No surprise. #ChelliePingree voted against HR556, #JaredGolden voted for it.
Protect #Wildlife from Toxic #LeadAmmunition [and #FishingTackle]
"#HR556, a bill to prevent federal agencies from prohibiting or regulating the use of toxic lead ammunition and fishing tackle on certain public lands and waters, passed the House of Representatives on March 18. However, we are not done fighting this bill! Lead ammunition is a well-documented threat, leading to illness and death for millions of birds and other wild animals each year. Since there is no safe level for lead exposure, hunters, anglers, and their families can also be harmed. Please contact your US representative about their vote on H.R. 556 and urge your senators to oppose this bill."

Public lands are #StolenLands! #LandBack! No cities for #TechBros!
"One proposed Freedom City site lies within the National #Conservation Area on the Utah–Colorado border, just west of Grand Junction, but local officials note that the area lacks adequate #water. Another target is the #Presidio, part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area, in the heart of San Francisco, a rare urban parkland that offers green space, a trail system, historic buildings and museums, and beach access. The proposal would take this public #GreenSpace and convert it into a commercial and #RealEstate #SacrificeZone, robbing the city’s residents of a priceless natural amenity.
"Then there’s Rocky Mountain Arsenal, which despite its name, is no longer a military site but a a #NationalWildlifeRefuge — one of the largest to showcase High Plains grassland ecosystems. Ten miles from downtown Denver, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service bills the area as 'a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of busy urban life where time moves at nature’s pace.' Other areas identified for potential conversion include public lands near Boise, Idaho and Bend, Oregon.
"These groups are calling for congressional legislation, because without it, the core principles of the concept would probably be illegal. Waiving the #NationalEnvironmentalPolicyAct, granting tax incentives, waiving #CivilRights regulations, and fast-tracking #NuclearPlants are on the menu, a tempting prize for the pro-development #corporatists. To address this problem, legislation has already been proposed by Tom Bell, a libertarian legal consultant and tech entrepreneur, to create a Freedom Cities Board that would be empowered to waive state and federal laws within the bounds of lands carved out to become Freedom Cities. Senator #MikeLee’s (R-UT) recently-introduced HOUSES Act, which would authorize the sale of federal public lands for housing development, has also been trumpeted by Freedom Cities promoters as a possible avenue to advance their agenda.
"It should come as no surprise that the Freedom Cities initiative has its roots in communist China, where the government created #SpecialEconomicZones (#SEZ) to attract foreign investment through deregulation and tax incentives. The most prominent of these is Shenzhen, created by Deng Xiaoping as the ultimate experiment of unregulated capitalism, a place with special tax breaks and incentives, fewer labor protections, and greater freedom from regulation than was prevalent in mainland China. Towards #Solarpunk Futures
by BrightFlame, Jan 20, 2022
"Solarpunk is a prefigurative, utopian artistic and activist movement that envisions what the future might look like if humanity solved major modern challenges like #ClimateChange, and created more #sustainable and balanced societies. As a genre and cultural aesthetic, it encompasses literature, visual art, fashion, video games, architecture, and more. Solarpunk carries many aspects of punk ideologies such as rebelliousness, #humanitarianism, #egalitarianism, animal rights, #decolonization, #AntiRacism, #AntiSexism, anti-#authoritarianism, anti-#corporatism, and anti-#consumerism. Similar to the cyberpunk genre, the big difference between the two is that in solarpunk technology and nature are in harmony with one another rather than in conflict."

So, something else that is a key element of ensuring #HumanWelfare remains in the SW range is to make sure folks are fed -- without destroying the environment! That's where #RegenerativeAgriculture , #SustainableAgriculture, #FoodForests, #CommunityGardens, etc., come into play. But #Rewilding and restoring key natural systems are also very important!
7. #Wildlife faces #extinction cascades as #ecosystems collapse.
"Vertebrate populations have declined by an average of 69 percent since 1970, with some regions experiencing losses exceeding 90 percent as habitat destruction, climate change, #pollution, and direct #exploitation combine to trigger ecosystem-wide collapse that eliminates the #biodiversity necessary to maintain stable #FoodWebs. Species extinction rates now exceed background levels by 100 to 1,000 times, representing a mass extinction event comparable to the asteroid impact that eliminated the dinosaurs but compressed into a timeframe measured in decades rather than millennia.
"The collapse of insect populations threatens #pollination services essential for agricultural production, while marine ecosystems face #acidification, warming, and #overfishing that eliminate entire trophic levels and destabilize ocean food chains supporting billions of people. Domestic animals face parallel threats as #IndustrialAgriculture concentrates genetic diversity into vulnerable #monocultures while climate change disrupts feed production and increases disease pressure on livestock populations already stressed by intensive production methods designed to maximize short-term yields rather than long-term #resilience."

