  1. Hey EU friends 👋

Google's new reCAPTCHA logs which certified device visited which site and when. Across millions of websites. Without meaningful consent.

That's not just sketchy. That might be illegal under GDPR.

Time to ask some questions. Ep 26 tells you where to start.

  18. Your lease didn't just rent you a roof. It rented you a node in a network.

Smart locks, thermostats, and water sensors are logging your life to the cloud. And you didn't consent.

  19. You chose the smart vacuum. You didn't choose the smart lock on your front door.

One you can unplug. The other? You're forced to use it. You can't swap it for a dumb deadbolt. You can't opt out. It's in the lease.

Your home shouldn't be a surveillance tool you can't turn off.

  20. CW: AI generated episode cover. My podcast isn't AI though. If it was I'd make it get rid of the breaths and fumbled words that are sometimes in there.

Your water sensor knows when you shower. Your thermostat knows when you sleep. Your smart lock knows who visits.

And your landlord owns all that data.

  21. Your smart lock doesn't just open your door. It opens a database your landlord has access to.

Every entry. Every exit. Every guest. Timestamped and stored forever.

And you didn't even choose the brand.

It's not all hopeless though. There are ways to push back. Listen to episode 25, and join the resistance

Dodatkowa warstwa ochrony: Wszystkie aplikacje mają wyłączone śledzenie, dostęp do lokalizacji i Siri.

  36. I'm curious to hear what others are #SelfHosting! Here's my current setup:

    Hardware & OS

    Infrastructure & Networking

    Security & Monitoring

    Authentication & Identity Management

    • Authelia (Docker): Just set this up for two-factor authentication and single sign-on. Seems to be working well so far!
    • LLDAP (Docker): Lightweight LDAP server for managing authentication. Also seems to be working pretty well!
      #AuthenticationTools #IdentityManagement

    Productivity & Personal Tools

    Notifications & Development Workflow

    • Notifications via: #Ntfy (Docker) and Zoho's ZeptoMail (#Zoho)
    • Development Environment: Mostly using VSCode connected to my server via Remote-SSH extension. #VSCodeRemote

    Accessibility Focus ♿️🖥️

Accessibility heavily influences my choices—I use a screen reader full-time (#ScreenReader), so I prioritize services usable without sight (#InclusiveDesign#DigitalAccessibility). Always open to discussing accessibility experiences or recommendations!

    I've also experimented with:

    • Ollama (#Ollama): Not enough RAM on my Pi.
    • Habit trackers like Beaver Habit Tracker (#HabitTracking): Accessibility issues made it unusable for me.

I don't really have a media collection, so no Plex or Jellyfin here (#MediaServer)—but I'm always open to suggestions! I've gotten a bit addicted to exploring new self-hosted services! 😄

What's your setup like? Any cool services you'd recommend I try?

  37. Just re-read the @privacytools article about the attempted hostile #takeover, and my disgust for @jonah resurfaced.

I identify with the writer's personality of focusing on doing things better, not giving a shit about bureaucracy, the difficulty and time-consuming battles a technical-focused person has against a smooth-talker #manipulator and the possibility for #abuse by a power/fame seeking asshole this brings.

From the writer's point of view, this is exactly the kind of environment a power seeking asshole will try to #exploit for their own benefit and that seems how @privacyguides came to be.

I also like #anonymity and focus on giving my best, not #fame and #glory.

    Fuck you @jonah !

I will continue to support @privacytools
