Microsoft Intune does not have any built-in options for updating installed applications on Windows computers.
If you want to update applications on managed computers, you must manually create a new version of the given application and deploy it to all computers. However, this is quite a lot of manual work, and you also have to monitor the availability of new versions of installed applications, which is another lot of manual work.

System Cleaner BleachBit Gets ‘Major Update’
Open source system cleaning app BleachBit has issued its first major update in over a year, bringing improved cleaning capabilities, security fixes, and myriad changes with it. For the benefit of those with dusty memories, BleachBit is a free, open source system cleaner for Windows and Linux, written in Python and GTK 3. Similar to other apps of its kind, BleachBit helps free up disk space by cleaning out caches, cookies, and other transient cruft. It can also delete files securely, wipe unallocated disk space, and squeeze Firefox’s SQLite database to improve performance. BleachBit 5.0 expands the feature set to :sys_more_orange:

Mission Center 1.0 Adds New Features
Linux system monitoring app Mission Center has put out its first update in 6 months – and it’s a big one! Mission Center 1.0 adds new hardware tracking, UI tweaks, and refactors its backend to provide palapble performance improvements, boost the app’s responsiveness and minimise ‘time deviations between refresh cycles’. The latter may sound a tad dry on the ‘excitement’ scale but, arguably, it’s a big thing: a real-time monitoring app is used for, well, real-time monitoring and those tweaks ensure hardware and system process info shown is more precise. For a closer lookout the “visible” changes in this release, :sys_more_orange:

Rnote 0.12 Released with Improved Linux Note-Taking Features
A major new release of Rnote, an open-source app for taking handwritten notes, sketching out ideas and annotating documents and pictures, is out. Rnote 0.12 brings several new features, new customisation and configuration options, user experience buffs, bug fixes, and other lower-level tune-ups. For those unfamiliar with it, Rnote is a digital note-taking app built using GTK4 and Rust. It’s primarily intended to be used with stylus input (so includes pen pressure, stroke styles, button actions, etc) but supports typed text entry, shapes, importing images, etc too. Rnote offers a range of document layouts, from fixed pages to infinite canvases, :sys_more_orange:

Celluloid 0.28 Adds Lua Module Support, Refreshes UI
Open-source video player Celluloid saw a notable new release at the weekend, bringing a refreshed user interface (among many other changes) to users. Celluloid is a popular GTK front-end to MPV, the (exhaustingly) configurable cross-platform, command-line based media player, and makes many of MPV’s more advanced features a touch easier for users to find, try and benefit from. In Celluloid 0.28 its developers have focused on improving the UI —not hugely, don’t fret. Player controls see refinement in both regular mode, full-screen mode and if ‘floating’ controls are enabled for windowed mode – fewer buttons are shown by default: As :sys_more_orange:

DeaDBeeF 1.10 Release Brings New Features
A new version of DeaDBeeF music player is out, bringing some cool features, FFmpeg 7 support, and a flurry of bug fixes to long-time fans. The popularity of traditional desktop music player apps has dipped considerably since the arrival of music streaming services like Spotify, which give users on-demand (and often free) access to a far larger catalogue of artists, albums and releases. Still, many people (myself included) have libraries filled with MP3 and other audio files, and do enjoy listening them. I’d wager most such users have (by now) settled on their preferred local music player; for many, that :sys_more_orange:

Firefox 137 Released with Tab Groups, Address Bar Revamp + More
Tab grouping is the latest big-ticket feature to be added to Mozilla Firefox, which sees a new stable release roll out from today. Last month’s Firefox 136 update delivered long-requested support for vertical tabs, a redesigned sidebar experience giving easy access to existing and new features (including online AI chatbots), and flipped the switch on AMD video hardware decoding for Linux users. Firefox 137 is an equally big update, bringing tab grouping, a revamped search bar, and a host of other changes. Let’s take a look. Tiling Shell GNOME Extension Update Adds New Features
An update to Tiling Shell, the efficient window snapping extension for GNOME Shell, is rolling out with some appreciable enhancements. Its nifty ‘Windows Suggestions’ feature, which makes it easy to tile your other open windows to remaining spaces in a layout, is now available when using the Snap Assistant. The option has to be manually enabled, but once done: As a reminder for those less-familia with this extension, Tiling Shell offers lots of different ways to tile windows besides the slide-in Windows 11-esque) ‘Snap Assistant’ drop zone demoed above. Extension Manager Update Brings UI Buffs, Support for GNOME 48
If you’re an avid user of GNOME Shell extensions then a) you’re in good company, and b) you’ll be familiar with Matt Jakeman’s terrific Extension Manager app since it makes finding, installing and managing GNOME extensions terrifically easy. This week Extension Manager received a small-ish update. I was going to cover the changes in my next Linux Release Roundup at the end of the month, but with GNOME 48 out—cue the “does my favourite extension still work” panic—it feels fitting to let the update stand in a solo spotlight. Especially since Extension Manager‘s Flatpak build now depends on the GNOME :sys_more_orange:

Linux App Release Roundup (Feb 2025)
February was a bumper month for Linux app updates, bringing new releases of Mozilla Firefox, LibreOffice, ONLYOFFICE and more — as well as a slew of smaller app updates that didn’t get a full-length article on this blog. Rather than skip over them entirely I thought I’d resurrect my Linux Release Roundup thread1 to provide a monthly (perhaps twice-monthly, if there’s a lot) run-through of some of them. After all, for those of us on fixed-release Linux distribution like Ubuntu may find one of these smaller updates fixes a flaw or fleshes out a feature to make it worth upgrading :sys_more_orange:

