GANDHI’S political actions in INDIA between 1922 and 1930 were primarily focused on rebuilding the nationalist movement after the suspension of the NON-COOPERATION MOVEMENT in 1922 after CHAURI CHAURA incident.That was a blow on many of his followers. GANDHI himself was arrested on March 10, 1922. He was tried for sedition, and sentenced for six years’ imprisonment. However, he was released in February 1924 on medical ground, after undergoing surgery for appendicitis. In his absence, the INDIAN NATIONAL CONGRESS had split into two factions ➖one led by CHITTARANJAN DAS and MOTI LAL NEHRU, who favoured the entry of party into legislature, and other under CHAKRAVARTI RAJAGOPALACHARI and SARDAR VALLABHBHAI JHAVERBHAI PTEL, who opposed such move vehemently. Unity between HINDUS and MUSLIMS, seen during NON-COOPERATION MOVEMENT, had also dissolved. Finally after a serious of outbreak of communal unrest, GANDHI undertook a three-week fast in the autumn of 1924 to arouse the feelings of nonviolence among the people. At the same time, he was named in December 1924 as the President of the INDIAN NATIONAL CONGRESS and he served it for a year. In 1927, the BRITISH government appointed a Constitutional Reform Commission under Sir JOHN SIMON, a prominent ENGLISH lawyer and politician, which didn’t contain any INDIAN at all.The INDIAN NATIONAL CONGRESS and other political parties boycotted the Commission for that. In December 1928, GANDHI put forth the crucial resolution in the CALCUTTA session of the INDIAN NATIONAL CONGRESS demanding Dominion Status for INDIA from the BRITISH government within a year, as there arose a nationwide nonviolent compaign for complete independence.

On March 12, 1930, GANDHI decided to demonstrate against the increasingly repressive Salt Act by marching from his SABARMATI ASHRAM in AHMEDABAD to the town of DANDI on the coast of ARBIAN SEA. He set out on foot with several dozen followers on March 12, 1930. After each day march, the group stayed in different villages along the route. In each village, heavy crowd assembled to listen to GANDHI’S speech on unfair taxation on Salt.To him, it was a tax on poor people. As we know, Salt production and distribution in INDIA had long been a lucrative monopoly of the BRITISH.Through a series of laws, INDIANS were prohibited from producing and selling Salt independently. INDIANS were required to buy expensive heavily taxed imported SALT.This affected great majority of INDIANS. As a result, hundreds of people joined the core group of followers of GANDHI in route, who were on the way to sea.The entourage reached DANDI after a journey of some 385 km on April 5. And on the morning of April 6, GANDHI and his followers picked up handful of Salt along the sea shore.Thus, GANDHI and his followers technically and symbolically produced Salt and broke Salt Laws.

No arrests were made on that day. GANDHI continued his SATYAGRAHA against the Salt Tax for the next two months. He urged INDIANS to break the Salt Laws by committing act of civil disobedience. Thousands of people were arrested and imprisoned. JAWAHARLAL NEHRU (who later became the first Prime Minister of INDIA) was arrested in the month of April and GANDHI himself in early May 1930. News of GANDHI’S detention spread like a wildfire. Now tens of thousands more people joined the ongoing SATYAGRAHA against the Salt Laws. On May 21, 1930, under the leadership of SAROJINI NAIDU (a great poet), a group of people marched to make and break Salt Laws. More than 2,500 peaceful marchers were attacked and beaten by the police. By the end of 1930, more than 60,000 people were put behind the bars. GANDHI was released from custody in January 1931. A negotiation between GANDHI and LORD IRWIN (the then Viceroy of INDIA) went on as to how to end SATYAGRAHA. A truce subsequently was declared.The GANDHI -IRWIN PACT was signed on March 1930. It marked the end of Civil Disobedience Movement in INDIA against the BRITISH RAJ.The movement had generated worldwide publicity. As per the Pact, GANDHI pledged to give up the SATYAGRAHA compaign, and LORD IRWIN agreed to release those who had been imprisoned during the movement. And INDIANS were allowed to make Salt for domestic uses.

