Journalist Arrested While Documenting Legally Contested #Enbridge #Line5 Construction
by #UnicornRiot, Posted on September 17, 2026
#AshlandCounty, #Wisconsin – "Police arrested video journalist and Unicorn Riot contributor #RiverAkemann while he was documenting Enbridge Line 5 construction on August 24. He was monitoring fish in a creek where Enbridge lacks necessary authorization to install its #pipeline. He received four misdemeanor charges and was released later that day. The charges include #DisorderlyConduct, #trespassing, unlawful assembly, and resisting arrest.
"Canadian oil giant Enbridge has a secretive deal with Ashland County to reimburse the sheriff’s department to act as private security. Enbridge is paying police using the #WisconsinCountiesAssociation , a lobbying group, as the pass through. The Association is not subject to state open records laws. The public won’t know how much Enbridge is paying law enforcement or how the money is being spent.
"Multiple groups are suing Canadian oil giant Enbridge for proceeding with Line 5 construction without required property interests at 49 water crossings. Plaintiffs include the #BadRiverBand of #LakeSuperiorChippewa and multiple #environmental organizations."

#Trump Isn’t Just Trolling #Canada. He’s Helping Push It Apart.
By Curtis Gillespie, Sept. 3, 2026
Excerpt: "The political pancake breakfast is one of the longstanding traditions of the Calgary Stampede, Alberta’s annual rodeo and fair. Members of the province’s governing #UnitedConservativeParty hosted one on July 2, the day after Canada Day. The far-right premier of the province, Danielle Smith, kitted out in Lone Star cowboy boots, a Stetson hat and a Texas Longhorn bolo tie, popped in. It was hard not to read the outfit as a conscious nod to Canada’s erstwhile friends south of the border, because President #Trump, #MAGA and the United States are unmistakable strands of the conversation in Alberta these days.
"After flipping some flapjacks, the premier addressed the crowd, making sure to toss a pancake to her base by saying that immigrants — or 'newcomers,' as she put it — had caused government spending to skyrocket. She reminded people that the Stampede is an expression of bedrock Albertan values: grit, determination and getting back in the saddle. The implied contrast was with the hopeless mandarins in Ottawa who can’t be expected to know anything about such matters.
"It would have been a typical Stampede breakfast were it not for the sightings of a formerly reclusive political creature: the baldfaced #AlbertaSeparatist, a breed apart from the more common species, the alienated Westerner. They came in groups like #Albertans4Freedom and #UnitedAlbertaFlags, which advocate Alberta seceding from Canada to become an independent #JudeoChristianNation.
"They encouraged #Albertans to vote yes on Oct. 19 to a referendum question asking whether Alberta should start down the road to separation, an impulse that the Trump-friendly Ms. Smith — without explicitly endorsing separation — has given new life to by pushing for the referendum question to be on the ballot."

By Thomson Reuters Feb 18, 2026 | 8:35 AM
Feb 18 (Reuters) – "Rio Tinto said on Wednesday it has gained majority control of Canada’s Nemaska Lithium, advancing its push to build an integrated lithium business in #Quebec.
"The Anglo-Australian miner now holds a 53.9% stake in the lithium producer and will assume direct management, while the Government of Quebec holds 46.1%.
"Rio Tinto is seeking to establish a fully integrated lithium supply chain in Quebec, from mining raw ore to chemical processing, to supply the North American electric vehicle market.
"Rio Tinto and the eastern Canadian province, through its economic development agency Investissement Quebec, have been investing in Nemaska Lithium since March 2025.
"The partners will continue to fund the project, including the #LithiumHydroxide plant in #Becancour, with first production expected in 2028, it added.
"Quebec will invest up to an additional $200 million in Nemaska Lithium through share subscriptions, the company said, on top of an investment of more than $300 million by Rio Tinto in 2026 to further develop its lithium sector in the province.
"Through its acquisition of #Arcadium in March 2025, Rio Tinto acquired a 50% interest in Nemaska Lithium, which includes the lithium hydroxide plant in Becancour, Quebec, and the #Whabouchi spodumene mine in the #EeyouIstchee #JamesBay region of Quebec."

They Are Dying. And #Canada Is Watching.
#Mikisew #Cree’s own health study confirms what the community has always known: the #OilSands are killing them. If governments and industry don’t act, they say they will shut it all down.
by Brandi Morin
Apr 13, 2026Excerpt: "The findings confirmed what this community has carried in their grief, in their graveyards, for generations: cancer rates in Fort Chipewyan are at least 25 percent higher than the rest of Alberta. Since 1993, there have been 149 documented cases — and that number, Tuccaro says, is a gross underestimate. People who leave the community for treatment are no longer counted in local statistics. Factor those in, and the real number for Mikisew Cree members alone, he estimates, is closer to 250 to 300."

