"Never forget that adaptability outranks experience." - Futurist Jim Carroll
--
Futurist Jim Carroll is writing a series, The Art of the Infinite Pivot, based on 36 lessons from his 36 years as a solo entrepreneur, working as a nomadic worker in the global freelance economy. The series is unfolding here, and at pivot.jimcarroll.com.
--The future doesn't care about your resume.
It only cares about your ability to adapt.
Don't let your experience become the baggage that holds you back.
If you think about our world of rapid change, you can easily appreciate that experience is a double-edged sword. It gives you the confidence to go forward, but it can also hold you back by encouraging you to be complacent, trying the 'same old things' instead of trying new things. In my 36-year voyage, I’ve come to realize that the more you "know" about how something works, the harder it is to see how it is about to change.
Think about it this way: the experience that you have in adapting to change has become more important than experience itself.
What does this mean? To master the art of the infinite pivot, you have to be willing to fire yourself as an expert every few years and reinvent yourself. You need to be willing to trade your "Expert" badge for a "Beginner" badge, admitting that the knowledge that made you successful yesterday might be the very thing that makes you obsolete tomorrow.
This is not only a personal skill but also the ultimate test for any leader in an era of disruptive change. Most organizations are run by experts who are conditioned to protect their "proven" success. When disruption occurs, these experts are often the first to dismiss it, discount it, and label it as unimportant because it threatens their identity, status, and power. They aren't just protecting the business; they are protecting their status.
To master the Infinite Pivot, you must be willing to unlearn and relearn. You have to be comfortable being the student in a room full of people who have less "experience" but more "adaptability" than you do.
The future rewards your ability to learn, not your ability to remember.
Don’t let your years of experience become years of baggage!
--
Futurist Jim Carroll is always trying to learn new stuff, knowing that it is better to know what you don't know than to try to rely on what you do know.

"Anyone can find an excuse to stand still. Make it your life's work to find the reasons to move." - Futurist Jim Carroll
As a species, it seems we are engineered to stand still (or move back) rather than forward.
I was thinking about that yesterday — how easy it is to make excuses to avoid taking action.
I certainly do this, even though I often feature this issue when I’m speaking to my clients about innovation.
Right now, I’ve spent a few weeks — literally — getting ready to launch another blog series. This one is called: “36 LESSONS: THE ART OF THE INFINITE CAREER PIVOT.” It’s based on a list I wrote last November on the 35th anniversary of leaving the corporate workforce, starting my own company, and working from home.
I didn't write it beyond the original list. Other projects got in the way; client projects surfaced; I kept looking for the right design for the daily posts as well as the website that would go with it; my spinal injury intervened; and most importantly, family time, including with my new grandson, took over.
And over the last few months, I’ve managed to find every excuse in the book not to get going. Heck, I was going to start it today, but, well, I didn’t.
So here we are! I’m writing a post about making excuses because I needed an excuse as to why I have yet to get it going!
So I’ll start it tomorrow. It’s good!
The same thing happens in the corporate space, particularly during geopolitical tensions. Right now, companies are postponing projects, abandoning initiatives, and hunkering down into inaction. There is a crazy amount of uncertainty with the economy, war, global tensions, politics — and so leaders are doing the easiest thing of all: nothing.
And that’s exactly why I wrote Dancing in the Rain — the subtitle, How Bold Leaders Grow Stronger in Stormy Times, provides the exact antidote to indecision. (Grab it via dancing.jimcarroll.com!)
It’s really quite simple.
Stop stopping.
Start moving.

Futurist Jim Carroll tries to practice the innovation lessons he shares with his clients. He often fails at this.

A quotation from Marcus Aurelius
There is a doom inexorable and a law inviolable, or there is a providence that can be merciful, or else there is a chaos that is purposeless and ungoverned. If a resistless fate, why try to struggle against it? If a providence willing to show mercy, do your best to deserve its divine succour. If a chaos undirected, give thanks that amid such stormy seas you have within you a mind at the helm.

