubenklang Orchester.
Jonathan Nagel (Contrabass) is driven by a craving to convey emotions and tell stories. Continuously seeking to abandon the borders between genres, striving to merely rely on whatever means it takes to create a certain image or feeling. Alongside Contrabass, Nagel's artistic practice includes music, poetry, improvisation, physical theater, performance art and dance.
Felix Schlarmann (drums) can be found in a wide range of musical settings, performing with renown groups in the Dutch and European scene. His most recent project is Tree House, a 7-piece ensemble that has officially been premiered during the 2023 edition of the German Jazzahead.

  9. Folk Cabaret

Splendor, Thursday, June 11 at 08:00 PM GMT+2

Somewhere between the Danube and the Moulin Rouge, a mezzo-soprano meets a marimba

Mezzo-soprano Teodora Drozdik-Popović and marimbist Colin Crandal present their program Folk Cabaret—a celebration of music by 20th-century composers who pushed the boundaries of classical music by reinterpreting folk melodies and incorporating elements from traditional and popular music.
Featuring works by Xavier Montsalvatge, Kurt Weill, William Bolcom, Gustav Mahler, and others, the program brings together an unusual yet perfectly suited combination of voice and marimba, offering a fresh perspective on this expressive and meaningful music.

Marimbist Colin Crandal: “Our program brings together a somewhat unusual juxtaposition of two musical traditions: cabaret (with music by William Bolcom and Kurt Weill) and “folk”—or rather, folk as it was reimagined by 20th-century composers such as de Falla, Ligeti, Mahler, and Montsalvatge.

As performers, Teodora and I are both deeply interested in the ease and wisdom that seem to be ingrained in many folk traditions, especially in relation to our own classical training. This curiosity lies at the heart of the repertoire we’ve chosen.

Teodora is currently preparing a doctoral study exploring the Hungarian folk tradition and ways of incorporating it into the interpretation of vocal music by Bartók and Ligeti. In parallel, I’ve been working on adapting ragtime piano repertoire by Joplin and Bolcom for marimba, and more generally on translating piano music with African and folk influences to this “folk” instrument.
Out of these shared interests, “Folk Cabaret” gradually took shape. After taking the time it needed to develop, we now feel ready and eager to bring the program to audiences.”

  10. Dark summer festival

Splendor, Tuesday, June 9 at 08:30 PM GMT+2

3 acts bringing the dusk of summer nights: Zack Keim, Anat Spiegel, & SEALF w/ Oguz Buyukberber

As summer nights grow long, and dusk gently expands to contain all the gradients in the balance between light and dark, splendorian Thomas Myrmel has brought three groups together who all explore the notions of popular music through a contemporary classical lens. This evening will resonate with songs from across the planet with beautiful melodies and dense harmonies in the sonic trimmings of electronic production which teases the ear with continual sonic play.

Zack Keim (songsmith) promises the latest in raw Americana from the steel belt.
**Anat Spiegel **joined by Dario Calderone bends the song form through her meditative, colorful compositional approach, with haunting melodies floating through space.
SEALF invites special guest Oguz Buyukberber to join them in telling the chilling story of the ICE occupation of Minneapolis in Jan 2026, through a new collection of intense narrative songs sifting through the sonic representation of this drama which takes place close to home in Myrmel's city of origin.

    – Bios –
ZACK KEIM is an acclaimed American singer-songwriter from Pittsburgh, USA whose soulful melodies and deep lyrics have resonated with fans around the world. From 2022 to 2025, he toured extensively throughout the US and Europe. A former member of the Nox Boys, Keim's music caught the attention of Gregg Kostelich of The Cynics, who produced his debut solo album for Get Hip Records. Keim's powerful live performances have led him to share the stage with renowned artists such as Peter Case (The Nerves/Plimsouls), indie icon Calvin Johnson (Beat Happening/ K Records), JD Wilkes (Legendary Shack Shackers), Marty Wilson Piper (The Church), Evan Westfall (Caamp), and acclaimed indie songwriter Matt Costa.

