I keep reminding myself that cute building sketches should not be confined to holidays - especially if you live in a place as picturesque as #Leiden (but I also firmly believe that you can find interesting views pretty much everywhere).
Here is a first attempt.

If you've ever taken a stroll through Leiden, an adorable and ancient city in the Netherlands about 30 minutes by train south of Schiphol Airport; you may have seen poems and quotations like this one painted on the houses in the alleys and side streets.
We'll have to take a bit of a detour to get to the origins of this initiative.
Remember the Dutch art movement called "de Stijl" of Piet Mondrian fame? It was founded in 1917 by a number of artists and architects on the principle of "neo-plasticism"; best explained by Mondrian as "this new plastic idea will ignore the particulars of appearance, that is to say, natural form and colour. On the contrary, it should find its expression in the abstraction of form and colour, that is to say, in the straight line and the clearly defined primary colour". De Stijl was also the name of a journal – published by the Dutch painter, designer, writer, poet and critic Theo van Doesburg – that propagated the group's theories.
Now we return to our main course.
1992 was the 75 year anniversary of the magazine "De Stijl", and to honour that, artist Ben Walenkamp suggested to showcase some of van Doesburg's poems publicly on local walls. This initiative expanded through collaboration with his friend and painter Jan-Willem Bruins as project "Dicht bij de Muur" and the foundation of the organization "Tegen-Beeld", and now at least 110 murals in some 30 languages.
P.S. The Dutch are very very fond of word play, and "Tegen-Beeld" literally means "Counter-Image" and would be best translated as "counter-argument". "Dicht bij de Muur" would literally mean "close to the wall" but 'dicht' is also short for 'gedicht' meaning poem. Oh, those Dutch.

here is a photo I took in November 2021 at pretty much exactly the same spot but looking the other way.
I had only been in the country for several weeks at this point. I remember that I took this picture after taking the trash out and wandering just a little farther down the street to get my bearings in my new home.

Here is today's Medieval Cozycore. The pink house is an authentic, original medieval whorehouse. The people who live there now are probably not sex workers. Though they could be, I haven't checked.
There's actually a lot of shots I'd like to take and post but I don't, because people actually do live in all these old houses. Having once lived in Leiden myself, I'm acutely aware of how weird it is when tourists treat your house like a theme park installation, and this city is all massive cathedral windows right up against the edge of the sidewalk. So I try to avoid shots that include clear views into personal space.
(I've never seen the curtains open on the pink house, presumably because it is such a tourist attraction.)

More medieval cozycore for those of you burdened with modern reality. Okay actually this is more 1600s cozycore but you understand
I used to live down at the entrance to this canal. I had to seriously consider whether marrying my husband and moving to a bigger house was worth giving up living in a fairy tale. I took the deal and come back wistfully a few times a year (and then I also got Odin out of the deal, he couldn’t thrive in historical Leiden)
