In a forest where the ground is covered with mosses and lichens, I found this tiny “antler” that had fallen from a tree!
From a tree?
It’s the Common Antler Lichen (Pseudevernia consocians), which I can find here on pine branches.

I want to try some #Tardigrade hunting on my #openflexure #microscope (built from an excellent @labcrafter kit). So bike ride today was a bimble to collect a few #mosstodon and #lichensubscribe samples to look at next week. #biketooter #opensource #openscience

This preserve is on the wet side of the Santa Cruz Mountains - in a valley that concentrates all the moist air coming off the pacific.

In other words, moss and lichen heaven!

And let's throw in a little fungus action too!

A nice spot of Gray's cup lichen from this morning.
Gray's cup lichen (Cladonia grayi) is a pixie cup lichen that looks very similar to many other cup lichen species.
Most of these Cladonia cup lichens cannot be distinguished without complicated chemical tests.
This one contains a special acid that reacts positively under UV light and turns a beautiful ice blue.

Found some rare Dark Shadow Lichen (Phaeophyscia sciastra) on a rock close to the shore of Lake Huron.
The dark blue-black lichen are surrounded by some orange Elegant Sunburst Lichen (Rusavskia elegans).
