  1. @Demo318 you don't need anything for command line applications with #CrystalLang.
Or are you referring to desktop apps with a #GUI?

If you are referring to @CrystalLanguage GUI applications then @GeopJr has you covered if #Gtk is something that you'd fancy:

    ultimate-gtk4-crystal-guide.ge

There are also other possibilities and libraries but the #gtk4 guide is really nice.

    Have fun writing #GtkApps. 😉

  2. Varia is a Brand New Download Manager for Linux

Varia is a new, open-source download manager for Linux based on Aria2, a powerful command-line download utility. As the user interface is built with GTK 4 and libadwaita, Varia looks perfectly in-keeping with other modern GTK apps Ubuntu offers: Of course, it’s 2023 and we all (apparently) live in a world of blazing fast internet connections, where giant files download in seconds, and everything else gets streamed or accessed on-demand. Are dedicated desktop download managers still useful? If you need to download a large file over an unreliable internet connection (or if your computer dies mid-way through said transfer) most :sys_more_orange:

  3. NewsFlash 3.0 Released with Slick New Look

A new version of Linux RSS client NewsFlash is out – and newsflash: it’s looking good! I’ve written about this app in more detail in the past so I’m going to skim over what it does suffice to say: it’s a desktop RSS reader that can connect to a number of cloud services (including Miniflux, FreshRSS, NewsBlur, and CommaFeed (new in this release) or function entirely locally. Like a great many GTK apps of late, the latest edition of NewsFlash takes full advantage of the adaptive awesome-sauce added in libadwaita 1.4 – the version at the heart of the recent :sys_more_orange:

  4. Tube Converter Gets New Backend for Improved Stability

A major update to Tube Converter is now available. If you’re not familiar with this GTK4/libadwaita app, it’s a GUI tool that makes it easy to download videos from YouTube (assuming you have permission, etc) and a number of other popular video streaming sites. Tube Converter is powered by the popular yt-dlp engine, providing a sleek, user-friendly front-end to many of that tool’s features. It lets you download multiple videos at a time in a variety of formats, including MP4 and WEBM, and audio-only MP3, FLAC, and WAV. 10. Want to Create a Custom Ubuntu ISO? Try Cubic

I’ve never needed to create a custom Ubuntu ISO but if it’s something you want to do, check out Cubic. Cubic (which stands for “Custom Ubuntu ISO Creator”) describes itself as a “GUI wizard” to create customised Live ISO images for Ubuntu (and Debian-based Linux) distributions. To quote the project’s homepage: “Cubic permits effortless navigation through the ISO customization steps and features an integrated virtual command line environment to customize the Linux file system. You can create new customization projects or modify existing projects. Important parameters are dynamically populated with intelligent defaults to simplify the customization process.” Why would you :sys_more_orange:

  11. ‘Damask’ is a New Wallpaper App for Linux Desktops

Scores of wallpaper downloader apps exist for Linux, with most able to fetch high-quality backgrounds from a myriad of online sources and set them as your desktop wallpaper. Damask is another such app making its debut on Flathub this weekend. Built using GTK4 and following the GNOME HIG, Damask fits in perfectly on the modern Ubuntu desktop. It is able to source backgrounds from a range of popular sites, including: The rub is that can only have one of these sources enabled at any one time (i.e. so you can’t have Bing and NASA enabled, and refresh images between them). :sys_more_orange:

  12. TimeSwitch Lets Uno Schedule Restart, Shutdowns, or Commands

Want to schedule a system restart on Ubuntu? There are plenty of ways to do it, with cron probably the most well-known method. But for a more intuitive way to schedule restarts on Ubuntu check out TimeSwitch. TimeSwitch is nimble desktop app built using Python and GTK4/libadwaita. It enables you to reboot, shutdown, or suspend Ubuntu at a set date/time of your choosing. You can also use TimeSwitch to run a command(s) to schedule, or display a desktop notification. 13. Monitorets is a Cute System Monitor Widget for Linux

Sometimes things are just cute, y’know? Like, not everything made for Linux needs to plug an existential hole, break down boundaries, revolutionise computing as we know it™, etc. It’s fine for things to exist just because they’re nice to look at — and hey: if my site’s been a champion of anything these past 13 years, it’s of borderline useless tat to litter our desktops with). 19. Use ‘Ear Tag’ to Quickly Edit Audio Tags on Linux

