I had no idea that Xournal++ had geometry tools. I discovered the compass and the speed square while doing some idle sketching for an upcoming coffee table build on the PineNote! This is the appropriate level of "CAD" for me at this stage of the build, graph paper with a protractor but super easy copy paste to visualize various combinations.

This is open hardware running free and open source software, I love this so much!

As a high school math teacher, I have really enjoyed the functionality of Xournal++ for making tutorial videos using my graphics tablet and OBS Studio. Integrated LaTeX is great, but I still have a bit of a wishlist of features that I haven't found as plugins just yet:

1. A proper function grapher. I used to create/import via graphfree.com, but with updates to that site it is not as user-friendly as it once was. Creating/importing from DESMOS or GeoGebra is...okay, but not as great for my use case as graphfree once was. Something more native to Xournal++ would be nice.

2. A skeuomorphic compass tool (for Geometry construction demonstrations). I know that it does have a compass tool, but students need to see how this would work with the physical device - where to place the "pointy end" and "pencil end" of a physical compass. (my old promethean board software and some other website I can't recall had one, which was great!)

Always looking to learn more about FOSS tools to improve my math teaching!

From what I read here, #Okular and #Xournal++ look promising.

#inkscape may be capable of this, but it’s probably not a very efficient tool for the job.

Stamping a #PDF file (e.g. add a signature) in 2026 on #Linux seems to still be an impossible task without some weird gimmicks. (I don't mean digital signing, BTW.)

LibreOffice Draw could work but messes up with the fonts.

pdftk can do it but it needs the “stamping” signature file to be correctly sized and positioned —good for batch processing, bad for single files.

Any ideas?

@happyborg We did it with a simple #xournal / #xournalpp drawing as we have devices with pen-support. As a drawback, you need to construct everything first and everything isn't exact, but it just works. Otherwise #scribus or #libreoffice Draw might work.

Liebe #Linux -Bubble. Vielleicht hat einer von euch einen Tipp fur mich: Ich möchte auf einem Tablet, das auch Stift-Eingabe unterstützt Pdfs lesen und markieren. Bedienung gerne so wie bei #xournal : Finger -> scrollen, Stift -> markieren. Aber warum taugt xournal nicht?
'klassische' PDF -Reader wie #okular speichern die Markierung als markierten Text ab, xournal nur als zwei Layer eines Bilds. Fur meinen Workflow brauch ich ersteres. Okular passt leider beim Werkzeugwechsel nicht mit Touch.

Wenn es da nicht gibt, dann bitte eins, das keine Tracker enthält wie 99% aller Playstore Apps.

Das ganze sollte auch Offline funktionieren, da sie das auch im Unterricht mit nutzen möchte

Inzwischen habe ich ein #X1tab gen3 von #levono und habe die tablet-Funktion mit #opensuse #tumbleweed und Plasma Mobile gut zum Laufen bekommen. Vorher noch die #maliit-Tastatur installiert. Auch der #pen wird erkannt in #xournal (leider nur dort).
Nur mit kde-Plasma (ohne mobile) geht es leider nicht bei mir in der reinen tablet-Funktion.
Ich bin sehr erfreut über mein neues Spielzeug 😀

I just spent half an hour failing to annotate a pdf on #nixos with #xournal .
Turns out that's because of something about cairo in NixOS 24.11

Thanks! I keep forgetting to specify the "T" identifier, as I rarely use the tablet feature. Actually, it's not supported (the digitizer, that is) in #OpenBSD as far as I can tell, but everything else works great.

I used it occasionally in tablet mode (using #Xournal and then Xournal++) when I first got it in early 2019, but it was more valuable as an ordinary laptop, as I primarily bought it for writing, which is what it's used for nowadays: as a dedicated writing station, as documented here and here ;)
