  8. It’s always informative for me to think about System 1 and System 2 thinking (from Daniel Kahneman’s “Thinking Fast and Slow”). System 1 thinking is fast, habitual, reflexive, automatic; while System 2 thinking is slow, deliberate, logical.

Something I recently noticed is that #stress and #trauma cause me to get stuck in System 1 mode for extended periods. When I’m in “emergency response mode”, I have to be constantly vigilant and alert, and that means never allowing my attention to be drawn away by any sort of deep thought.

One way I alleviate this, weirdly enough, is to *force* myself to do some System 2 thinking: e.g. solving some puzzles, reading a book, or watching a movie. Just as “putting a smile on your face makes you happier”, doing System 2 activities makes me less panicky and stressed.

Getting into System 2 mode when stressed is *physically* painful for me. My brain is screaming for me to stay alert, but pushing through that pain can help to shift my mental gear out of stress response.

  11. Selfcare tip for students:

If you stress yourself while testing your acquired knowledge on a subject, you might train recalling information under stress.

But if you stay calm while testing yourself, you train staying calm in test situations.

Everything the achievement orientated society tells you is a lie.