We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to audio tag editors for Linux, but ever heard the expression ‘sometimes less is more’? It sounds silly but hey: it’s a maxim that resonates with me. Take Ear Tag, a new music tag editor for Linux written in Python and using GTK4/libadwaita. Its a simple, straightforward tool that lets you quickly edit audio tags for individual music files. Unlike fully-featured MP3 tag editors like Kid3, Tagger, or MusicBrainz Picard, Ear Tag doesn’t try to manage your entire music library. The app is accessible though a clean GTK GUI or, if you roll that way, from a command line interface instead. Something of simpler alternative to Guvcview (the ‘gold standard’ in open source webcam tools, imo), Cameratrls lets you configure almost every aspect of a webcam’s picture output, be it from a built-in potato cam or something fancier connected through USB. RSS fans rejoice for a brand-new version of NewsFlash, a GTK RSS reader for Linux desktops, is out! NewsFlash 2.0 is the biggest update to this nifty news reader for a while. It sees devs finish work on the much-anticipated GTK 4 & libadwaita port. As a result, NewsFlash looks sharper, more refined, and a lot more consistent within itself. 25. Want to Customise Libadwaita? Try ‘Gradience’

Some see the emergence of libadwaita as an intentional roadblock designed to get in the way of end-user customisation — but a new app added to Flathub this week proves otherwise. Gradience is a nimble desktop app written in Python, GTK4, and libadwaita. Using it you can change each and every colour that appears in the libadwaita theme (as well as the adw-gtk3 theme, should you have it installed). We’re talking background app colour, button colour, toggles, switches, radio boxes, and sliders; menus; dialogs; pop-overs; drop-down lists… There’s even an advanced tab where custom CSS code can be applied. 26. A Wild Metadata Cleaner for Linux Appeared!

Looking for a simple, straightforward way to remove metadata from photos, MP3s, PDF documents, and other files on Linux? The GTK-based Metadata Cleaner app on Flathub looks ideal. This Python-based GTK app lets you view and clean metadata from a variety of file types. The app is totally open source and leverages the mat2 library for its file-washing abilities. While most metadata routinely embedded in files is innocuous or banal some may reveal more information than you’d like. For example, photos taken on most cameras and smartphones embed a data about where a picture was taken, the device it was :sys_more_orange:

  28. Pitivi Video Editor Adds Beat Detection, Object Tracking + More

A new development version of Pitivi video editor is out and it boasts some major new features. The GTK-based video editor is currently in the midst of a GTK4 port as part of this year’s Google Summer of Code but, happening alongside that work, is work on adding a slew of other features that would-be content creators will be keen to try. Following OpenShot’s lead, the Pitivi 2022.06 milestone introduces object tracking. I had a bit of a play with this prior to writing this article. 31. Amberol GTK Music App Gains New Features, Reduces Memory Usage

I’m a big fan of Emmanuele Bassi’s Amberol music player and the latest version, released this weekend adds a couple of pretty big new features. Before I get to those, I will point out that this GTK-based music music player has been updated numerous times since I spotlighted it back in April. UI improvements, including relocating the playlist to the left-hand side of the window, have been implemented; there’s now an option to disable UI recolouring; and comprehensive MPRIS support. 33. Meet Paper, a New GTK Note Taking App for Linux

If you’re seeking out a note taking app for Linux you’ll want to check out Paper. Paper is a modern GTK app that pitches itself as a ‘pretty note-taking app for GNOME’ — it is! Being based around Markdown also means this app can do everything essential when writing notes, such as text formatting, adding links, highlighting sections of text, inserting code blocks, and more. Now, I class myself as more of a casual note taker. I use apps like this to squirrel away ideas I have for future posts, commands I ought to remember, and …Well, lists of He-Man :sys_more_orange:

  34. Productive Summer Planned for Pitivi Video Editor

Any list of Linux video editors would be incomplete if it didn’t include Pitivi. I have a real soft spot for this oft-overlooked GTK & GStreamer based non-linear video editor. It’s inherently stable, has a clean, ordered UI, and diligently focuses on ensuring the ‘basics’ of video editing (cutting, arranging, simple effects, simple transitions, etc) are catered for. As it’s GTK-based means Pitivi looks right at home on GNOME-based desktops. But soon it will look even nicer as a GTK4 port of Pitivi is getting underway as part of this year’s Google Summer of Code. Under the guidance of GNOME :sys_more_orange:

  35. A Nifty Dynamic Wallpaper Maker for GNOME 42

Ditch the scripts and erase the elaborate terminal commands ‘cos the following GTK4 app makes it super easy to create your own dynamic wallpapers to use in GNOME 42 (and above). Woah, woah: not the old kind of dynamic wallpapers. Awesome though those timed slideshows were/are I’m fully aware apps to create them aren’t new (though weirdly I’ve never written about any 💁🏻‍♂️). Anyway, this is a new Dynamic Wallpaper creator for GNOME 42. To recap: vanilla GNOME 42 comes with a proper standardised dark mode implementation that all modern GNOME apps respect. Among the changes offered in Video Trimmer 0.7.0 is a new checkbox for “accurate trimming with re-encoding” to the output file selection dialog.
