Le dévot reçoit la beauté dans la mesure où il se perd lui-même. Pourtant, le nibbāna (nirvāna, en sanskrit) ne donne rien. Il est ce qu’il est, au-delà de l’être et du non-être. Les rayons du soleil brillent pour tous, en sont illuminés ceux qui ouvrent les volets de leur esprit. Ici encore le langage nous trompe. Une phrase comme « le soleil brille » semble vouloir dire qu’un sujet – le soleil – se mettrait à briller par un acte réfléchi et volontaire. En réalité, il n’y a ni sujet ni attribut. « Ça brille », devrait-on dire, ou mieux encore, « ça soleille ».

Je m’intéresse à ces aspects subtils de la psychologie expérimentale bouddhiste qu’on appelle les nimitta ou signes de concentration. Il y en a trois : le parikamma-nimitta, ou signe préparatoire, qui n’est autre que l’objet de concentration lui-même, par exemple la sensation physique du souffle située au niveau des narines ; l’uggaha-nimitta, ou signe d’apprentissage, qui est une image mentale du signe préparatoire. Par exemple, l’image réflexe de la sensation du souffle, ou bien celle d’une pièce de soie blanche ou d’autres couleurs ou formes. Il est à noter que différents signes peuvent apparaître à différentes personnes selon leurs différentes perceptions. Il est donc vain de vouloir obtenir le même signe qu’une autre personne, si elle venait à nous le décrire, ce qui est d’ailleurs fortement déconseillé en dehors des entretiens individualisés avec son instructeur ; enfin le patibhāga-nimitta, ou signe réfléchi, qui est une image mentale très claire et lumineuse pouvant ressembler, selon les textes anciens, « à l’étoile du soir, un rubis circulaire, une perle, ou encore au disque de la lune ». Ici encore, les différentes formes de nimitta ne peuvent être reproduites en raison des différentes perceptions des personnes, mais aussi du changement de perception se produisant chez la même personne. Tandis que le signe d’apprentissage n’est pas d’une grande clarté, dit Pa-Auk, le signe réfléchi est, quant à lui, parfaitement lumineux.
