  3. First Day of Winter

Well… it’s winter again. Again. Literally winter, as opposed to the last three plus months which was figuratively winter. Literal winter runs from December to March. Here in New England, figurative winter runs from September 1st through sometime in late June. The upside of the first day of winter is that from now on the days start getting longer. The downside is that it’s going to get colder and more awful with each passing day, and it’s going to take so long for the days to get longer enough that it matters that it won’t make any real difference for months.

    I hate winter.

December 21st puts us in the home stretch for xmas. I am still waiting for the amazonians to deliver a couple of things so the wrapping is still not complete. I have to go out and pick up a few things today as well. That includes some food supplies for xmas eve, xmas dinner, and our slightly delayed annual xmas eve party which happens on the Sunday after xmas this year. I also need to bring my work-holiday gift to my sister’s today so we can have it with xmas dinner.

I need to play guitar but there probably won’t be time for it. I need to go out and take pictures of stuff but the weather likely won’t let me. Ugh.

Lots to do, but I can’t do anything until I clean the tiny amount of snow we got yesterday off of the cars and the driveway. Ugh.

I hate winter. Remember that time a few years ago when we went to Florida in January and the weather was warm? Can we maybe do that again?

  4. Ongoing #NH #drought conditions raise #groundwater concerns

    Story by Kelly O'Brien
    November 7, 2024

"With southern #NewHampshire now in moderate to #SevereDrought conditions, officials are growing concerned about groundwater levels in some areas.

"The latest report from the U.S. Drought Monitor shows that southern New Hampshire is in the midst of a moderate drought, while severe drought conditions are being experienced at the coast.

"The state Department of Environmental Services said New Hampshire has been in an extreme precipitation deficit over the past 90 days. Precipitation is down 4 to 6 inches, which is between 30% to 50% of what's expected for this time of year.

"The soil is dry, as are rivers, which has led to a severe drought classification in a small part of the state. There are concerns about groundwater and what going into the spring with a deficit will mean."

  9. #Drought deepens in #Massachusetts as #wildfires continue burning

October fires scorch over 600 acres amid #NewEngland drought

    By Chris Gloninger
    Updated October 30, 2024

"Despite overnight light rain, moderate drought conditions continue to expand across Massachusetts and other parts of New England, further elevating the risk for more wildfires to spark and existing ones to spread rapidly. Over 600 acres have so far burned from wildfires and smaller brush fires in October as the unrelenting parched ground and dry dead leaves continue to fuel these blazes.

"In the last 24 hours, the gauge at Logan International Airport received barely a quarter inch of rain, meaning Boston has now recorded only 2.30 inches of rain since Sept. 1, making it the second driest fall to date for the area. Currently, more than a third of Massachusetts is experiencing moderate drought conditions.

"This influx of warm air we’re experiencing today through Friday, with temperatures in the 70s and low-80s, will only exacerbate the dry conditions, according to meteorologists. With sunny, breezy conditions and humidity relatively low, any moisture we did pick up with evaporate quickly."

  10. Why does every day in NE feel like it's soup now? Like, can we have one day where it's not baking hot with 100% humidity? 🥹🥲🫠 #newengland #newenglandweather #toohot

  11. My driveway continues to be the most treacherous part of my run, and I don't have time (strike that) motivation to solve the problem.

when in april it'll solve itself.

  12. ⚡️ Update: Tornado in Mattapoisett, MA caused damage to homes, vehicles, and water treatment plant. Heavy rain in New England led to floods, road closures, disrupted transportation, and additional flooding in Middlebury and Rutland, VT. 35 people evacuated, 1 injury reported. #NewEnglandWeather riskmap.com/incidents/1875906/

  13. @ajpbradley Yup…

Snow or frost in Boston are NOT a problem. The roads are well cleared, and if the sun peeps out, it’s absolutely gorgeous sometimes!

But rain 🌧️? Yuck! Nah! Stay home and keep dry! 😂
