Our review, now out in Monolith Alpha, screened 1,029 records across PubMed, IEEE and ACM (2013-2024) and included 39 studies, mapped against the WHO Classification of Digital Health Interventions and graded with the Oxford Levels of Evidence.

    What stood out:

🔹 Apps, web platforms, multimedia tools and telehealth often improved health knowledge and eHealth literacy, but results varied by age and socioeconomic status.
🔹 Evidence quality is limited: 64.1% of studies sit at Oxford Level 4, 20.5% at Level 1, and only 10.3% at Level 2 (RCTs).
🔹 53.8% of studies came from North America, with none from Africa or South America. Ethnic minorities and underserved groups featured in only 17.9%.
🔹 No interventions targeted health system managers (WHO Domain 3).
🔹 Literacy gains often faded without continued reinforcement, and few studies linked them to behavioral outcomes.
🔹 User-centered design and cultural tailoring look promising, but the evidence can’t yet show that specific features, like gamification, are superior.

TITLE: Women More Often Told Autoimmune Conditions Are "Psychological"

    URL: socialpsychology.org/client/re

    Source: The Guardian

Women with autoimmune conditions are up to 74% more likely than men to be told their symptoms are psychological, and they face much longer waits for a diagnosis and treatment, a new study suggests. About one in 10 people globally are affected by autoimmune conditions, which can cause a range of health issues such as fatigue, muscle pain, and rashes. But the study found a stark gender divide when it comes to how signs of the conditions are...

  5. The Lethal Connection - Investigating the Relationship of Drought Conditions on Firearm and Non-Firearm Suicides Among U.S. Adults
    --
    doi.org/10.1029/2025GH001571 <-- shared paper
    --
[not my usual fare, but fascinating - and not in a good way :/ … not trying to be trite, but hydrology / water resources are crucial across so many areas]
    H/T @GeoHealth Journal
“🌵🧠 Drought can disrupt livelihoods, strain communities, increase financial stress, and deepen uncertainty. All of these are factors that may contribute to psychological distress.
📊 Yet in the U.S., the relationship between drought and suicide mortality has remained understudied. This nationwide study examined drought and suicide deaths across the contiguous U.S. from 2000–2018.
🌾 The study measured drought severity using the Evaporative Demand Drought Index and used suicide mortality data from the National Center for Health Statistics.
📈 Both firearm and non-firearm suicide mortality were positively associated with drought, especially under severe conditions.
⚠️ Severe drought was associated with higher suicide mortality across several subgroups, including older adults, women, and people living in non-metro areas, though subgroup findings were not statistically compared.
🛡️ Climate-related hazards can affect health through social, economic, and psychological pathways, not only through physical exposure. Drought preparedness should include mental health supports, rural outreach, financial stress interventions, and suicide prevention resources tailored to communities facing prolonged environmental stress…”

  8. While global PrEP users have reached ~3.5 million, we are drastically short of the UNAIDS target of 21.2 million for 2025. The most marginalized communities are still left behind.

We can't end the epidemic with science alone; advocacy must go hand-in-hand.

  9. 🌈 The Power of Belonging. 100% Community

📣 Senior group fitness is as much about mental well-being and social connection as it is about physical exercise. The power of feeling like you belong can't be overstated, even if it's rarely talked about enough.

💪🏾 My SPARTA classes are part of a broader array of programs at the Malden Senior Center working to meet people right where they are. We welcome seniors of all abilities, backgrounds, and fitness levels, and I’m proud to help foster a diverse, inclusive community where every participant feels valued and supported.

📸 Take a look at these photos from class to see the smiles, friendships, and energy that make our SPARTA group so special.

  16. 📣 Update on American Sign Language

➡️ Thank you to everyone who shared recommendations and insights on learning American Sign Language (ASL)! Your guidance—especially around prioritizing Deaf-led instruction—was invaluable.

    🧏🏽 I’ve officially registered for a 6-week ASL 1 course through a Deaf-led program!

⭐️ Learning ASL is a lifelong journey, and I’m excited to take this first step as part of my commitment to health equity and expanding accessibility within my adaptive fitness and community programs for Deaf, hard of hearing, and non-verbal members.

    🤘🏾Appreciate you all!

  17. 📣 Attention ASL (American Sign Language) signers and community members:

I’m planning to start learning American Sign Language (ASL) for both personal growth and as part of my advocacy for health equity. My goal is to break down communication barriers and make community fitness sessions, group classes, and 1-on-1 coaching more inclusive and accessible for Deaf, hard of hearing, and non-verbal members.

I’d welcome recommendations: Have you taken live virtual or in-person ASL 1 classes around Greater Boston or online? Are there specific Deaf-led programs or local non-profit courses you’d suggest?

Post in the comment and thank you!

  20. Turning the tide against malaria: 16 new tools are emerging.

From next-generation vaccines and monoclonal antibodies to dual-active nets and AI-driven tools, the pipeline is full of promise. Yet technology alone won't stop the disease.

🎥 During Covid I was running 15‑minute live workouts to help the community stay active with minimal equipment… and yes, kitten cameos were part of the program.

👟 This series covered everything: bodyweight, mini bands, core, flexibility, strength — all part of my mission to make movement accessible for everyone and advance health equity through free, online fitness.

🗣️After volunteering at the New England Center & Home for Veterans in Boston, I got back to Malden and took a moment to stretch. Someone walking by noticed I was trying to film and offered to help. I used a big granite stone — but a chair or bench works the same.

  28. For the first time, the European Commission has recognised women's health as a distinct policy priority, in the EU Gender Equality Strategy 2026–2030.

It is a step forward, but the next logical move is a dedicated EU strategy for women's health. EIWH's proposal sets out what that could look like.

  29. 📚Did you know? Your upper body affects your lower back — and it’s a two‑way street.

😣 Stiff from sitting or driving? Most people stretch only their hips. But your lats connect directly into your lower back through the thoracolumbar fascia. When one end is tight, the other end feels it.

🎥 In this quick demo at the Malden Fitness Court, I show a gentle single‑arm hang (feet on the floor) that helps create space in the spine, unloads that connective tissue, and complements your hip stretches.

✅ Simple, safe, and surprisingly effective. Give it a try.

⚽️ Today’s SPARTA Class for all abilities at the Malden Senior Center closed out with an agility ladder + ball toss circuit. Footwork, eye–hand coordination, focus — and a whole lot of laughter.

  31. 📣 Train the Body. Train the Brain.🧠

A quick highlight from today’s SPARTA class at Heritage House, Malden, MA 🤝🏽 In partnership with Mystic Valley Aging Services

💥 While our full routine also includes resistance bands and battle ropes, this video spotlights a few key drills that build dynamic balance and movement confidence: 👟

    • Backward Walking — Retraining gait mechanics and improving spatial awareness.
    • Slam‑to‑Agility Combo — Moving from explosive power into precise footwork.
    • Cone Pivots — Practicing turns and directional changes for real‑world balance.
