Most of my domains I host on #porkbun are not reachable. Anyone else having the same issue? Already contacted support, hope they can fix this quickly.
-
Domain update: I've purchased a new cheaper domain and will be creating a new Mastodon server soon. I've also transferred my .com out of Namecheap.
#Porkbun made all of this so easy and much less costly than that stupid renewal would have been.
Very happy.

No joke, I'm really impressed with the support I've received from #Porkbun.
I tried to register an IDN domain, but it failed. Turns out: The mapping of the supported language for IDN on this TLD was somehow broken or out of sync.
Within a day, the issue was resolved, and the correct language is now available on the specific TLD page. In the meantime, they manually registered the domain for me.
They provided the best support experience I've had with a service provider in years.

Ah, #Porkbun, where buying a domain now requires more ID than joining a witness protection program! 🐷🔍 Apparently, preventing online shenanigans needs the same scrutiny as getting into a nightclub. Now all they need is a bouncer and a velvet rope! 💼🚫

Bash, crontab, #porkbun api - I'm now two for two in registering expiring domains as soon as they became available with this tech stack and avoided going through domain snap/auction websites.

I recently moved my personal vanity domain (isaacwyatt.com) to Porkbun. I didn't know before moving that they don't support wildcards in their email forwarding like you can do with gmail, or other registrars.
I'll have to figure something out since I have a lot of wildcard patterns for various things like newsletters and certain websites or services.

I like how #Porkbun has the New Pork Times as its newsletter.

On #porkbun I could register without ever configuring a password. The account was set up with passkeys from day one.
Also, the pricing they have is very competitive, so a clear recommendation if you want to move anywhere with your private domains.

So I did it! I got myself a domain on #porkbun and use #tailscale to keep no ports open on my home network giving me a #NextCloud that I can access outside of my local network. Followed the #techhut tutorial on it to set up the all in one #docker.
This is my first "pro" set up and I am feeling pretty good about my #homelab.
The only thing missing is a caddy adapter thing to add an extra drive. The machine is an #optiplex9020 that I am saving from a landfill; just want to make use of the optical drive for something useful. I have #lvm set up, so adding more storage is going to be easy.
This was a good weekend.
Next in my #selfhosting is to also get a personal website going.

@mick @EricCarroll I’m sure #fastmail is fine. I use #migadu for email. Few frills, no AI bullshit, very reasonably priced. #porkbun, of course, are brilliant for domain names.
-
Just got my first ever #Porkbun phishing email! I made sure to send a screenshot to the Porkbun team to let them know they've made it to the big time and congratulated them on that.
It's gotta be flattering when your user base is big enough to make scammers pay attention. 😆 🐷

Jeez, .social TLDs are ~$33 to renew :nkoCrying:
It doesn't seem to be specific to Porkbun either, so I'm definitely not complaining about them!

#Domain business is crooked.
There was a domain I really wanted to buy, and it was in deNIC's Redemption Period. I waited till the day it was supposed to become free, but it was snatched by a domain reseller; the homepage displayed some dubious links, and there was a form where I could make an offer. Looked the company up, found out it only accepts 4-digit dollar amounts and bigger, so I never bothered.
Until an update a few days ago? I wanted to check how long I'll have to wait, and I saw it was acquired by a different domain reselling company, and I can now get it from #GoDaddy for about £80? That's a lot less than I thought it would be, but it's still a lot for a .de domain (which I get for under $3 on #Porkbun). GoDaddy seems to charge a premium because the domain is "15 characters or shorter"??? Since when is the bar so high up? 😭 I mean, what did I expect from the literal Satan of domain registrars?
Now I'm at a crossroads. I really want the domain, but I will only use it for private things, and only a handful of people will ever visit the website, if at all... 80 quid is more expensive that all but one domain I own, together 😩
-
I have a domain name renewal coming up soon, so I decided it'd be good to try switching from #Namecheap to #Porkbun.
Given a lot of things have been less than ideal lately, I'm glad at least this was quick and painless! The DNS were automatically carried over so I think I have to do… exactly nothing. And I even save $6 in the process? That'll do, pig… That'll do.

