  33. La menace d’Alain Corneau

    Un homme pour deux femmes, le viril Henri Savin (Yves Montand) au volant de ses camions pris entre Dominique Montlaur (Marie Dubois), la mademoiselle héritière de la boite de papa et d’un château du Médoc, follement accrochée à son substitut de père, et la jeune employée de Novotel Julie Manet (Carole Laure), passionnelle et enceinte. Mais le duel se transpose des deux amantes à un duel entre l’homme et la police.

    Car il y a mort. Mademoiselle s’est tuée volontairement après avoir tenté d’acheter la jeune amante, puis de l’agresser. Elle a sauté du haut de la citadelle de Blaye dans la Garonne et s’est écrabouillée sur les rochers. Aucun témoin, seuls les indices comptent pour les flics. L’inspecteur Waldeck en 504 (Jean-François Balmer), imper noir et pieds plats, est un enquêteur tenace, malin et sans pitié. Ce qui compte est son boulot, il le fera jusqu’au bout. Selon les seuls indices, et les interrogatoires, il fait inculper Julie, puisqu’il est avéré qu’elle était sur les lieux, ce qu’elle a nié. Or, un mensonge est le premier pas du soupçon qui incite à creuser. Sa Mini Morris rouge vif (pas très discrète) a éraflé un arbre non loin de la citadelle, puis a été repérée fonçant sur la route par un cafetier.

    Les circonstances ont conduit au drame. Dominique est jalouse ; elle a déjà tenté de se tuer au volant de sa Mercedes mais a canné devant une croix sur le chemin ; elle a suivi plusieurs fois Julie. Cette dernière a donné rendez-vous à son amant Henri, dont elle attend un bébé depuis deux mois, à la citadelle à 20h30. Mais un camionneur de la boite que dirige Savin, dont Dominique est propriétaire, s’est embourbé dans les vignes, évidemment ivre. Henri doit aller le dépanner, ce qui le met en retard. Il ramène et couche le gros con dans une benne de camion au dépôt, sous la pendule d’entreprise qui marque 21h15, puis file rejoindre Julie. Mais celle-ci, qui a trop attendu, se voit attaquer par Dominique et finit par s’enfuir, robe arrachée jusqu’aux seins, griffures d’ongles manucurés au cou. Elle panique, fait n’importe quoi, et se retrouve hagarde dans les bras protecteurs d’Henri, son mâle, son sauveur, tandis que Dominique, désespérée, s’élimine de la scène.

    Julie est confondue, inculpée, jugée, emprisonnée. Henri imagine alors un stratagème pour la sauver, puisqu’elle n’est pas coupable. Déjà, il est sans le vouloir héritier de tous les biens de Dominique, ce qui lui donne un mobile aux yeux de l’inspecteur, fonctionnaire soupçonneux (ils le sont tous, quel que soit leur poste). Mais Henri va plus loin. Innocent qui se montre coupable, il retourne à la citadelle pour semer des indices qui le mettent en cause, bouton de manchette, traces digitales, et compose un brouillon à la machine de Dominique qui donne rendez-vous à l’heure et à l’endroit du pseudo meurtre, que l’inspecteur ne peut que découvrir.

    Julie finit par être libérée, et Henri l’objet d’un mandat d’arrêt. Or il vient de s’envoler pour Montréal et échappe à la police. Il va dès lors organiser sa fausse mort au volant d’un camion, orientant les indices vers un gang de racketteurs routiers de Colombie britannique. Mais c’est sans compter avec la CB et la solidarité des routiers entre eux. Ils vont le traquer et lui faire la peau, sans la police. Un Duel pour la justice avec des monstres d’acier. Tel est pris qui croyait prendre. Quant à Julie, elle s’envole avec son bébé (en Concorde) pour Melbourne, en Australie, où son amant Henri lui a donné rendez-vous pour la belle vie – qui n’aura pas lieu.

    Une plongée dans ces années 1970 en France où les barrières de classes étaient encore fortes, et où la transgression était dure, voire punie. Le rang des voitures indiquait le statut social sur la route, la Mercedes sombre de bourgeois, la Volvo solide jaune du petit-bourgeois, la Mini rouge vif de la jeunesse cosmopolite. Les camions sont des symboles virils qui fascinent les femelles, et le mâle en rajoute avec les gros Mack trucks yankees. Il est avec eux comme un gamin devant un train électrique ; ce qui compte est moins l’amour, moins l’argent, que de faire joujou avec les engins, comme dans le Salaire de la peur.

    Noirceur et dureté psychologique, le réalisateur pourfend avec jubilation l’idéalisme du happy end et du tout le monde est beau et gentil. On ne refait pas sa vie, on en subit les conséquences. Henri voulait s’émanciper de la tutelle de Dominique, véritable goule qui le considérait comme un bien de son patrimoine, sans en prendre les moyens ni les formes. Il a entraîné Julie dans sa chute en croyant tout sauver.
