  1. Niccolo Machiavelli (May 3, 1469 – June 21, 1527) wrote The Prince after prison, torture, and exile, with the cold clarity of someone who had seen power from the inside.

This is not just a book about rulers but about fear, ambition, loyalty, betrayal, and the dangerous people who believe they are born to command others.

I can see the merit of your argument.

People on the Italian mainland always seem to have been prone to deception and back-stabbing, it seems...Prime literary examples, #ColleenMcCullough's #Cesar saga and #ThePrince by #Macchiavelli (not to mention the #Borghias, for that matter.)

I'd still argue that THEM not knowing what was about to happen, did not make it "sudden." It needn't have been. They were apparently in ignorance of many martial principles,...

  4. Finished reading 'The Prince'.

    Here's my take:

Holds very less significance in the contemporary world (though one can assume similarities with current politics). Nonetheless, a good read to understand the political philosophy of the medieval times.

  5. The Prince by Abigail Thorn is really great. Serious and funny, playful and heartfelt.

The premise is that our protagonists find themselves trapped in a Shakespearean Theatrical Universe and need to rescue themselves and maybe help some of the characters along the way.

  6. What if we reinterpreted #thePrince by #Macchiavelli as descriptive rather than normative, and treated it (to borrow a phrase from @cydharrell in her frequent refrain about #cyberpunk) as a warning, not a manual.

  7. I watched Abigail Thorn's The Prince on Nebula the other day, it was really good. :)

  8. Had some down time at work tonight and I watched “The Prince” by Abigail Thorn.

Damn, that play brought me to tears! The metaphor of “the play” was definitely not lost on me.

If you can, I highly recommend watching it.

Being an extract of a book, even this long article cannot live up to all expectations.

For me, it deepened the understanding of a generally known piece of the #PRC's #history.
What helped me a great deal in this was the #TheEconomist's podcast series on #XiJinping #ThePrince: economist.com/theprincepod.

I think introspective 4 readers would B significantly augmented, if there were just 2 people, maybe even two fictitious characters, telling their "own" personal story.

  10. Endlessly fascinating podcast: The Prince, by The Economist

"The Prince is the epic story of Mr Xi’s turbulent past, how he has changed China and how he is trying to change the world."
