  1. Ugh! This was #Maine last year (we're only in "Abnormally Dry" and "Moderate Drought" and not "Severe Drought" this year).

UK - Vegetables to get smaller and more expensive due to hot weather, farmers warn

by Alex Daniel and Esme Stallard, 5 August, 2026

"This year's harvest could be the worst on record as farmers warn the exceptionally dry spring and summer could lead to 'shrinkflation' in UK supermarkets.
England and Wales saw their driest July since records began 190 years ago, according to the Met Office, and a drought has been declared across large parts of the country.

"The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) thinktank said the UK's cereals and oilseed harvest could be 2.5 million tonnes less than earlier forecasts.

"Tim O'Malley, the chairman of Nationwide produce, said it was "as bad as its ever been" and that shoppers will likely see higher prices or smaller vegetables in supermarkets.

"The harvest of barley, oats and rapeseed, which are used in beer, breakfast cereals and vegetable oil, is estimated to drop to just 19.5 million tonnes, the worst since records began in 1984.

"That is compared with a previous low of 19.8 million tonnes in 2020, and would cost farmers £390m in lost revenue, the ECIU estimated.

"The crops are also used for feeding livestock, making them crucial across most of the food chain.

"O'Malley said consumers could feel the impact in the vegetable aisle too, where grocers are likely to swap in smaller produce at the same price, which is known as shrinkflation."

  2. As I had an office day today and the weather is sunny I decided to walk to work this morning, for the first time in ages.

Along the path someone had set a fire to burn their rubbish (madness in this dry weather) which was still smouldering.

Still the local rats were very appreciative of have a cooked breakfast for a change!

  3. Food producers battle as parts of South Australia record driest year: Some regions in South Australia have had the lowest rainfall since records began, according to a preliminary Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) report. abc.net.au/news/2025-01-03/sa- #PortElliot #Beekeeper #Dryweather

  4. Today I’ll fill all pots for bedding flowers & drill holes in these boxes + fill them with soil for planting seeds. I’ve arranged my small station for cultivation (the magnolia above now has huge buds)
Hopefully I get the kale planted before too hot
    More ☕️…

  5. I start with the sad red bush at the back of the garden & find that all pieces to connect my water hoses are somehow missing & I can only use one at the time=shorter length

After trying alternatives I give up- I’ll go hunt in the basement, but first more ☕️…