Anat Spiegel(IL/NL/USA) is a composer and performer of new music, experimental opera, and song. Her work is nestled in the juxtaposition of theater, jazz, and contemporary classical music, and most recently touches on the spiritual aspects of sound-making. She is interested in the ways language permeates our (musical) consciousness and shapes our understanding of the world. Her research examines how vocal utterance connects the body, the subconscious, and the sonic landscape as a whole. Her instrumental works have been performed by ensembles such as the Residentie Orkest, Orkest De Ereprijs, Nederlands Kamerkoor, ONCIEM, and Ensemble Klang.
Spiegel’s multidisciplinary creations include the opera Medulla (La Monnaie), the electronic opera Before Present (Dutch National Opera / Amsterdam Dance Event), and the online opera The Transmigration of Morton F (Holland Festival). Anat earned her Master’s degree in Composition in 2025 at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague.

Dario Calderone is a multidisciplinary artist, composer and musician, born in Rome in 1978 and currently based in Amsterdam. Internationally recognized as a double bass player, he has collaborated with composers and artists such as Pierre Boulez, Salvatore Sciarrino, Annea Lockwood, Christian Marclay, and Druba Ghosh. He has been a member of contemporary ensembles including Algoritmo (2005–2010), Nieuw Ensemble (2009–2019), and Trio Feedback (2020–2024), and has toured with Klangforum Wien, Constantinople, and the Atlas Ensemble. He is currently a member of MAZE. Calderone has made a significant contribution to the development of the solo double bass repertoire, premiering hundreds of new works by composers such as Peter Ablinger, Giorgio Netti, Alberto Posadas, Helena Tulve, Yannis Kyriakides, Bernhard Lang, and Silvia Borzelli, among others. His work spans composition, sound installation, recording, and community-based practices, and is deeply informed by Deep Listening as a method for artistic research, social engagement, and ecological awareness. His work often unfolds in participatory formats—workshops, listening gatherings, and site-specific situations—moving beyond the conventions of the concert hall. His ongoing research includes dream yoga, collective dreaming, and listening to dreams as practices for community building and social transformation.

Sealf is the joyous product of the universal coincidence where electronic wizard Thomas Myrmel crossed paths with bassist and soundsmith Jonathan Nagel. Together they explore the farthest reaches of song form, deftly weaving melodies with sound walls and trilling frequencies drawing the listener into a sonic meditation sculpted into Myrmel's evocative lyrics.

Thomas Myrmel (Voice/electr/Trombone) is a composer, performer and multifaceted artist, weaving the notions of social change, craftsmanship and creative expression into every aspect of his practice.

Jonathan Nagel (Contrabass) is driven by a craving to convey emotions and tell stories. Continuously seeking to abandon the borders between genres, striving to merely rely on whatever means it takes to create a certain image or feeling. Alongside Contrabass, Nagel's artistic practice includes music, poetry, improvisation, physical theater, performance art, and dance.

Oguz Buyukberber's wide ranging work can be heard on over 60 CDs full of original music for acoustic and electronic formations. His visual impairment has shaped the way he learns, creates and teaches, and as a life long student, he studied bass clarinet, composition, electronic music and visual arts and holds multiple degrees. He has published a book of his own approach to composition and improvisation, recorded for ECM and Blue Note, was invited to prestigious residencies such as the EMS, Erica Synths HQ, STEIM and taught at universities worldwide.

  11. Cinema: In Spring

Splendor, Tuesday, June 16 at 08:00 PM GMT+2

Ukrainian avant-garde movie by Mikhail Kaufman (1929), piano music by Antonii Baryshevskyi

In Spring is a masterpiece of Ukrainian cinema avant-garde, a non-fiction film made by Mikhail Kaufman, Dziga Vertov’s brother and co-author, along the lines of the avantgardist theory of «cine-eye». The film shows Kyiv in 1929, almost unknown today. Pictures of waking city, its resurging life resonate with lyrical views of reviving nature. Kaufman’s attentive camera dwells deliberately on the smiling faces of children, lyrically depicting a declaration of love to Kyiv. In Spring, Kaufman used the method of 'hidden camera' for the first time.

The film will be accompanied live by Ukrainian pianist Antonii Baryshevskyi, who will perform his own original score. A member of the Splendor collective, he is also a prizewinner of the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition and the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition.

This screening is part of the Splendor for Ukraine program and the Ukrainian Film Club in Amsterdam.
