Keep the Fire Burning

Eunice, Lois, and Stories of Faith Formation

Women of the Early Church 3
2 Timothy 1:3–7; 3:14–17

In 2 Timothy, Paul writes to a younger ministry companion whom he loves as family. Paul is imprisoned, Timothy is facing opposition, and the future of the Christian community feels uncertain. In that setting, Paul reminds Timothy where his faith began and how it must continue.

A Faith Passed Down

Paul remembers Timothy constantly in prayer. He recalls the “sincere faith” that first lived in Timothy’s grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice and now lives in Timothy.

Faith here is not presented simply as a set of beliefs. It is something that lives in people and is passed on through relationships.

Timothy probably grew up hearing stories about God. Maybe Lois told him stories from Scripture. Maybe Eunice prayed with him. Maybe he watched them help people, forgive others, and trust God when life was hard.

Who has helped you learn about God?

Maybe it was a parent, grandparent, Sunday school teacher, pastor, or friend.

Paul does not say that Timothy merely inherited the faith of his mother and grandmother. The same sincere faith now lives in Timothy. Faith may be received from others, but each generation must embrace and live it for itself.

La fe puede recibirse de otros, pero cada generación debe hacerla suya.

Paul therefore urges Timothy to “rekindle the gift of God.”

Think of a campfire beginning to go out. Sometimes you stir the coals or add another piece of wood. Faith can be like that too.

God has not given Timothy a spirit of cowardice, but a spirit of power, love, and self-discipline.

Continuing in What Has Been Learned

Later, Paul tells Timothy to continue in what he has learned because he knows the people from whom he learned it.

From childhood, Timothy has known the sacred writings. This reminds us that children and young people matter in the church now—not only someday in the future.

This is a message for the young people – You are part of the church right now.
Tú eres parte de la iglesia ahora mismo.

Lois, Eunice, Paul, and Timothy show us that faith formation is communal and intergenerational:

• Lois represents the wisdom and memory of an older generation.
• Eunice represents the daily work of nurturing faith.
• Paul represents mentorship and encouragement.
• Timothy represents the next generation carrying faith forward.

The passage invites us to remember the people through whom faith came to us.

But it also asks another question:

Who could you help grow in faith?
¿A quién podrías ayudar a crecer en la fe?

Faith is passed along through stories, prayer, kindness, forgiveness, encouragement, and faithful lives.

One person to another.
One story to another.
One generation to another.

The invitation is not simply to preserve the faith of the past. It is to rekindle it.

Keep the fire burning.
