TD 94W is now #TropicalStorm #Gaenari. It is forecast to skirt northern Taiwan by Monday morning. Gaenari (개나리) is the Korean name for the Korean goldenbell tree (Forsythia koreana).
Meanwhile, #Typhoon #Saudel may strengthen to peak winds of 130kts (150mph/241kph) and gusts up to 160kts (184mph/296kph) by Sunday night, before slamming into Okinawa on Wednesday, then rushing toward Taiwan next weekend.

There are FIVE concurrently active tropical systems and disturbances in the Western North Pacific.
Not one, not two. FIVE! The Pacific is roaring with storms.
Apart from #SevereTropicalStorm #Saudel, which is expected to be upgraded to #Typhoon soon before hitting Okinawa next Wednesday, there are one tropical depression, two tropical disturbances, and one subtropical disturbance.
Saudel is a Pohnpeian name for the title of Chief Soudelor's trusted guard or soldier.

Interesting, intense typhoon currently modeled to run over an island called "Pagan" in the Northern Marianas Islands end of the week.
(fortunately, it appears the island is currently evacuated, as it is an actively erupting volcano, lol)

That's an interesting question. I took a quick look at China in this regard.
First, I checked Typhoon Dolphin's coverage on People's Daily (CPC mouthpiece) and found *zero* mentions of climate change. It was all about "local authorities are exerting all efforts to eradicate potential risks and put people's life back to normal."
https://en.people.cn/n3/2026/0812/c90000-20487738.htmlSo that's the government's response. As to what regular people think, I found this research that suggests effect of disasters on climate concerns are miniscule and short-lived:
"Typhoon disasters did not significantly increase the frequency of public climate change discussions. (...) Extra climate change concerns provoked by typhoon disasters gradually diminished, only lasting 12 days on average."

I wrote a blog post about my experience with Typhoon Dolphin, which affected Kikaijima last week. I found some boulders transported by the storm surge, which showed the power of this storm.

Typhoon Dolphin surprised many people in Taiwan. Even though it passed relatively far, we still got a huge part of the outliers bringing heavy rain and wind.

Typhoon #13 ("dolphin") is approaching tonight. No going outside tomorrow.
Fortunately we are well prepared with food and snacks, and I got a new game for my Steam Deck. And yes, we have water, gas canisters and batteries as well, in case power goes out.

I've promised pictures of rough sea, here comes two, from the beach just below our house.
The waves in the background are 3-4m high I think. The sea is entirely white and the beach is covered with foam. It's currently hard to stand straight in the wind, but stronger one is announced for tomorrow.
Not much rain right now. It can suddenly fall strongly but stops after a few minutes.
Ferries are all cancelled, which means we are stuck here and there will be no restocking of supermarkets for a few days. Of course, people then rush to buy everything they can, which just makes things worst.
Spending the day killing time as we can and trying to reschedule things to account for this and all the other unforeseen and adverse circumstances.
