  1. What's on my mind? Well, that #Maine is still very much in drought (despite the snow). And with dry and unseasonably hot weather (close to 60 F is forecast) on the horizon for next week, it does NOT bode well...

Some farmers say they are down at least 30% and are either making adjustments, or looking ahead to next season

TURNER, Maine — "Whether it's beef, apples, or corn, farmers in Maine are having to cut corners or make other plans because we haven't seen enough rain this year.

" 'You need at least one inch of rain to grow a good crop,' Russ Black of Black Acre Farm said.

"He typically saves his second crop of hay to feed his cows over the winter, but he's already using it because the grass hasn't grown fast enough for hay. [Smiling Hill Farm is having the same problem.]

" 'We haven't seen it this dry, so it's definitely a year to stand out,' Jared Hood of Hood Farm said.

"Hood grows corn and sells it to dairy farmers to feed their cows. He says the corn stalks are typically 10-12 feet tall, but right now some are less than 5 feet.

" 'We have some irrigation up here, but we can't irrigate it all. We're on top of a hill,' Jeff Timberlake of Ricker Hill Orchard said.

"Timberlake added that despite the lack of rain, there will still be plenty of apples at the orchard's U-Pick.

"He's hoping for rain not just for the rest of apple season but for next year's apples because the flowers for that are growing now.

"Ricker Hill Farm and Hood Farm are down at least 30-60%

" 'This apple right now is about an inch and a quarter. It's dehydrated. It's shriveled up,' Timberlake said, showing off his apples.

"Black told Maine's Total Coverage he hasn't seen it this dry since the early 2000s; at that time, he had to make adjustments.

" 'I sold some cows. I had to buy a lot of feed. You know, I might have to buy feed this year if I can find it,' he said.

"Black said he hopes we get more rain in the next four weeks, while Timberlake and Hood are looking ahead to next year."

  3. A climate-related mass #dieoff leaves over 100 tons of dead #fish collecting at a Greek port

By VAGGELIS KOUSIORAS and DEREK GATOPOULOS
    Updated 1:37 AM EDT, August 30, 2024

VOLOS, #Greece (AP) — "More than 100 tons of dead fish were collected in and around the port of #Volos in central Greece after a mass die-off linked to extreme weather fluctuations, authorities said Thursday.

"The dead #FreshwaterFish filled the bay 320 kilometers (200 miles) north of #Athens, and nearby rivers. Water levels were swollen by #floods in 2023, followed by months of #SevereDrought.

"The die-off has hit local businesses along the seafront, reducing commercial activity by 80% in the past three days, according to Volos’ Chamber of Commerce.

"Fishing trawlers have been chartered by the regional authorities, along with earthmovers, to scoop the dead fish out of the sea and load them onto trucks bound for an incinerator.

"The fish came from #LakeKarla in central Greece, a body of water drained in the early 1960s and restored in 2018 to combat the effects of drought.

“'There are millions of dead fish all the way from Lake Karla and 20 kilometers (12 miles) eastward,' Anna Maria Papadimitriou, the deputy regional governor of the central #Thessaly area, told state-run television.

"'Right now, there is a huge effort underway to clean up the millions of dead fish that have washed along the shorelines and riverbanks … an effort that involves multiple contractors,' she said.

"Water levels rose abruptly in fall 2023 during a #DeadlyStorm that caused extensive flooding in central Greece, but have since receded due to low rainfall and successive summer #heatwaves ."

  4. #LocalActivism does work! A couple of years ago, #PolandSpring tried to double their extraction in my town during a time of #SevereDrought in #Maine. Myself and my neighbors fought back -- with maps of the aquifers showing how everything was connected -- and how #BigWater tried to alter the maps to reflect their interests! Always keep in mind -- the more a corporation *sponsors* local causes, the more they have to be accountable for. It's usually #GuiltMoney designed to skew the public in their favor!

Poland Spring withdraws request to extract more water in Hollis after residents object

The request came as Hollis and the rest of Maine suffered a drought. Townspeople expressed their outrage at public meetings.