CHAMPARAN SATYAGRAHA OF 1917
The CHAMPARAN SATYAGRAHA of 1917 was the first SATYAGRAHA MOVEMENT led by MAHATMA GANDHI during the NATIONAL MOVEMENT in INDIA. CHAMPARAN was a district of BIHAR (INDIA). Farmers’ uprising took place there during the BRITISH RAJ in INDIA.The farmers were protesting against the atrocities hurled upon them by the BRITISH INDIGO PLNTERS, who compelled them to grow Indigo compulsorily in 3 katha of lands out of every 20 Kathas, for which they were getting very little payment.This system was called TEENKATHI system. Somewhere there existed PANCHKATHIA system, in which 5 Kathas out of 20 Kathas of lands were used for growing Indigo. Indigo was used for making dye. GANDHI had returned from SOUTH AFRICA in 1915. He saw peasants in Northern INDIA were being oppresed by Indigo planters. He wanted to apply the same tactics, which he had already applied in SOUTH AFRICA to organise mass uprising by people to protest against injustice. GANDHI visited CHAMPARAN on the invitation of a local farmers whose name was RAJ KUMAR SHUKLA.To investigate the grievances of farmers, MAHATMA GANDHI started SATYAGRAHA MOVEMENT in CHAMPARAN. Prominent figures of that time like RAJENDRA PRASAD, MAZHAR ul-HAQ, MAHADEO DESAI, NARHARI PAREKH and J. B. KRIPALANI joined the movement. He preferred to face punishment.This was his first act of passive resistance on INDIAN soil. A Government Commission of Inquiry, in which he was also a member, was set up to enquire into the plight of the farmers in CHAMPARAN. It resulted in a negotiated settlement.This agreement compelled the planters to reimburse the peasants 25% of unlawful collected funds. It also led to the dismantling of the exploitative TEENKATHI system and within a decade, planters left the area.
MAHATMA GANDHI DURING CHAMPARAN SATYAGRAHA MOVEMENTTECHNIQUES OF SATYAGRAHA
SATYAGRAHA (सत्याग्रह) is a SANSKRIT word. Etymologically speaking, it is made up of two words SANSKRIT words : 1. STYA (means ‘truth’) ; and 3. AGRAHA (means ‘insistence’). So, SATYAGRAHA means “holding firmly on truth”. It is a particular form of nonviolent resistance or civil resistance.Those practising in SATYAGRAHA is called SATYAGRAHI.The term SATYAGRAHA was coined by MAHATMA GANDHI as early as 1919. He founded SABARMATI ASHRAM to teach SATYAGRAHA.To him a SATYAGRAHI must follow following principles : 1. Ahimsa (nonviolence) ; 2. Satya (truth) ; 3. Non-stealing ; 4. Non-possession ; 5. Body-labour ; 6. Control of desire ; 7. Fearlessness ; 8. Equal respect for all religions ; 9. Swadeshi (boycott of foreign goods and used of native goods). At other occasion, MAHATMA GANDHI talked of some others principles like : 1. Must have a living faith in God ; 2. Must be leading a chaste life ; 3. Must be a habitual KHADI weaver and spinner ; and 4. Must abstain from alcohol and other intoxicants. Moreover, MAHATMA GANDHI proposed a series of rules for SATYAGRAHIS : 1. Harbour no anger ; 2. Suffer the anger of opponent ; 3. Never retaliate to assault or punishment; 4. Voluntary submit to arrest or confiscation of your own property ; 5. If you are a trustee of property, defend that property non-violently ; 6. Don’t curse or swear ; 7. Don’t insult the opponent ; 8. Neither salute or insult the flag of your opponent ; 9. If anyone attempts to insult or assault your opponent, defend your opponent non-violently ; 10. As a prisoner behave courteously and obey prison regulations ; 11. As a prisoner, do not ask for special treatment ; 12. As a prisoner, do not fast in an attempt to get conveniences ; and 13. Joyfully obey the orders of the leaders of civil & the disobedience action.
