  16. Firefox 137 Released with Tab Groups, Address Bar Revamp + More

Tab grouping is the latest big-ticket feature to be added to Mozilla Firefox, which sees a new stable release roll out from today. Last month’s Firefox 136 update delivered long-requested support for vertical tabs, a redesigned sidebar experience giving easy access to existing and new features (including online AI chatbots), and flipped the switch on AMD video hardware decoding for Linux users. Firefox 137 is an equally big update, bringing tab grouping, a revamped search bar, and a host of other changes. Let’s take a look. 18. Flatpak 1.16 Improves USB Access, Wayland Integration & Accessibility

A new stable release of Flatpak is out with a wealth of improvements in tow. Flatpak 1.16.0 is the first stable release in the new 1.16.x series, coming more than two years after the Flatpak 1.14.x cycle began and containing features, fixes, and other work undertaken from the 1.15.x development releases. Such as? Well, the way that Flatpak apps access USB devices is improved in Flatpak 1.16.x thanks to a new input device permission. Developer Georges Basile Stavracas notes that this is “technically still a sandbox hole that should be treated with caution” but enables apps to purposefully limit the scope :sys_more_orange:

Microsoft Intune does not have any built-in options for updating installed applications on Windows computers.

If you want to update applications on managed computers, you must manually create a new version of the given application and deploy it to all computers. However, this is quite a lot of manual work, and you also have to monitor the availability of new versions of installed applications, which is another lot of manual work.

  21. Celluloid 0.28 Adds Lua Module Support, Refreshes UI

Open-source video player Celluloid saw a notable new release at the weekend, bringing a refreshed user interface (among many other changes) to users. Celluloid is a popular GTK front-end to MPV, the (exhaustingly) configurable cross-platform, command-line based media player, and makes many of MPV’s more advanced features a touch easier for users to find, try and benefit from. In Celluloid 0.28 its developers have focused on improving the UI —not hugely, don’t fret. Player controls see refinement in both regular mode, full-screen mode and if ‘floating’ controls are enabled for windowed mode – fewer buttons are shown by default: As :sys_more_orange:

  22. Celluloid Media Player Sees First Update This Year

A new version of Celluloid, an open-source media player for Linux, has been released. Celluloid (originally called GNOME MPV, albeit many moons ago) is an MPV-based media player able to leverage many of MPV’s ‘powerful playback capabilities’, but wrapped up within a more modern-looking GUI. The new Celluloid 0.27 releases serves as the the first major update to the app this year. It introduces a number of small changes aimed at improving performance, usability, and the overall appearance. New keyboard shortcuts have been added: Other changes: – In all, a decent set of buffs. 26. NewsFlash 3.0 Released with Slick New Look

A new version of Linux RSS client NewsFlash is out – and newsflash: it’s looking good! I’ve written about this app in more detail in the past so I’m going to skim over what it does suffice to say: it’s a desktop RSS reader that can connect to a number of cloud services (including Miniflux, FreshRSS, NewsBlur, and CommaFeed (new in this release) or function entirely locally. Like a great many GTK apps of late, the latest edition of NewsFlash takes full advantage of the adaptive awesome-sauce added in libadwaita 1.4 – the version at the heart of the recent :sys_more_orange:

  27. Tube Converter Gets New Backend for Improved Stability

A major update to Tube Converter is now available. If you’re not familiar with this GTK4/libadwaita app, it’s a GUI tool that makes it easy to download videos from YouTube (assuming you have permission, etc) and a number of other popular video streaming sites. Tube Converter is powered by the popular yt-dlp engine, providing a sleek, user-friendly front-end to many of that tool’s features. It lets you download multiple videos at a time in a variety of formats, including MP4 and WEBM, and audio-only MP3, FLAC, and WAV. 29. Amberol GTK Music App Gains New Features, Reduces Memory Usage

I’m a big fan of Emmanuele Bassi’s Amberol music player and the latest version, released this weekend adds a couple of pretty big new features. Before I get to those, I will point out that this GTK-based music music player has been updated numerous times since I spotlighted it back in April. UI improvements, including relocating the playlist to the left-hand side of the window, have been implemented; there’s now an option to disable UI recolouring; and comprehensive MPRIS support. Amberol 0.8 is the latest release and it lets you search for songs in the playlist/queue. You don’t need to :sys_more_orange:

  31. ‘Video Trimmer’ GTK App Adds Dark Mode, New Encode Option

Video Trimmer is a GTK app for …You don’t actually need me to explain it, right? 😉 Anyway, it recently got an update with a couple of neat improvements and I thought I’d given them a quick shout out here. Among the changes offered in Video Trimmer 0.7.0 is a new checkbox for “accurate trimming with re-encoding” to the output file selection dialog. Whenever you need a frame-perfect result you may want to make use of this option — though it can sometimes result in lower quality, so YMMV. 32. DeaDBeeF 1.10 Release Brings New Features

A new version of DeaDBeeF music player is out, bringing some cool features, FFmpeg 7 support, and a flurry of bug fixes to long-time fans. The popularity of traditional desktop music player apps has dipped considerably since the arrival of music streaming services like Spotify, which give users on-demand (and often free) access to a far larger catalogue of artists, albums and releases. Still, many people (myself included) have libraries filled with MP3 and other audio files, and do enjoy listening them. I’d wager most such users have (by now) settled on their preferred local music player; for many, that :sys_more_orange:

