Much of the Pacific Northwest watershed continues to see low snow water equivalent levels, especially Oregon and Washington. Drought conditions are impacting water levels and recreation.
On April 8, the Washington Department of Ecology declared a statewide drought. This is the fourth year in a row that part or all of Washington will be under a drought declaration.

For the 50 states and Puerto Rico, the U.S. Drought Monitor shows 51.35% in moderate drought or worse, compared to 50.9% last week.

Northern Florida and southern Georgia have experienced an unusually severe wildfire season this spring. Burning restrictions were in place for recreational areas in the South, as well as parts of the West, in April.

“Top soil moving off of long term no-till fields. These had been planted about 5 days ago with minimal soil disturbance. The movement of dust in corrals and barn yards due to the wind will potentially cause some dust pneumonia issues in young livestock, as well.”

Rain continued to bypass the central and southern High Plains, leaving rangeland, pastures, and winter wheat in desperate need of moisture.
Farther east, however, showers and thunderstorms continued to ease drought and dryness across the eastern Plains.

“Extreme drought conditions. In the past 6 months we have received only .56 of moisture. Spring pastures have not greened up at all. Wheat plants are dying and not showing new growth. Above normal temperatures dominated this winter and spring, along with windy conditions.”

“Southeastern Utah is experiencing the driest spring conditions I have seen in this area. The snowpack this year was dismal, barely reaching more than 50% SWE for the basins.