When did it become a thing for online login forms to initially display only an e-mail field and require an additional click for the password field to appear?

Woohoo! I did a new thing!
I now have my own domain name: badnetmask.dev, registered with Porkbun. Soon I will be using it for all sorts of crazy things. Stay tuned!
In the mean time, you can check out this neat page with all my links. It has been deployed using a Little Link container, as an Azure Web App, automated using Terraform. Eventually I will blog about this adventure.
Welcome to my new "homepage"!

Via Porkbun's website, small price increases for certain (niche) TLDs coming April 1 (and no, it doesn't appear to be an April Fool's joke 😂) https://porkbun.com/blog/domain-name-prices-increase-april-2025

#PHISHING WARNING
Emails targeting domains hosted by #Porkbun are being sent en-mass to emails attached to the domain; rather, to any email their scraper can find on a webpage.
I received two emails for two of my domains with Porkbun, from:
dh_e82aun [at] pdx1-shared-a1-28.dreamhost.com
which direct me to login to:
hxxps:// porkbunrr [dot] web [dot] appThe web.app domain forwards to pay [dot] iagadvanced [dot] com
BE VIGILANT!
I've already submitted phishing reports to the host and registrar, and forwarded the email to Porkbun. Further reports will be submitted to relevant groups and anti-phishing lists.
BE VIGILANT!!!

Fedi recommended #porkbun for domains and... can I just gush about them for a minute?
I tried my hand at domain forwarding with #Carrd but their documentation was out of date. K, cool.
Jumped on with porkbun support, was chatting with a helpful human within two minutes :blobfoxbongo:
Not only was Trevor the Support Guy friendly and helpful but he also walked me through each step with screen grabs so I learned as we went. AND for extra credit, he's going to email Carrd and tell them to update their docs.
So anyway, if you're looking to go #domain shopping, HIGHLY recommend!

Is #PorkBun any good? I see positive comments but would like feedback if poss. I want to transfer a .eu domain from Ionos cos Im sick of Ionos.

🤗 Learn from my mistakes:
Yesterday, I rushed into purchasing a MyPrepaidCenter Prepaid Card (MasterCard) without realizing that MyPrepaidCenter was the provider. My haste caused me to overlook important details.
Later, I attempted to use the card on Namesilo, which resulted in my account being temporarily disabled. Thankfully, Namesilo quickly reinstated my account after I contacted them and explained the issue.
Subsequently, I tried to buy a domain from Porkbun, but the card was not accepted by Stripe.
I later discovered on Reddit that MyPrepaidCenter's fraud detection system is overly sensitive and often doesn't work reliably. The workaround, as many users have suggested, is to purchase Amazon gift cards with MyPrepaidCenter prepaid cards.
Fortunately, my card had a balance of only $5, and Namesilo understood the situation, reinstating my account promptly. Otherwise, I could have lost $20 and access to our Pixelfed instance, NixOrigin's domain (nixorigin.one), which could have seriously damaged my reputation.
Learn from my mistakes, and please be cautious when dealing with prepaid cards from providers like MyPrepaidCenter. Share this information within the fediverse communities to help others avoid similar issues.

@jfmblinux I never considered the mailboxes to be free, but 'included' as one had to pay considerably more to register a domain with Gandi, when compared with other registrars. I recommend Porkbun if you want to move your domain, and for your email check out Purelymail:

@floppy @ScottMortimer @bill @whiskeyputers Thanks for the tip on #Porkbun turning evil. I was planning to use them soon but I guess I’ll have to look closer at #TransIP & njal.la instead. If those don’t pan out it’ll turn into a research project at that point. Perhaps the way forward would be to harvest the db of ICANN-accredited services & do a #Cloudflare check on each, then look for those with gratis whois privacy.
-
@whiskeyputers @bill @ScottMortimer If you plan to use whois masking, then the bad choices would be #Cloudflare sites (#gandi, #godaddy, #namecheap, #namesilo, #registerDotCom) because CF sees your unmasked whois info. Some non-CF options are: #TransIP, #porkbun & njal.la. Exceptionally, some of the CFd ones I mentioned only use CF DNS, thus they can spontaneously switch CF on at any time (e.g. during peak usage).