  34. Refine (Advanced GNOME Settings Apps) Adds More Options

A clutch of new customisation and configuration options were added to Refine, a GTK4/libadwaita app in the vein of GNOME Tweaks (but better), over the weekend. Refine is compelling due to its goal of offering the “convenience to add or remove options without touching a single line of source code” — though for a GUI option to exist it must be hooking into a variable within GNOME, i.e., it can’t magic up a toggle to make it rain glitter! A brief bit of turbulence ensnared those attempting to run the tool on Ubuntu after I covered it in early January :sys_more_orange:

  35. System Cleaner BleachBit Gets ‘Major Update’

Open source system cleaning app BleachBit has issued its first major update in over a year, bringing improved cleaning capabilities, security fixes, and myriad changes with it. For the benefit of those with dusty memories, BleachBit is a free, open source system cleaner for Windows and Linux, written in Python and GTK 3. Similar to other apps of its kind, BleachBit helps free up disk space by cleaning out caches, cookies, and other transient cruft. It can also delete files securely, wipe unallocated disk space, and squeeze Firefox’s SQLite database to improve performance. BleachBit 5.0 expands the feature set to :sys_more_orange:

  36. Mission Center 1.0 Adds New Features

Linux system monitoring app Mission Center has put out its first update in 6 months – and it’s a big one! Mission Center 1.0 adds new hardware tracking, UI tweaks, and refactors its backend to provide palapble performance improvements, boost the app’s responsiveness and minimise ‘time deviations between refresh cycles’. The latter may sound a tad dry on the ‘excitement’ scale but, arguably, it’s a big thing: a real-time monitoring app is used for, well, real-time monitoring and those tweaks ensure hardware and system process info shown is more precise. For a closer lookout the “visible” changes in this release, :sys_more_orange:

  37. Mission Center (Linux System Monitor) Now Reports Fan Info

A major new release of Mission Center, a modern system monitor app for Linux desktops, has been released. Fans of this Rust-based GTK4/libadwaita system monitoring tool (which to address the recurring elephant in the room does have a user interface inspired by—but I’d argue superior to—the Windows system monitor app) will find a lot to like in the latest update. I’m not going to recap all of this tool’s existing features in this post (I’ve covered this app a few times in the past) and instead focus on what’s changed in the latest build, released at the weekend. 38. Linux System Monitor App ‘Mission Center’ is Now Even More Useful

A new version of Mission Center, the super-slick system monitor for Linux, has been released. I’ve written about this utility a number of times before, so if you read this blog regularly you—aside from being awesome—may be familiar with it. And if you’re not? Well, you’re in for a treat. As Linux system monitors go (and there are more than a few) Mission Center is easily one of the best for fans of graphical user-interfaces who want to check their system’s CPU and RAM usage. Mission Center monitors CPU (overall or pre-thread), memory and swap usage, disk usage and transfer :sys_more_orange:

  39. Mission Center Now Shows Intel GPU Usage, Available as AppImage

Intel GPU support has been added to the Linux system monitor app Mission Center. I’ve written about this GTK4/libadwaita app a few times in the past and, to plagiarise myself, the reaction to it has been off the charts (in a good way). The app is written in Rust and uses OpenGL to render the animation graphs (in an effort to ensure it doesn’t cause a spike in system usage itself). Though on the resource usages point (as I’ve seen it come up) Mission Center isn’t the only graphical task manager-type app that does use a fair chunk of resources when :sys_more_orange:

  40. Rnote 0.12 Released with Improved Linux Note-Taking Features

A major new release of Rnote, an open-source app for taking handwritten notes, sketching out ideas and annotating documents and pictures, is out. Rnote 0.12 brings several new features, new customisation and configuration options, user experience buffs, bug fixes, and other lower-level tune-ups. For those unfamiliar with it, Rnote is a digital note-taking app built using GTK4 and Rust. It’s primarily intended to be used with stylus input (so includes pen pressure, stroke styles, button actions, etc) but supports typed text entry, shapes, importing images, etc too. Rnote offers a range of document layouts, from fixed pages to infinite canvases, :sys_more_orange:

  41. Parabolic, The Open-Source Video Download App, Issues Big Update

There are plenty of ways to download videos from well-known video streaming sites on Ubuntu but I find Parabolic the easiest, least hassle option out there. For those yet to hear about it, Parabolic is a GTK4/libadwaita app for Linux (or a Qt one for Windows) that offers what it describes as a ‘basic frontend’ to yt-dlp. All sites supported by yt-dlp are supported in this app. Paste in a URL, validate, and download. Parabolic lets you download multiple videos simultaneously and save them to popular video or audio formats; sign-in with account details (if needed) and see the credentials to :sys_more_orange:

The image editing app Pinta has a new bug-fix release out. Pinta 1.7.1 is intended as the final update in the GTK2-based series, with a GTK3 build (dubbed Pinta 1.8) said to be nearly ready for release. Building on the feature set introduced in last year’s revival release Pinta 1.7.1 adds a couple of notable improvements: Scroll canvas horizontally by holding shift and using mouse whee Swap primary and secondary palette colors by pressing x Zoom in and out without pressing the ctrl key Informative dialog when attempting to open an unsupported file format Use arrow keys to move by :sys_more_orange:
