I get such a thrill the first time I see a new mud pit.
This time, the map had come through: Yes, here was a pit alright, obviously muddy, with duckweed floating on water in the middle
It is exactly what I had come for.
I'd made it without seeing another soul, and it was hidden enough to allay any concerns about being seen while I was swamp larking.
How deep would it be? How wet and muddy will I get? I was about to spend an hour or two finding out ❤️3/3

This adventure, I left the path and came upon not a dense thicket but a wide open forest.
It felt very public, but the path did not run through here, and thanks to the descent, anyone walking past could not see down the hill.
As I got closer I disturbed deer, foxes, squirrels and birds. Sorry, friends.
The map showed a pool of water just beyond some trees. As I approached, I could see the ground falling away in a telltale sign of a pit. (see arrow!) 2/3

I'm always brimming with nervous excitement when I set off to find a new mud hole.
I scour the 1:25k map for secluded little ponds, often in woods, because trees and other foliage are great at hiding my muddy adventures from any passers-by.
My walks from the car take me through stunningly beautiful countryside, starting on paths but often ending up in pushing through overgrown bushes in search of the wet (and hopefully muddy) area marked on the map. 1/3