Refine (Advanced GNOME Settings Apps) Adds More Options
A clutch of new customisation and configuration options were added to Refine, a GTK4/libadwaita app in the vein of GNOME Tweaks (but better), over the weekend. Refine is compelling due to its goal of offering the “convenience to add or remove options without touching a single line of source code” — though for a GUI option to exist it must be hooking into a variable within GNOME, i.e., it can’t magic up a toggle to make it rain glitter! A brief bit of turbulence ensnared those attempting to run the tool on Ubuntu after I covered it in early January :sys_more_orange:

Flatpak 1.16 Improves USB Access, Wayland Integration & Accessibility
A new stable release of Flatpak is out with a wealth of improvements in tow. Flatpak 1.16.0 is the first stable release in the new 1.16.x series, coming more than two years after the Flatpak 1.14.x cycle began and containing features, fixes, and other work undertaken from the 1.15.x development releases. Such as? Well, the way that Flatpak apps access USB devices is improved in Flatpak 1.16.x thanks to a new input device permission. Ardour 8.8 (Open Source DAW) Drops Fresh Fixes & Features
Ardour is one of the most popular and powerful open-source digital audio workstations (DAW) around, and a major new update was recently made available. Now, I won’t profess to be some kind of music-making maestro, though I did spend a lot my late teens face-first in FL Studio (formerly Fruity Loops) trying – and failing – to channel my inner Cash Cash (’08 era, before they got big). NetworkManager 1.50 Released with Compelling Set of Changes
A new version of NetworkManager – used by most Linux distributions (including Ubuntu) to manage wired and wireless network connections – was released this week. NetworkManager 1.50 won’t be included in Ubuntu 24.10 (that ships with v1.48) but I think some of the changes it makes may be worth knowing about all the same. Notably, NetworkManager 1.50 now formally deprecates support for dhclient in favour of its own internal DHCP client. The former is now no longer be built “…unless explicitely (sic) enabled, and will be removed in a future release.” Will this have a major issue? Unlikely; NetworkManager began :sys_more_orange:

Parabolic, The Open-Source Video Download App, Issues Big Update
There are plenty of ways to download videos from well-known video streaming sites on Ubuntu but I find Parabolic the easiest, least hassle option out there. For those yet to hear about it, Parabolic is a GTK4/libadwaita app for Linux (or a Qt one for Windows) that offers what it describes as a ‘basic frontend’ to yt-dlp. All sites supported by yt-dlp are supported in this app. Paste in a URL, validate, and download. Parabolic lets you download multiple videos simultaneously and save them to popular video or audio formats; sign-in with account details (if needed) and see the credentials to :sys_more_orange:

Mission Center (Linux System Monitor) Now Reports Fan Info
A major new release of Mission Center, a modern system monitor app for Linux desktops, has been released. Fans of this Rust-based GTK4/libadwaita system monitoring tool (which to address the recurring elephant in the room does have a user interface inspired by—but I’d argue superior to—the Windows system monitor app) will find a lot to like in the latest update. I’m not going to recap all of this tool’s existing features in this post (I’ve covered this app a few times in the past) and instead focus on what’s changed in the latest build, released at the weekend. Ebook App FBReader Adds Support for DRM Ebooks
FBReader 2.1 has been released for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with the team behind the eBook reading app calling it “a major update for desktop platforms”. If you’re not familiar with FBReader (the name stands for ‘Favourite Book Reader’) it’s a Qt-based ebook reader with customisation options, an ebook library, and integration with online sources to download ebooks. FBReader was open-source software until 2015, after which it transition to freeware for Windows, macOS, and Linux (closed source, but free), and freemium for Android and iOS (free version limited, paid version available). Tiling Shell Adds Another Way to Tile Windows Quickly
If you’ve tried the Tiling Shell GNOME extension you’ll know how easy it makes it to tile application windows in GNOME Shell, from simple to more complex. The latest update, which began rolling out through the GNOME Extensions website this weekend, adds yet another intuitive way to tile windows as you work. First it provided a slide-in Windows 11-style Snap Assistant on to which you drop windows to tile them accordingly. Next, it added keyboard shortcuts to support tiling windows without using a mouse. Then, more recently, edge-tiling introduced. But Tiling Shell v12 adds another way to tile – one :sys_more_orange:

Linux System Monitor App ‘Mission Center’ is Now Even More Useful

HandBrake 1.8 Released with GTK4 UI, FFV1 Encoder + More
The popular, powerful, and cross-platform video converter HandBrake recently put out a new version with a notable improvement. HandBrake 1.8.0 now uses GTK 4 for the user interface, dropping GTK 3 entirely. This toolkit uplift (facelift?) has been in the works for a year or two. Although it’s not using libadwaita (so don’t expect a hugely different look to before, or panic unduly if it’s not your vibe) the Handbrake GTK4 port delivers a number of frontend and backend benefits. Mission Center Now Shows Intel GPU Usage, Available as AppImage
Intel GPU support has been added to the Linux system monitor app Mission Center. I’ve written about this GTK4/libadwaita app a few times in the past and, to plagiarise myself, the reaction to it has been off the charts (in a good way). The app is written in Rust and uses OpenGL to render the animation graphs (in an effort to ensure it doesn’t cause a spike in system usage itself).