Most #CriticalMinerals are on #IndigenousLands. Will miners respect #TribalSovereignty?
by Taylar Dawn Stagner, March 26, 2025
"#Mining — whether for #FossilFuels or, increasingly, the critical minerals in high demand today — has a long history of perpetuating violence against #IndigenousPeople. Forcibly removing tribal communities to get to natural resources tied to their homelands has been the rule, not the exception, for centuries.
"Today, more than half of the mineral deposits needed for a global energy transition — including #lithium, #cobalt, #copper, and #nickel to make things like #batteries and #SolarPanels — are found near or beneath Indigenous lands.
"In 2007, the United Nations adopted a resolution called the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples [#UNDRIP] that included the right to free, prior, and informed consent to the use of their lands, a concept known as #FPIC. This principle protects #IndigenousPeoples from being forcibly relocated, provides suitable avenues for redress of past injustices, and gives tribes and communities the right to consent to — and the right to refuse — #extractive industry projects like #mining.
"There’s a lot at stake: When followed, FPIC promises a process that gives Indigenous peoples a voice in how their homelands are used, as well as the right to say no to development altogether. And when it’s not, which is the vast majority of the time, #TribalCommunities are further #disenfranchised, facing #violence and #ForcedRelocation as their #sovereignty and rights are ignored.
"There are an estimated 5,000 tribal communities around the world, encompassing roughly 476 million people across 90 countries, according to the U.N. Different tribes have different opinions on mining, but rarely is their legal right to refuse extraction projects recognized, even under the 2007 declaration.
"Grist talked with five experts to better understand what free, prior, and informed consent should look like in this new era of mineral extraction. Their responses have been edited for length and clarity."

For #Indigenous communities in ‘#Alberta,’ the #OilIndustry has left an ugly stain
Facing #OilSpills, evacuations and #illness — nations downstream of the #OilSands grieve their way of life, as the #corporations polluting their water get richer
By Brandi Morin, December 7, 2023
Excerpt: "The rush of the wind and sprays of water add to the thrill as Jason Castor guides his riverboat through a stretch of #LakeAthabasca near #FortChipewyan, in #Treaty8 territories. If he slows down, his boat could get stuck in the mud or even flip over because the water levels in this spot are remarkably low. He steers around buoys, dodges logs and other debris while accelerating to the mouth of the channel, which he knows should be deep enough to navigate at an average speed.
"While trawling his boat further down the river, Castor points to odd-looking clusters resembling dirty foam floating by.
" 'There’s just a slurry of a foam that looks like #oil or some kind of #chemical in there,' says Castor, a 42-year-old father, construction business owner and member of the #AthabascaChipewyan #FirstNation (#ACFN).
"He’s been a traditional hunter, trapper and fisherman for nearly 20 years and has documented strange changes in the water, the land and animals.
"Something’s going on in the river, he says.
" 'They say that it’s natural, well, I know that that’s not natural because I’ve been on the river my whole life,' he explains as he points to brown and #WhiteFoam, #OilSheens and other discoloured formations floating on the river.
"Nowadays, it’s risky to navigate these waterways because of industrial intakes like the #WACBennettDam to the west in B.C.; the #AlbertaOilSands just up the river and impacts from #ClimateChange.
"The #PeaceAthabascaDelta is the second-largest #freshwater delta in the world.
"The #AthabascaRiver, and the larger delta, also sit atop the world’s largest known reservoir of #CrudeBitumen.
"The industry that has sprung up around it drives Alberta’s and Canada’s economy, employing about 138,000 people. In 2021, crude bitumen production totaled approximately 3.3 million barrels per day. The oil sands energy sector including oil sands, conventional #OilAndGas, mining and quarrying is valued at about $18 billion.
"But while Canada prospers off the oil sands industry, #Indigenous communities downstream are dealing with its #toxic impacts.
"Not only are the water levels fluctuating, but the health of the water flowing through the Athabasca River is jeopardized."

#OnionLake #CreeNation to proceed with its legal challenge of #Alberta sovereignty act
By Lisa Johnson The Canadian Press, May 15, 2025
EDMONTON - "Alberta’s bill lowering the bar for a separation referendum has spurred a #FirstNation to push ahead with a legal challenge against the premier’s flagship sovereignty act.
"Danielle Smith has said her Alberta Sovereignty Within a United Canada Act is needed to push back on what the province believes is unconstitutional federal encroachment into provincial jurisdiction.
"But Onion Lake Cree Nation Chief #HenryLewis said that law has always been about undermining federal authority and asserting provincial control, which goes against his community’s #Treaty6 relationship with the Crown." 'I want to respectfully remind the premier that this land that we stand on today is #Treaty land and is not yours to take or make sweeping decisions about,” he said at a news conference in Edmonton on Thursday.
"He announced the legal challenge is moving forward a day after Smith’s government passed a bill significantly lowering the threshold for citizens to prompt a referendum, including one on seceding from Canada."

Front Burner is a daily CBC news podcast that generally focuses on stories relevant to Canada. Today they had Heidy Khlaaf, ex of OpenAI and Trail of Bits and currently at the AI Now Institute, talking about the application of AI to autonomous weapon systems. As you might guess, t's not a pretty story. But it's actually worse than I had imagined. #CanadaPol #AI

The UN or the G7 or some such organization should hold a big conference with the heads of state of as many countries as possible attending.
Invite Dipshit Donnie, too.
But when he gets there, he finds it's just all the other heads of state sitting around telling stories about just how stupid/naive/credulous/ignorant/crass/illiterate/somnolent/flatulent/etc Donnie is. Broadcast live. Keep one camera on Donnie full-time so he doesn't just stalk out.
He'll have an #aneurysm, OR he'll hide in shame for the rest of his miserable life. Either works for me.