"Resilience is rarely a solo endeavor." - Futurist Jim Carroll
Sometimes it involves combining two working parts to build one functioning whole!
Just when I thought I had cornered the market on orthopedic drama in our household, the universe had second thoughts.
It turns out my wife has now torn her Achilles, meaning she is heading into a walking boot or cast just as I’m getting my walking stride back.
We have officially become a two-person logistics puzzle!
In the corporate world, I talk about "agile teams" and "complementary capabilities." Well, I am now living it. I have the legs, but still need to be cautious with the bending or the lifting. She has the upper body strength and the organizational skills, but is on crutches until she gets fitted with the proper walking boot.
Separately, we are both compromised. Together, if we coordinate our movements like a synchronized swimming team, we make one fully functional human being.
How's your 2026 going so far?
The lesson? We often think of resilience as "toughing it out alone." But real resilience—whether in a marriage or a company—is often about the humility to say, "I am the legs, you are the strategy." It’s about auditing your collective assets and realizing that while neither of you is 100%, together you can still move the needle forward.
True partnership is about combining the pieces that still work to build one functioning unit!
It’s going to be a long winter, but at least we know we can't run away from our circumstances. (Cue LOL!)
Onwards!
(Carefully).

"Sometimes, you can’t control your circumstances, but you can control your thoughts!" - Futurist Jim Carroll
Ultimately, the way you approach your circumstances defines how the circumstances turn out!
This is the last post on my situation, but I must say - something like this certainly gives you a chance to think!
I’ve spent a lot of time this week looking at my "backward" stats about my fitness and activities —the 884,000 pounds lifted at the gym during the year, the 112 rounds of golf I carded in 2025, and the top-tier cardio recovery stats I've built up.
It’s easy to look at that data and feel robbed by my current physical limits. But I’ve realized that the most important metric isn't on my Apple Watch. It’s the "Resilience Score" in my head. With all this unique downtime, I’ve learned that true strength isn’t just about what your body can do. It’s about what your mind can do once you begin shifting your thinking.
I'm working so hard every day not to focus on what I can't do today - but what I can do tomorrow if I don't do those things today!
And that's a subtle but significant mindspace shift!
As a futurist, I usually obsess over the "next big thing." But this injury has forced me to realize that you can’t sprint into the future if your chassis is broken. I’ve shifted my control panel from "frustration" to "preparation," by shifting my mindset.
I’m not sitting here waiting for my bones to heal; I am actively moving my mind into where it needs to be for longer terms success. I’m trading the dopamine of a ski run today for the guarantee of a tee time at St. Andrews in April!
The circumstance is a pause; the mindset is a pivot.
So while i can't control the circumstances I find myself in, I can certainly control the thinking around what I can do with them!
I think there is some powerful guidance in that line of thought that we can apply to just about any type of circumstance!
Onwards!

"Ten Great Words for 2026: Gratitude. Respect. Serenity. Authenticity. Connection. Trust. Patience. Adaptability. Positivity. Hope!" - Futurist Jim Carroll
Each year, since 2006, I have started the year with my 10 Great Words list.
The original list became a part of my closing stage routine and is still shared widely by folks when they discover it. It's over at 10greatwords.jimcarroll.com.
It's a set of ideas that define my thinking, attitudes, approach to life, and what I intend to carry as the core mindset as I approach each new year.
My list this year has been defined and influenced by two major events in my life - the arrival of my first grandchild, Mason James, which has truly been transformative, and a spinal injury that has, for lack of a better word, forever changed my relationship with gravity!
My grandchild! I can't begin to describe how this singular event can cause you to think of your world in a new and different way! My wife and I are overwhelmed with the sheer joy, exuberance, and emotional roller coaster that is the experience. It is truly life-changing - in ways that I don't even yet know I can describe. 2026 should be wonderful! All I need at this moment in my life is his sweet smile, and my heart is full.
The second was the awful fall on ice in late November as I walked down some hard granite steps at our ski chalet. I've been sidelined from the ski season for the year, an activity that has defined my winter for the last 25 years. It's a spinal injury, and I rest daily in knowing that I am lucky; it could have been so much worse. A life event like this certainly gets you thinking! Did you know it's 78 days till spring, 95 days till my tee time at the Old Course in St. Andrews, and 103 days till my pool opens?
Not that I'm waiting for winter to end or anything!
Life events like these define your character, shape your thinking, and certainly outline your approach to your day.
They've also shaped the choice of the words I'm going to carry with me into 2026.
Here's why they matter.

