  1. I was looking for ideas for easy pieces to play on the mikrofööt (Hi @thomas 👋 ) from Boismortier’s commercial works. Boismortier wrote a lot of simple pieces in order to make money. 🤷
Then I came across this fresh, simple melody… almost a musical haiku.
    "Viele" p.3:

Perhaps only the first four bars are needed, to be repeated with variations. 😏

So that you can understand what I’ve got in mind, here’s more or less my idea played on the #melodeon. Of course, it's a twist but i like to twist baroque melodies in a melodeon way. 😉

  2. I’m in the process of converting my melodeon playing to using what is known as the the "Dutch Reversal", where button five on the inside row plays E/D rather than D/E. My latest “composition” is what happens if you play “Speed the Plough” as though on a “normal” melodeon. I think it sounds kinda groovy and minorish, so am claiming it as a “composition” until told otherwise, and naming it “Sneller met die ploeg” [No longer “Haasten de ploeg”] until someone improves my Dutch. (@sandradejong might you maybe advise please?)[Now received with grateful thanks!] Dots with .abc format notation in alt text below.

    Edited to reflect naming advice

Same goes for tomorrow’s Red Cuthbert Day of Dance at Bedford Fringe Festival, should any mastodonians happen to be there, though it’ll be a different mallard on a different melodeon… come and say “hi” if you like.

  4. The Binghamton Morris Men and the BF Harridans will perform English morris dances on the streets of Binghamton this Friday evening (June 5) at First Friday. We'll probably be on State Street somewhere around 7:00 pm, though if you really want to be sure of finding us, join us at The Garage around 6:15 pm and follow us from there.

  5. Public Service Announcement: Naragonia’s “Pink Molly” by Toon Van Mierlo is an absolutely brilliant tune, so much so that having put it on I felt the need to tell you all.

I was listening to it on their album “Tandem” but there’s a tuition version that goes with their G/C diato tunebook on YouTube here: youtu.be/OMzQrLdzuzw

  6. Just found out that Julian Sutton (JS hereinafter) will be the third tutor at this year’s Halsway D/G weekend, so a little anecdote…

About ten years ago I went to Melodeons at Witney and JS was one of the tutors. The workshop of his I went to was “all abilities” and I was very much a beginner. It was way, way beyond me and I came away massively frustrated and annoyed that it was not as pitched. Trying to learn “The Great North Run” and “93 Not Out” at great pace, suitable for beginners?! I walked out knowing I’d learnt nothing and wasted that time when I could’ve gained useful knowledge/ technique in a different workshop.

Fast forward to last year at Halsway when playing in the bar one evening, someone started a tune and I joined in without particular difficulty although I didn’t know it, and also the one they segued into. “What were they?” I asked, “I don’t know them but seemed to be able to play them.” The reply, of course, was “The Great North Run into 93 Not Out.”
I’m not saying I guarantee I could repeat the capability to just join in and play them, but clearly something had stuck and I’d done JS a great disservice!

The first year I went to Burwell for the music summer school, I was in Andy Cutting's mixed band group, with violins, flutes, whistles and guitars. I stood next to him and we played this as part of our set.

When we were finished I went outside to phone my wife and cried. It was one of the most beautiful moments of my life.

  8. Looking at “Barbie Girl” (BG hereinafter) as the foreman of our morris side wants to write a new dance and it’ll need a tune… and this would fit on our instruments nicely and get the public’s attention.
By my reckoning BG has four parts. Three of those parts are eight bars each, in line with “standard form”… but the first one is 18 bars (well, 9 bars with different first/second time through endings) and includes the necessary run up for the start of the second part to feel right.
Because the run up to the B music can’t be jemmied into the end of the C or D music, we can’t just use the A music as an intro then loop the other parts (my first thought).
Do any of you internet folkies have any bright ideas to tweak BG so the A music is a multiple of 8 bars (and don’t say play it for 9x8 =72 bars, that’s much to much of it!)?
Sheet music here, (though we’d play it in G) sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/sh

Alternatively, any suggestions for upbeat, attention grabbing, well know pop similar to BG that fits nicely into an octave and a half, is in 8 or 16 bar chunks, and isn’t beset with accidents or key changes?

  9. Bouwerie Boys Morris Dancers perform "Boys of the Bunch" in Cooperstown, NY on the 2024 Gilbertsville Tour.

The 2026 tour begins in a week!

  10. The Albion Band’s “Lark Rise to Candleford” was one of my childhood exposures to folk, and I still have my parents vinyl of it. Listening to it again, I had forgotten quite how good it is. Though I appreciate different tracks to I used to, I think that uplifting opening is why I have such affection for “Brighton Camp”.

Also you can play a guessing game each time you hear a melodeon: is that John Kirkpatrick or John Tams playing it? (What, you didn’t know that Tams could play the box as well as singing, fiddling etc? Shame!)

  11. This recording from Blowzabella’s early days of the well known “Bear Dance” is listed as “Bear Dance No. 3” - so is it the/a third recording of it, or are there two other Bear Dances that didn’t become popular? Anyone know?

  12. So, I'm back home and settling down with a teapot of Earl Grey, a melodeon and some tin whistles. It's music practice time!

Incidentally, I've had this song going round in my head all day (trying not to burst into it in public):

  13. Today, 11 Pluvîose, is the day of ellébore, and once I noticed that it was inevitable that I’d share this awesome Naragonia tune - Hellebore youtu.be/_EezqKvAdJE (played here with Gregory Jolivet)

  14. Today’s exciting delivery!

For anyone interested it is Milleret-Pignol layout in “D/G” - so D/Ehm/Accs… the “G/C” equivalent works well for me, so it made sense. Yes, it is… unusual…