#WaukeganRiver and its ravines to be subjects of study; ‘This is for the next generation and the generations to follow’
An engineering design study starting by Sept. 1 will determine what can be done with the Waukegan River system to enhance the area as it flows into #LakeMichigan.
By Steve Sadin | Lake County News-Sun
UPDATED: August 11, 2025Excerpt: "Labeled the Waukegan River Ravines Corridor Improvements Project, the effort will design strategies to stabilize eroding ravines, remove invasive species, enhance native habitat and improve recreational trails. Some trails already exist in parks that abut the ravines.
"#Waukegan Mayor Sam Cunningham, who chaired the Mayor’s Water Equity Commission of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative during his first term, reengaged with the organization when he returned to office in May. Building partnerships is important for the city, he said.
" 'Rebuilding Waukegan requires partnerships,' Cunningham said. “With me being involved again, and this in the pipeline, will only further our goal of rebuilding Waukegan. We are working with partners who can help our vision.”
"Funded by a $250,000 grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to Waukegan via the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, Altenberg said it will enhance the effort to adapt to climate change, flooding and erosion in the area.
"Daron Terfehn, a special project analyst for the city of Waukegan, said the Waukegan River is a watershed stream that brings rainwater from the ravines around the city into Lake Michigan near the harbor. The area incurred a lot of erosion in the past.
" 'A lot of things have been dumped in the ravines over the years,' Terfehn said.
" 'Everything (there) flows into Lake Michigan. It affects the salmon, the trout, everything that’s in the lake.'
"Before projects can be discussed with potential partners like the Waukegan Park District and the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission, Terfehn said the results of the study are essential. He estimates it will take approximately a year.,
" 'Much of the land is private property,' Terfehn said. 'Some belongs to the city and some to the Park District where it touches their parks. Once we have an idea of what we have to do, we can work with the Park District and stormwater management to do projects together.'
"When Cunningham began his second term, Altenberg said the mayor quickly took a leadership role again with the Great Lakes Initiative organization. He is now the co-chair of the Western United States Region which includes Illinois, #Michigan, #Wisconsin, #Minnesota and #Indiana."

#Biophilia and the need to fill our cities with #nature.
via @owgf.org , July 26, 2025
"Bringing nature back
"Our aim should be to restore as much nature as possible to both our cities and the countryside. We need to look at the quickest and easiest ways to do this and get started on those first. For me, the absolute simplest way is by removing a modest 10% of on-street parking and replacing it with native trees and plants. This would absolutely transform our cities. Streets are one of the most important parts of our cities and should be part of our commons that we all have the right to change—within reason and with full consultation."

Concern as #LightPollution encourages #birds to sing for longer, study finds
22 August 2025
"Birds around the world are singing for nearly an hour longer each day due to light pollution, a new study has shown.
"The research, to be published in the journal Science, used millions of recordings of #birdsong, including from #NewZealand's #NorthIsland.
"President of Birds New Zealand Dr Natalie Forsdick told RNZ more light meant more time for singing, building nests and feeding.
"But she said those things consumed energy and it could be reducing their overall health.
" 'It's just like with humans, if you go to bed a little bit too late, you wake up the next day feeling a little bit the worse for wear. I imagine that birds could feel that same way too, and we certainly see that it disrupts their natural cycles.'
"She said previous studies in New Zealand had shown a range of outcomes, from no effect to increased night-time predation by black-backed gulls on threatened species like banded dotterels.
"But one of the biggest concerns about light pollution in New Zealand was its effect on seabirds.
"Among juveniles, urban light pollution may be mistaken for moonlight, attracting and disorientating species like Cook's #petrel or Hutton's #shearwaters.
"This could cause birds to crash land or collide with buildings, and they may become injured or grounded in cities.
"She said people could help by turning off outside lights when they were not needed, and asking their local councils to consider more directional or dimmer lighting in public places. [I would recommended warmer lighting as well. Too much blue is unnatural!]
"Associate Professor Kristal Cain from the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Auckland said more research was needed to find out how light pollution affected survival and reproduction.
"This paper used bird song data collected by thousands of volunteers globally, and measured when birds started singing in the morning and when they stopped for the night.
"It found that in brighter areas birds started singing early and continued later into the night than in dark areas.
" 'Most of the bird song was collected in #NorthAmerica and #Europe,' Cain said. 'We still need to do similar work in the rest of the world to see how widespread these patterns really are. The manu of #Aotearoa are quite unique in many ways."
" 'Importantly, all this #ArtificialLight is not good for us either.'
"People could do things like closing curtains and planting trees in urban areas to contain some of the light."

In pictures: #SouthAmerica's 'LithiumFields' reveal the dark side of our electric future
By Maeve Campbell
Published on 01/02/2022"Lithium extraction fields in South America have been captured by an aerial photographer in stunning high definition.
"But while the images may be breathtaking to look at, they represent the dark side of our swiftly electrifying world.
"Lithium represents a route out of our reliance on #FossilFuel production. As the lightest known metal on the planet, it is now widely used in electric devices from mobile phones and laptops, to cars and aircraft.
"#LithiumIon batteries are most famous for powering electric vehicles, which are set to account for up to 60 per cent of new car sales by 2030. The battery of a #Tesla Model S, for example, uses around 12 kg of lithium.
"These batteries are the key to lightweight, rechargeable power. As it stands, demand for lithium is unprecedented and many say it is crucial in order to transition to #renewables.
"However, this doesn't come without a cost - mining the chemical element can be harmful to the environment.
"German aerial photographer Tom Hegen specialises in documenting the traces we leave on the earth's surface. His work provides an overview of places where we extract, refine and consume resources with his latest series exposing the '#LithiumTriangle.'
"This region rich with natural deposits can be found where the borders of Chile, Argentina and Bolivia meet. And roughly a quarter is stored in the Salar de Atacama salt flats in northern Chile."