Folks wanted cheaper egThrow out the roadmap. Build a portfolio of instant pivots instead.” - Futurist Jim Carroll
---
Futurist Jim Carroll is writing his end-of-2025 / introduction-to-2026 series, 26 Principles for 2026. You can follow along at 2026.jimcarroll.com. He welcomes your comments.
---Build options, not plans!
We are on Day 19 of this series and have covered a lot of ground. We’ve established the necessary foundation: the future is terrifyingly fast (Day 16), your only defense is being (Day 17), and you must adopt an "antifragile" mindset to feed on the chaos (Day 18).
The question today is this: How do you plan when you can’t predict? Or when what you predict doesn't happen because something else does. Or a trend is too complex
Welcome to the idea of Optionality Architecture. Instead of building a plan, build a series of pivots, so that you are ready for whatever the hell happens!
Think about this idea. Planning is dead. Reacting with prebuilt plans is in.
Here's why.
In a linear world, the five-year plan was the gold standard. It was a single, rigid path based on the comforting (but false) assumption that the future would look mostly like the past. Strategy was about prediction and sticking to pre-determined plans.
A five-year plan today? Laughable! In an exponential world, a single, fixed plan is a strategic liability. The moment you commit to one path, a technology curve goes vertical, or a Black Swan event lands. The old strategy instantly becomes an anchor that guarantees you miss the shift.
The winning move is to stop worshipping the plan and start architecting the possible.
That's why the new principle you must master for 2026 and beyond is Optionality Architecture.
Beyond being a cool phrase that rolls off your tongue, it's a critical survival and success strategy you need to go forward.
To get it, you must understand what it is.
The most successful individuals and organizations in an exponential world don't just have options. They systematically construct portfolios of options.
Keep reading - learn your options!

One nit: I view our namesake oaks as an asset, not a liability! We face far bigger fire risk from non-native stuff such as fan palms and arundo grasses.

"In a world of structure, be the organized chaos!" - Futurist Jim Carroll
Is it OK to be helplessly, hopelessly disorganized?
Maybe so.
What got me thinking about this was an article I came across about the importance of the ability to see clarity through chaos. That's certainly a powerful capability right about now.
And it brought to mind this situation.
Picture this - you've had a wonderful baby shower for one of your sons and his wife. It's time to return the rental chairs. Two SUVs are enlisted in the process.
And unbeknownst to me, my wife snapped two photos once the loading was done.
There was hers: nicely stacked, neatly organized, structured to perfection. No wonder - she's a first-generation German Canadian, and has "Organized" as her middle name.
Then there was mine.
I guess that's how my mind works. Maybe that's why I'm so creative. I have little patience for structure, little time for routine, and precious little time to stack chairs properly. Who defines 'properly' anyways?
It was, by any reasonable standard, chaos.
But here’s the thing: They all fit.
And maybe that's the power of "organized chaos."
My wife’s method was elegant and beautiful; it’s ideal for a stable, predictable system. My method, however, was not.
It wasn't random—I knew where the space was and I used it. The result was the same: the job got done, perhaps even faster.
And here's the point - throughout our lives, we are constantly pushed into a "world of structure." We have rigid job descriptions, linear career paths, and step-by-step instructions for everything. These structures are essential for stability, but they can be paralyzing when the world demands speed and adaptability.
And right now, the world demands speed and adaptability. It's chaos out there, folks!
Organized chaos is the ability to maintain a clear objective while allowing the process to be messy, flexible, and dynamic.
It’s the startup team that rapidly pivots, not the corporate committee that takes three months to schedule a meeting.
It’s the artist whose studio is a beautiful disaster, but who can instantly locate the right tool or brush.
It's the problem-solver who breaks the established rules to achieve the established goal.
It's the guy who stacks chairs in an SUV without thought, but gets the job done.
When rigid systems inevitably fail or slow down, don't try to force a perfect stack. Know your destination, and then let your process be the slightly messy, highly dynamic, and profoundly effective power of organized chaos.
You'll be surprised how much you can fit in the trunk when you stop worrying about making it look pretty.
