U.S. Drought Monitor August 6, 2026
For the 50 states and Puerto Rico, the U.S. Drought Monitor shows 40.72% in moderate drought or worse, compared to 40.07% last week.

Drought expanded widely across the north central US and eased in the Mid-Atlantic and in parts of the West. Drought (D1-D4) covers 47.89% of the contiguous US, a jump of 2.12 points after two months of shrinking drought coverage.

Parts of the Midwest and High Plains saw mostly degradations this week. The Southeast and surrounding areas saw mostly improvements, with two-category improvements in North Carolina. The Northeast, South and West saw a mix of improvements and degradations. Puerto Rico saw conditions worsen.

For the 50 states and Puerto Rico, the U.S. Drought Monitor shows 40.07% in moderate drought or worse, compared to 38.3% last week.

Drought intensified in the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, while it eased in parts of Montana, Idaho, Texas and the Southeast. Drought covers 45.77% of the contiguous US, a decrease of 0.7 points. This is the ninth straight week of drought improvement.

For the 50 states and Puerto Rico, the U.S. Drought Monitor shows 38.3% in moderate drought or worse, compared to 38.88%% last week.

Drought eased in the south and east of the US, while intensifying in the north and west on the U.S. Drought Monitor. Drought covered 46.47% of the US, a decrease of 0.73 points. The drought footprint has shrunk for the 8th straight week.
