En last, but not least.

Brief visit to #Leiden, my old uni town. It was just dry enough to walk a loop through the Hortus, the university garden with both a Chinese and Japanese section

And the last I show is a quiet atmospheric print of a bath house. Kinda fitting to my plans for a spa day with friends tomorrow.
The other wall in the exhibition was about Hisui's role during WW II and Japanese invasion of Korea and Japan - a hard reminder. Did not make photos of that art on purpose, even though some of it was impressive. Made me think a lot about Kazuo Ishiguros "An Artist of the Floating World" (very much a recommendation!).

Then some experiments with color - it's the same printing blocks so the crucial step is the interaction between the artist and the printer, either just changing colors or removing some of the blocks to change the atmosphere (esp. the misty view in the four boat images).
I've first seen this in the previous exhibition and I fell in love. Really would love to have something like this on a wall in the house, even in reproduction ...

Been to the Kawase Hasui exhibition in the Sieboldhuis here in Leiden today. Lovely though imho not quiet that interesting as the overview Shin Hanga exhibition they had a while ago. Still worth it if you are eithe in Leiden and have some time to spare or, like me, love Japanese art and wood prints in particular.
First a really impressive take on a snowstorm - some impressive work from the wood cutter here, turning the artist's vision into a print.

Great exhibition in the Museum De Lakenhal on the art of the mysterios Master I.S. - I do love old Dutch art (a love that long before I moved to the Netherlands for the first yime) & this is an exceptional painter with a side of mystery regarding their use of non-conventional clothing & facial features. Recommended!
If you want to know more, here an interesting article about I.S. and some of the research that lead to the exhibition:

🇳🇱 The City Hall (Stadhuis) in Leiden, the Netherlands - a vintage photochrom print from the 1890s. Digitally enhanced.
The city hall was significantly damaged by a fire in 1929, but its beautiful Renaissance facade is still largely intact.

On this day, 3 years ago, I had dinner and SDG discussion in the beautiful Lakenhal; the Leiden city museum of fine art & history. My mother, an art historian, worked here for 35 years. Rembrandt (see statute) was born in Leiden, many of his paintings can be seen here.
