    At Home

This past week has been insane. We did get our new range last Friday, and it’s working great. It’s taking a little bit to adjust and figure out how hot all the burners and the oven burn, but we haven’t scorched anything. Yet. The weekend was really busy, and we didn’t even get to everything we had planned because…

We got kittens. Two kittens. One gray and white bicolor and the other completely black except a little white tuft on her chest. They’re both just under 3 months, and I’m a little surprised the rescue was adopting them out considering our first kitty couldn’t be adopted until she was 3 months, but the only other options were 4 months, which my husband deemed too old. So we have two kittens wrecking havoc, because we were fully unprepared for more than one kitten, making introducing them to each other an insane adventure in an entirely unequipped household, especially with two excitable children. Fortunately, they’ve been acclimating well to their new home and, slowly, to each other, and the human kids are doing well with them. The gray one is super playful and doesn’t seem to like to sleep more than a half hour at a time while the black one will happily stretch out on the couch for hours.

Oh, and we have a fire burning to our west. We’re in no danger, but the air quality has been poor, and my daughter’s school has been suffering the brunt of it. It’s sometimes smelled like barbecue when I’ve gone to pick her up. It’s been messing with everyone’s allergies and eyes, so I hope they managed to put it out soon.

    What I’ve Read

I finally finished All Hail Chaos and, somehow, amidst all the chaos in my own life, managed to get my review up. I liked it better than the first book, but not all of the subplots captured my attention and it felt a little chaotic at times.

In progress: The Dawn Throne by Tara Sim

This is going slowly because of kittens. I feel like I’ve spent the entire trilogy trying to fall in love with the characters, but I kind of feel like they’re making it difficult for me. They go through so much, and yet they also sometimes just act like spoiled rich kids stuck in their own plots. I like them enough on their own, but, together, they kind of lack charm. But I’m not very far into the book, so we’ll see how it progresses.

    Kids’ Reading Corner

The 6th Grader: I think he gave up on reading The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, but I’m reading it to him. I’ve had to explain a few things to him, and he just gives me weird looks, but maybe he’ll be inclined to pick it up when he’s older.

The 3rd Grader: I think she started reading the Stick Cat book I got her from the library, but her eyes have been suffering thanks to the fire, so she’s been more inclined to turn off her lights and go to sleep lately. She did spend a couple of nights reading to the cats because they were in her room, which was cute.

    The Kitchen

I had planned on baking. My daughter and I were going to try something with apples and cinnamon, but then we got the kittens and chaos ensued.

    The Writing Lounge

I’m coming up on one month since I sent out my first query and I’m kind of not feeling like I’m in the trenches yet. Then again, the past few weeks have been busy, what with planning my daughter’s birthday party and then getting kittens. As chaotic as they’ve been, they’ve been great at keeping my mind off, well, everything, actually. Which isn’t always a good thing. And it also means I’ve done no writing.

    Featured Posts From the Cafe

I shared my thoughts on fairy tale retellings on Monday, mostly because it was already scheduled. I’m surprised I managed to get my review for All Hail Chaos by Sarah Rees Brennan up yesterday. I don’t know how next week will go.

Blog Stats and Other Interesting Things

As much fun as this section has been, I’ve decided to retire it for the time being because 1) it’s kind of a pain to do and 2) I’m currently in my “I don’t really care about stats” phase (I cycle back and forth, so this section might return one day).

    Featured Blog Post

Each week I aim to share my favorite post of the week. But, as my brain is increasingly cluttered with manuscript-related things and I’m getting increasingly sidetracked by my backyard as it’s gone from dead to wildflowery to I’m worried it’s overgrowing, I’ll be taking a break from this section.

If you would be so kind, one of my best friends is an artist and recently opened her online store. If you like LGBTQ art, take a look: Sunlight & Sky.

As much fun as this section has been, I’ve decided to retire it for the time being because 1) it’s kind of a pain to do and 2) I’m currently in my “I don’t really care about stats” phase (I cycle back and forth, so this section might return one day).
