In December 2007 (I keep _very good_ records), I started trying to get Veterans of Foreign Wars (#VFW) to stop sending me junk mail. It was part of the campaign to rid my mailbox of junk mail which I documented on my blog <https://blog.kamens.us/2008/08/17/fighting-junk-mail-one-envelope-at-a-time/>.
That fight took over a year and multiple escalations before finally, in January 2009, they called me and assured me I would not receive any more junk mail from them.

Returning unwanted #creditcard marketing #junkmail with anarchist symbol on their forms & Sharpie marked with "Quit your soulsucker job!" "Capitalism kills. You're an accomplice."
Depositing them offline, via mail slots, at big banks who are sending them out. -
It's so weird that they sent this all the way to my house just so I can help them throw it away. Doesn't Deleware have any trash cans?!

I don't get much #JunkMail anymore but I just hate when I get one of those insurance junk mailers that put your name on virtually every page of the stuff because I shred anything with my name & address on it before dumping it in the trash & it's a PITA to try to find every mention of my name & address on such trash. 🤦♂️
#Spam is far preferable to junk mail because my spam folders catches most of it & I can just delete it all with a click of a mouse.
Don't know why vendors & insurance companies are still sending out junk mail anymore anyway . . . spam is much cheaper (zero cost for sending) & isn't any more likely to get results that they pay for sending out junk mailers via USPS. 🤷♂️

The first email was sent (July 3rd, 2025) by someone called "Coconut." The person who replied was "Hazel Koehler," followed by someone known as "OldCoder," and then "Jacob Hall."
The nonsense continues between "OldCoder" and "Hazel Koehler." Eventually, "Insert5StarName" joins in and seems just as put off by all of this as I am, leading them to ask not to be included.
Despite that, the back-and-forth between "OldCoder" and "Hazel Koehler" continues (July 7th, 2025).

All I can say is thank goodness for this election!
I use old envelopes to write shopping lists and other notes on. But my supply has been dwindling because I don’t get many letters any more.
Week 1 of the campaign and I already have enough supply to last me several months. -

Today's #mail (or #post, if you're of a British persuasion...) included a seminar invitation/sales flyer addressed to one of the previous owners of our house.
We've only lived here for 20 years, now.
I admire their persistence, though it seems uneconomic.

I regularly donate to a few select charities and causes. As a result, I'm inundated with junk mail requests for donations. Most of these go directly into my shredder since I don't respond to mail requests. The few causes that I support are ones I either sought out or stumbled across. Interestingly, some donation requests come with money, so now they're sending me money. I have a dollar bill and a small collection of nickels that certain organizations have sent me. Perhaps they do this so I have to open the envelope and remove the nickels before shredding it. I really, really hate junk mail.

I give regularly to certain charities and causes. The problem is I'm inundated with junk mail because of that. Another source of junk mail are organizations that I belong to who also insist on sending me a monthly magazine. All of this stuff goes straight into my shredder, unless the envelope contents are too bulky forcing be to open it before shredding the contents. The magazines, well I shred my name and address and throw the magazine away. Needless to say, it is annoying. My shredded paper bin is filling up faster every day. Don't get me started on junk email, I spend time every day deleting unsolicited email, I don't bother to read it.

Regarding my dislike of defeatism:
#defeatism is the mental equivalent of #junkmail, of #spam, of a #replyguy; you never asked for it, yet here it is, arriving because someone paid in time and effort for a self-serving waste of time.
I resent that it isn't widely recognised and treated with equivalent punishment of a spammer.
It creates a demotivated community, perhaps out of a fear that it's not "nice" to moderate it as what it is: a waste of time that's worse the longer its accepted.
